Martial Arts on Pop Culture
SaiFightsMS replied to Maciej's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
First welcome to the forum MacieJ. I see Jack now has a foil to bounce ideas off of . I think what you are experiencing is a result of some of the more traditional values martial arts try to teach. Some schools more effectively than others. It is an interesting comment you have made. Come in often and share more of your thoughts. Sai -
Actually it is less important wether or not you loose your lunch after a confrontation than how you handle yourself during the problem. Your conduct in resolving the incident and how quickly it ends is much more important. Some people have an inner frame of mind that allows for violence against others more readily than others. At this point in time do you think you handled the incident the best way that you could have? And do you think the result will affect any future incidents? I thought the replies would be extremely varied. We all have different values. You have had a tremendous learning experience. Now what you do with it is up to you. And going out looking for a fight really soon is probably not a good idea at this point.

Internal conflict is more what it sounds like to me. You train to fight for self defense. You spar in class. You know you can hurt someone. Along comes a jerk. You do your stuff. Your mind wants to just react but has a conflict. You don't want to seriously hurt the guy. And, Oh yes, a serious internal conflict can cause physical symptoms of just the type described.

This area was set up for pictures. When you come in this thread you know you may have to wait a minute for a picture to download rather than getting slowed down elsewhere in the forum.

Sure Patrick we love pics._________________ KarateForums Sempai Shotokan Karate, Bojitsu, Saijitsu [ This Message was edited by: SaiFightsMS on 2002-02-24 02:09 ]

Hello and welcome to the forum to both of you. Pictures and other such things in your signature can slow down the transmissions to slower computers and clog the system. Giving up just a touch of individual expression is not really a bad thing when you consider the other side. More people can see your ideas and input faster.

Some good points everyone. Also the principle of reciprocal action. When one side is pushed forward pulling the other side back speeds up the movement and the power.

Yes I have been enjoying your posts and your insights. Just keep it up.

Hey I think we are going to be good friends in here. Back at ya'.

Lady gets on a plane carrying a birdcage. She sits down in the seat assigned to her on the aisle. So what does she ask her seatmate who has the window seat? Would you mind changind seats with me so my bird can look out of the window. (True story happened to one of my neighbors many years ago.)

Well, whatever, hello anyway.

Got a list of international marketing goofs. Some are funny. The Pinto in Brazil When Ford introduced the Pinto in Brazil it sold very poorly. Then they found the reason. The word pinto in Brazilliam slang meant "tiny male genitals". Ford pried off all the nametags and renamed the Brazillian version Corcel, meaning Horse.

Elliot I know how you feel. There were times in class I just could not rember any of the movements. Some days were fine and some well - downright frustrating. When we were learning Sakagawa no kon in class I kept getting lost and slowed the whole class down I don't know how many times. It was embarrassing. I finally got it though and so will you.

Thanks for the advance warning.

Does anyone have any knowledge about the benefits of wooden weapons made out of white wax wood? I was considering getting a white waxwood bo and was wondering if anyone had ever worked with a wooden weapon out of this material.

Many quality nunchaku have a taper to them. Mine do too. With the kikon-bu (lower area of handle) being larger, and thus heavier, it makes the swing more powerfull.

should young kids do a martial art?
SaiFightsMS replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Does this thread resemble a question someone just asked? -
I have always done more kata work outside of class than in class. Sometimes I work them at a slow pace concentrating on my stances and the precision of my arm/hand movements. Sometimes I work them hard with the most power I can. I don't last very long when I do that. Sometimes I take them apart and work on sections at a time.

Jack I know you were being very serious. And you do a lot of thinking. I just worry about you my friend. Just don't let things get you too down okay?

How about the way sooner or later almost everyone slides off the decline bench head first? That always gets a few chuckles.

There is a lot of information coming out now on the collapseable short staff or tanbo. And there are a lot of different versions of the tanbo or collapseable staff coming out. It seems the tanbo is currently the "hottest new weapon" on the market.

LOL Doug, the story is that Okinawan policeman carried sai. And that throwing them was a way to stop a suspect. Most throws were aimed at the lower part of the leg and the foot. Not to pin the foot but to capture the ankle between the times. Or to pin a pant leg to the ground.
