  1. I find the Japanese terms escape the memory very quickly if not used on a regular basis. Like when I am working on a kata I don't think turn migi zenkutsu dachi ken migi age uke. I think turn in zenkutsu dachi and head block. My aging memory just isn't retaining the terms very well.
  2. There have been many discussions, some heated, over the tradiontion and values of the martial arts. Kata and its importance can generate a lot of differing opinions. There are so many schools, and so many different styles of schools. So many ways the thing style is handled it can be mind boggling. Personally Beaker I agree with you in the importance of traditon including kata. A balanced apporoach to training. My school also has a written test for shodan.
  3. We do have a place to post pictures. In the inroductions area there is a thread called "Post your pictures". So come take a look. You can also start a thread and introduce yourself there.
  4. The royal throne is a good place to practice the arm movements for the tekki katas. Maybe the other 11% still use corn cobs?
  5. Maybe a burb with kimchee breath is something akin to emitting flatus with the mouth.
  6. The first time I ever really hit someone in anger was many years ago. I was like 9. See there was this kid next door who was older and about a foot taller and really pi ssing me off. I mean really pi ssing me off. I can't tell you exactly what happened. What I remember is literally seeing red. Next thing there is this kid laying on the ground. No problem then. Or after the fact. Down the road a few years in a similar situation I could react and still know what I was doing. The rage itself would pump me up, make me shake and give me incredible amounts of energy and power. After the fact I would wonder if I had done the right thing. But had no real problem after it was over. More years along I had better mental coping skills. I could react. Kick the stuffings out of someone. If the reaction fit the need of the situation I would be okay afterward. If the reaction did not fit the need of the situation I would feel sick on the inside. If the situation could have been defused had I handled it better I felt it inside. I think a lot of how we feel after an altercation depends on our inner values. When we violate them we react badly. Does that make any sense?
  7. A belly roll huh. Actually for some females it is another part of the anatomy that hits the floor first.
  8. Good question Yoda. Primarily we are talking abouj bo as an art. Working with it for the fun and pleasure it gives back. Doug it seems to me too that using the shorter jo staff would work much better too. Of the main people I am corresponding with are 2 paraplegics. One is in Kenpo and one in Isshinryu. The big issue seems to be when performing a kata and moving forward or turning one hand is tied up somewhere other than the bo. So some of the blocks and strikes would need to be modified for use with one hand. I have always practiced bo standing. This is really making me think. Actually I would love to find a way to work with disabled people who want to give martial arts a try.
  9. There is a small, but growing, number of martial arts students who are full time wheelchair users. And they are interested in kobudo training. So - for those who practice bo techniques - how would you handle your weapon from a seated position? What changes would you make to your technique?
  10. A seperate senior class? Well in some places there are enough people in older age ranges to support a class. There are some schools currently working on adjusting cirruculums to meet the needs of those who wish to continue to train as they age. I do think as the population of those currently training ages there will be more such programs. And hopefully more people beginning to train at an older age. Since this is a judo/ju jitsu grappling area, does anyone think that the grappling styles could succesfully adapt itself to accomadate an ageing population?
  11. TOILET PAPER FACTS According to a 1999 survey by the Scott Paper Company: * You can gauge a person's education by whether they read in the bathroom. * More than 2/3 of the people with a master's degree and doctorates read in the stall. * Only one in two high school grads read while in the bathroom, and 56 percent of those with college degrees do. * Fifty four percent of Americans fold their toilet tissue neatly while 35 percent wad it into a ball before using it. * Seven percent steal rolls of toilet paper (hotels/motels) * More than sixty percent prefer that their toilet paper roll over the top, twenty nine percent from the bottom. The rest don't care. So do you read in yours?
  12. You do seem to do a good job of painting mental imagery. If the "foreign" names are a problem try using names closer to those you are comfortable working with.
  13. Give a look through "why do we strive so hard to do the splits?" There may be a few good ideas and links in there.
  14. So did someone just ask a flexibility question?
  15. That was a thought provoking comment. And an interesting way to look at the dojo.
  16. It was only 21 degrees outside this morning. :bawling:What a switch from friday. I want spring back
  17. Hi welcome to the forum.
  18. There are probably cities and rivers named Miami in many places. Oh, not to mention counties. We have a Miami county too.
  19. So I am on my way to the gym friday. The weather is great. It is 71 outside. I am halfway across the bridge over the Great Miami River and hear honking. A small flock of geese fly overhead on their way to a spot where they will rest for the night on their journey back to the north. What a great day.
  20. It wouln't have been half as funny if the guilty party hadn't been the senior black belt.
  21. Hi Shin Welcome to the forum. Like it allready cool
  22. Hey a pocket in the underwear might prevent one from getting locked out of the house when retrieving the paper.
  23. An awe inspiring burb huh? :spitlaugh:We have all heard a few of those. And most of us have emitted a few - wether we want to admit it or not. We were closing class one night. Everyone is sitting quietly on the floor doing their seated meditaition. We hear this loud and obnoxious emission of flatus. So after a flurry of inappropriate giggling. At the end of class sensei just had to ask who let out the innapproapriate kiai. Innappropriate kiai :spitlaugh: have you ever heard a better term for a mistimed fart?
  24. I do see your point prodigy. And the reasons you metion are why I chose not to do ju-jutsu or any grappling form for that matter. The way I see it when you do something you go for it. And if you find that you cannot handle some of the basics that the art builds its foundation on it is time to find something else. So I may not jump. That does not mean I do not try. Or that does not mean I try to find the most acceptable substitute that still performs the purpose of the move.
  25. GRRRRRRRRRR :kaioken:
