  1. I just wanted to know how some of you trained thats all. I actually use weights quite a bit but i do lots of calistetics as well. I found that weight training is a must. BTW Charles atlas had this program called dynamic tension in which no weights were involved almost based entirely on this dipping exercise. Well Weider claimed Atlas's muscles were barbell built, and that Atlas's routine was giving people false impressions as to how there physique would look. SO they went to court and this is how the story went. Judge "so Mr. Atlas do you ever lift weights ?". "Why yes. But only to test my strength" replied Atlas. Judge "How often do you test your strength ?" , "I test my strength for about an hour a day 3 times a week." replied Atlas
  2. run in a zig zag pattern.. the further you get away from them the harder it will be for them to hit you, if you move back and forth like a zig zag it will take longer for them to aim. Run and dont look back
  3. do you mean proficient or perfection ? As there is quite a distance from proficency to perfection. I would say a person who has military basic training is proficient in unarmed combat.
  4. Just out of curiosity which of you like weight training over calisthetics(bodyweight exercises) and vice/versa.
  5. Jerrylove wrote: How so ? Which part of the guys body are you watching ? How do you manage to time his rhythm ? How do you manage not to let on that your timing his rhythm? If a guy is watching my feet he'll get a head shot. If a guy is watching my head he'll get a body shot. If i think hes catching on to my rhythm i could change my rhythm then switch leads. I could fake a body shot switch leads then go for a head shot. Any of those things can be done in a second or even a fraction of a second. My opponent has no idea im going to do any of these things by watching my rhythm. As I have many rhythms.
  6. Your hands will probably get really red, cut, scratched, bruised, blistered and nice and bloody. This will probably happen if you get in a bareknuckle fight with someone anyways. Just something to get use to.
  7. I agree with Kyle-san, there are many types of Kung-Fu styles. Kickboxing is also a pretty General. Which Style of kickboxing? American Kickboxing. Muay Thai. Savate. Le boxing de francais. Im sure there are others just cant think of them.
  8. A back fist is a good attack but it leaves your guard open.
  9. It shouldnt take a person years to learn how to defend themselves. A person can still deffend themselves against thugs with a handful of techniques. Maybe not as well as someone who has been practising martial arts for years. But knowing a few techniques is better then knowing no techniques. Some of those rapesafe programs for women teach some pretty harsh techniques.
  10. Also if a bodybuilder is in season he will be doing lots of cardio possibly 60 minutes a day and also eating less carbs to prepare for competition thus he will get tired faster. Low or no carbs and lots of cardio will give you less endurance. Now lets say a bodybuilder is in his offseason he wont be doing cardio because hes trying to bulkup. Doing 60 minutes of cardio a day while your trying to bulk up is counter productive. Now if you were to say oh well I wasnt talking about heavyweight bodybuilders. Well then your off topic.
  11. Read that quote you took from me again MikS. I said a boxer would be a tough opponent, a bodybuilder would be a much easier opponent then a boxer. A boxer is used to throwing punches and moving around a body builder isnt. A bodybuilder will get tired when he starts to move around. Have you seen body builders lean against the wall when there back stage in a competition they are damn tired from flexing there muscles. Bodybuilders can have good flexibility for there size but they wont have as much flexability as a smaller person. Warp spider is 100% correct. Some heavyweight professional bodybuilders have difficulty tieing there shoes they are so big.
  12. one of my friends has hypoglycemia and she usually jsut finds whatever when she starts to feel grogy. Id recomend crackers and peanut butter, some cheese sticks ,some peperoni sticks, beef jerky
  13. Hit that sucker as long as you can everyday for hours. Hit it untill you cant lift your arms then hit it some more. Do this for about 3 months then take a full week off. After that week off repeat the cycle youll develop good punching power. Some people say its over training but first you want to develop a foundation. Get the muscles memorised with the movements that way youll get faster and faster. After youve done the cycles for a year and have developed a good foundation. Hit the heavy bag for 10 rounds or so (approx 30-40mins) whenever you train.
  14. You cant block a punch ? True its better to dodge a punch then block but really ive had people try and throw punches at me just cover up they will hit your forearms or your forehead. Unless you dont consider that blocking.
  15. When I was at 6-8% I had more energy. You never read all of my post BladeLee. At my Pre-contest stage when I was at 3% thats when I was tired all the time. Also 6-8% is good you do have energy but not as much if you had 10%. Thats what bodybuilders do befor contest they ingest like no carbs or very little. Yes it is unhealthy thats why I never did enter I ended up getting blackouts and stuff thats when I started to eat normal again. Right amount of carbs, protein and fats. We did my body fat percentage using calipers. They are pretty accurate. Next to dunking yourself in a big tank of water but thats pretty unpractical.
  16. I agree with warp spider. A big guy who has lots of firm muscle will generally be able to take a pounding. ANd a boxer or a Muay Thai Practisioner will have a high tolerance for pain as well. However it depends on how much muscle they have a well built boxer will be a tough opponent. A bodybuilder will be a much easier opponent. If the guys muscles are really huge, you need to dodge and move around him all his blood will go to his muscles and he will get really really tired. When he gets tired he will get sloppy then go work on him. Generally a small guy wont beat a big guy thats why they have weight categories. A Flyweight is not going to be able to take on a heavyweight.
  17. forgot to mention.. Unburnt carboyhyrdates turn into fat. So all those people who like to eat salads all day and never work out. Are basicly getting fatter.
  18. if you have low blood sugar then it is possible you are hypo glycemic. I reccomend always carrying a little snack with you to keep your energy lvl up when you start to feel bad east somethin. Also I recomend eating more proteins and pastas. But also do lots of cardio when taking in lots of carbs.
  19. Here's a topic. Who would rather be a master of 1. or Jack of all trades but Master of None. Each have there good points each have there bad. Or in a sense are they equal ?
  20. I like striking. Grappling is good too. People always used to say a grappler cant take a striker. Now People say a striker cant take a grappler.
  21. what do you eat ? how often do you eat ? how often do you exercise ?
  22. What do you like striking or grappling ? Do you want a philisophical and traditional art the involes as much mind as it does body? Do you want something that you can lean fast and hit hard ? Would you rather use your feet or your hands ? There are many questions that you need to ask yourself first.
  23. Do pushups every second day, take a break let the muscles recover. Eventually a person can work themselves up to well past 100. It just takes time I also Highly recomend 3 basic weight lifting exercises. Squats, Deadlifts, Bench Presses. I like the old saying if you want bigger arms do squats.
  24. Personally I think people who use weapons while fighting are cowards. Uncomfertable with the skill they have with out the knife,or club or chain or whatever. But if one was to be attacked against a knife a good method to learn is to have a partner with a crayola marker and you where some old dirty clothes preferablly something of a light color and practice techniques to rid him of the knife. If you take away his weapon you will take away his confidence.
  25. If a tree falls in the woods does it make a sound if no one is around to hear it ? Some say yes some say no.
