  1. They rewroye the engine from the ground up for the latest build. Theres only so far the tech can go before everything needs to start over, although HL 1 used the quake 2 engine..and was then added to for condition zero which looks ok given the age of the underlying code. Doom 3 won't actually be photo quality but you can tell from the screenshots that its pretty near. PC Gamer (UK) printed a D3 screenshot onto photopaper and it looked really good. Fingers crossed anyway but I still think HL2 is going to be the best of the buch.
  2. I know exactly what you mean Monkeygirl. I remember once when I was in town I held open the door for an old lady, she looked shocked/surprised but grateful and managed to say thanks. I said to my friends "Why do people always look surprised when im nice?..", they said it was because I have really short hair so old people assume im a thug! But yes it is nice to make someones day like that, give a good impression for the rest of us young thugs out there..
  3. I saw the pic I liked the pic I took the pic
  4. Newcastle, England Its in the North East
  5. LOL - I saw it coming but it was still funny
  6. Doom 3 sub-par??? Its near photograph quality, the engine won't be sub-par. The game may be, I don't know but the engine definately looks good, and has Duke switched to the UT '03 engine, last I heard it was using the original unreal tournament engine ( a suped up version anyway)?
  7. Fireka the word your looking for is naivety I was talking abouyt the modern idea of chivalry when I started the thread because by and large the original code of chivalry was treated as a joke with only a few people really sticking to it. The knights in shinning armour portrayed by things such as the camelot ledgends were by and large very cruel men, no doubt there would have been some good in many of them, but the amount of cruelty they were cabable of is quite frankly astonishing. The code of chivalry was used by such people just as a means of keeping up appearances ie: a modern day crime lord donating money to charity etc: I also agree with what Martial Artist said about over chivalrous types who look down on women and the super feminist women who hate chivalry. I to take pleasure in being nice, little acts of kindness can improve peoples days no end - do unto others etc: Also I think that there is unfortunately some truth in what Fenris-Wolf said about chivalry being sexist towards men - when women expect chivalry it is annoying, i've seen girls at school walk up to a door and stand there waiting for some poor boy who is carrying her bags to open the door for her!..
  8. Sounds very Bruce Lee inspired by the way the author talks on the site, but does make some good points the inter-relation of all arts and styles ie: where he says you could teacha boxer how to open his hands and make him effective like that quickly but a normal person with no training would still recieve a kicking.
  9. This is kind of a broadening of the "Matter of Honour Thread" started by Seraph in the general arts section. Do you think shivalry has a place in the modern world and if so what is it/does it mean? Eg: not hitting women, holding doors open for women, giving up seats for women (especially pregnant women/old ladies) etc: And do women actually appreciate chivalry in a man?
  10. I sued to be of the attitude that a man should never ever hit a woman and as Martial Artist says, chivalry is a good character aspect. Then I started sparring a girl called Vicky in lessons she told me that I was stupid if I didn't hit back if I was actually attacked, she made a good point. Ignoring gender you would always respond to being attacked - whats the difference defending against a 5'9 women as opposed to defending against a 5'9 man of the same weight/build? The difference is in your mind. So whilst chivalry dictates that I should hold a door open for women it doesn't mean that I should accept said women then proceeding to knee where it hurts etc:
  11. Don't quite get what you mean would you like to extrapolate please....
  12. Hmm sorry didn't see that one, but I went and explained it a bit more fully anyway.. I assume by counter techniques you do mean being winded and nothing else?
  13. Valithor brings up a good point - instructors can and occasionally do have a sense of humor! My instructor will for example tell students to be quiet or else he will kill them - we don't take that as gospel truth though - perhaps little timmy should have though RIP
  14. Just did some checking up somewhere else and kiai's are also used to stop you getting winded when you get hit, because they are used on that all important last strike where you may not be able to block at the same time. The kiai would drive the air from your body leaving you hard to wind. EDIT: hmm I would agree that BL over did things for teatrics and as it happens im not a great fan of any of his films, but the documentarys I've seen of him training show how good he really was (very).
  15. Windpipe is probably what you trying to describe - it wouldn't be anatomically correct to call everything the windpipe but people would get what you mean - just another nugget of wisdom to help boost my post tally..
  16. Skipping from white to yellow is OK as yellow stripe isn't a full grade (im using my own styles guidelines here if the TKD system is different then you can probably ignore this post:)). Skipping orange tip is OK too but from orange up to blue - no thats a full grade and in this case skipping shouldn't be neccassary if they are ready for blue now they should have already have graded to green etc:
  17. I think judo can be effective but it has gotten the reputation of being a sport and not an MA. However I would say that if strikes are not taught until BB level then lower grades (but still proficient) would have problems if faced by more than one attacker - whilst as said above they could tie someone into a pretzel theres always going to be another person there to kick them in the head.
  18. Use his personality to your advantage, get him teaching the classes that could do with a yelling at or would not respond badly to a hardcore teacher. ie a hardcore teacher for the hardcore classes. Just say that you want someone else to have a go at teaching the kids. Theres no real need for this to become a major problem.
  19. If you train in a school hall or somewhere similar you will often find gymnastics type climbing frames. The idea is to tie rope around your wrists and loop it through one of the bars to make a kind of a pulley system-this means when you punch if one hand is faster it will start to get the other one working at the same speed and the returning hand will help project the striking hand towards the target. You could also use two pieces of elasticated (bungee) rope tied to the wrists and the poles and use them as resistance aids.
  20. Try to remember the 7 p's they come in useful before gradings. -Proper Pre-Planing Prevents P*ss Poor Performance Or Kiss -Keep It Simple Stupid
  21. Wed - 7.00 - 8.30 Thurs - 7.30 - 9.00 Friday - 6.00 - 9.00 And whenever else I can, including seminars and gradings etc: Thats a minimum of 6hrs a week then..
  22. In a complete opposite to this story my grandparents live in a small town built on a hill-plenty of flat ground nearby but they went ahead and built it on the hill anyway-its the paperboys I feel sorry for.
