Do blackbelts have a responsibility to....
GrrrArg replied to karatefox's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Phone the cops first, estimate the risk and if you can help then do so, but if you stood a good chance of being badly hurt or worse, killed, then keep back and wait for the professionals to turn up. -
Too old to start?
GrrrArg replied to The Red Guy's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
No way, your probably about the perfect age to start serious training. I started at 13. MA isn't age discriminatory. -
^^ fairly normal, infact I would be more worried if getting kicked "down there" didn't hurt like hell and knock you out of your stride for a bit. I normally have to re-learn how to breathe afterwards, and lo-grades do so love getting that one kick in there...of all the ones not to block..
-
Incidentaly I've just gone full time for my club. This means trying to get new members and helping out in more classes. Don't know how long i'll do it for but it does show you can make a career in the MA's.

what to do about school costs
GrrrArg replied to stonecrusher69's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Over in the UK the church is actually encouraging some vicars/pastors/priests to take MA due to increasing violence to wards the churches and their vicars. -
Opening a new school, would love suggestions, etc.

Good luck. -
I will tell you what I think when I get there.. IMO there are sevel plateu's in karate training (prob other styles as well), yellow belt - sure your pleased that you just got your first belt but then you notice all the darker belts and think, I can't ever see myself being that good..whats the point in continuing.. Same thing happens around Blue Belt, you get there and think, damn im only half way there.. Then theres Black Belt, you think well im there now, why bother continuing? I've seen this happen to fellow students and recently a family of three who trained together have simply stopped coming back, it actually annoys me, our instructor has put alot of time and effort into training them and they are simply throwing it all away.

It does indeed depend on the child. But it also depends on the instructor, some just aren't capable of teaching children, this isn't a bad thing and its not their fault, but children are harder to teach because of the low attention spans and understanding.

I'm getting sympathy pains for you..damn

to stretch or not to stretch - is that the question?
GrrrArg replied to Icetuete's topic in Health and Fitness
Dynamic stretching will cause your muscles to react in a protective manner and shorten their range of movement in the long run - making you less flexible. -
I would also point to asthma as a possible problem, I got simmilar symptoms when I was younger fortunately the asthma has recessed now. BTW asthma cannot be cured and does not go away totally it just tends to subside after a while - but its still lurking..

This is kinda gross. Sensitive stomachs beware

I don't know for deffinate but: Most viruses can't survive in the air for any real length of time and can't be passed on by a simple physical contact, and with warts - they are a symptom of the virus and shouldn't be contagious unless perhaps they are secreting puss, and even then you would likely have to ingest said puss to contract the virus. My little sister has a few warts on her hands (mostly cleared up now), the doc said not to worry as they weren't contagious. He also said removing them could just irrate the virus more - although this is probably just cheapness on behalf of the NHS -
Yes, deffinately. It hardens up the knuckles a bit also, so when you hit something it doesn't hurt as much. Personally I can't see why anyone would do push-ups on their hands at all, it must hurt them as much as it did me.

I use my karate membership card as a kind of informal identification if I have nothing else with me, people don't really react that much so im considering marking it down as a 5th dan and dripping blood on it..

Seiunchin, thats how I've always spelled it, so yes there are different spellings for it.

How old when you started?
GrrrArg replied to mouko_yamamoto's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion

What you are describing is not true chivalry. A gentleman will do the things you describe without making any kind of show out of it, nor would he tell you you are being silly. Power is not the issue...subtlety and courtesy are key. There was a "touch" in that post which was making the same point you just outlined. Bart the Lover wrote: Thank you, thank you very much, im here all week.

The UK govt is starting to make sure MA teachers have an NVQ qualification (one of the senior instructors in England for my club is actually working with/for the govt on this one so i've heard) but its strange because teaching MA previously will make for an easy pass for most instructors. But its a good idea and should help to cut down on McDojo's.

Nah, they'll always find a way to get you. -
I had a purebred Black Labrador who made it to 14 and a bit. He was called Jasper. Currently residing in a box about 3 feet under the back garden.

Ben "Defiant" Rutherford You play by your own rules and to heck with the consequences. Some might call you rogue, but you see yourself as a shade of gray refusing to be defined. Authority is for the weak and you will do everything in your power to overcome 'the Man'. Vital Gear Includes a black leather jacket, tattoo and brooding presence. Or Grrr "Valiant" Arg Slaying the dragon and rescuing the damsel in distress is what you are all about. All hail the age of chivalry! Never one without a stylish hat and elegant table manners, your fellow warriors call you a leader and a man among men. Vital Gear Includes a trusty stead, strong sword and the heart of a romantic. Both sum me up pretty well..
