Grappling arts vs Striking Arts
aznkarateboi replied to lilolpete's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
By the way warpspider about your last comment, do you think that a grappler would limit himself to grappling if he had an opportunity for a devastating strike? no, he'll see the random deadly weapon and think "i could use that, but im a grappler so i don't know how to hit someone with it" -
Grappling arts vs Striking Arts
aznkarateboi replied to lilolpete's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen on this forum. I want you to try something. Get a grappler to sit on you while you're lying on the ground (this is most likely the position you would be in if you fought a grappler). Tell him to curl his hands into fists and begin to punch your head. While he's doing that, try to bite his fingers (and get your teeth knocked out) and try reaching up, grabbing his head, and pushing it down (while your head is being repeatedly bashed against the concrete by his puneches). -
Why do forms/katas begin with left movements?
aznkarateboi replied to TKDLadyInSC's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
why not? -
why do karateka's train with stances such as the forward stance, back stance, and crouched stances? do you use them while sparring? fighting?
-
when your left hand is grabbed, do the lower block motion with it while simultaneously bringing ur right arm under your arm and your opponent's arm and executing the inner middle block move with the knuckle of your thumb making contact with you're opponent's right elbow. this should break the arm
-
share some grappling techniques that you've found in katas. i read somewhere that the double block in heian sandan is a throwing/arm breaking technique
-
it works ur muscles a lot
-
jump kicks are ways to kick high without leaving openings in kung fu

But isn't karate meant for self defense, not attack?

MMA vs. Reality

WarpSpider, as this is an online debate and typos are possible, I believe that you are the one that needs to rethink the definition of the word 'argue'. In short, you should try harder to point out mistakes in the opponent's argument, not typing accuracy. -
With both traditionally equipped, I believe that the Knight would win hands down. Speed/Agility: Knights hand down, fightingwise, Samurai had the strategy of one hit kill, which definently doesn't allow for speed, as most of their time was spent parrying and positioning for their blow. Also, Europeans were and still are generally more athletic, strongerm and faster then Japanese. The portrayal of lightning speed and hundreds of blows that you see portrayed in books and anime are simply not true. Knights=greater Honor/Passion/Spirit: Knights had Chivalry, Samurai had Bullshido, chivalry involved honor, kindness to ladies, and politeness while bullshido (yes i know it's supposed to be bushido) emphasized emptying your mind and other traditional mumbo-jumbo. Bullshido also states (and this is a fact) that if any peasant that offends the samurai in any way, the samurai has a moral obligation to slice off his/her head and those of their family members. This resulted in most of the samurai's training being either meditating or hacking peasants to death in the streets. Knights=greater Offense: Samurai win this category due to their use of two handed weapons, which might I add are remarkably weak for two handed weapons due to their curved edges which increase speed and lessen power. Samurai=greater Defense: Knights win this category hands down, European metalworks were far superior to that of Japanese in the medieval times, Japanese samurai were also known to wear wooden armor. European knights also generally carried shields. Knight=Greater HMMMM.... who would winnn???(sarcasticly) btw: it has been said that samurai were killed in droves by mongols while the samurai one by one went up and proudly announced their ancestry of samurai and had their wooden armor and spiritually protected bodies pierced with mongolian arrows.

I asked my teacher about it, he said that when you reached advanced sparring (there were different levels) , you would start using applications in sparring. Trust me my school knows what their doing, they always do well in the Full Contact part of the Annual National Chinese Tournament, which this year was held in Pittsburgh and its actually a real tournament. In basic sparring we do drills, like slipping and brushing jabs and blocking kicks and stuff in intermediate we start sparring and in advanced we go full contact and do applications. -
