It's not just attack, attack. There are defensive movements and blocks that put you in a good position to attack in order to defend yourself. I agree it is very agressive and if that is not what you are looking for then I agree with you. I would tend to say Jujutsu is good for defensive and offensive techniques that lend themselves well to a practical person. Just my 2 cents.

Defensive work from the guard
Treebranch replied to Rich67's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
The point I was trying to make is that you may not realize that someone is garnishing a weapon until it's too late. That's why staying on your feet as long as possible is very essential in real situations. In sport do whatever works. -
Solo I'd express these concerns to your teacher. Maybe others in your class feel the same. It's worth a try.

Defensive work from the guard
Treebranch replied to Rich67's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Both people with knives? No. One or the other with the knife on the ground? Yes. In the guard with a knife? No, but sounds interesting. My comment was to comment on another possible scenario, where it's wise not to be tied down to the attacker. That may be what he wants in order to cut your brachial artery or puncture your lung. -

No, Budo Taijutsu rarely teach weapons techniques. (Sarcasm!) -

Natural said: You totally under estimate Jujitsu. If a true Jujitsuka has a Karateka and about to toss him, it's already to late. Jujitsu has some really good punching and kicking techniques as well. It all depends on what Jujitsu. We take your balance before we throw you, so unless you can knee and punch while falling, I'd like to see that technique. -
are real fights necessary for becoming a good fighter?

Yes, I think it helps. But if you never have to fight than you've lived a rich life. -
Do you think weapons training helps your unarmed skills?

BudoSpirit said: [quote]If you ever get to train in any authentic Kobujutsu you will find practically everything that’s done with weapons can be used as empty handed techniques. The footwork in weapons training has helped me no end. I was just trying to see what other MA practitioners think of the proposed question. I study Budo Taijutsu and from you described I'm sure it has a lot in common with Kobujutsu. So basically I know where you are coming from. -
Aiming to bounce or to go through?
Treebranch replied to YoungGrasshopper's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well I say if the hit knocks your opponent down so you can stomp him, then it was a good hit. If the hit left him standing in pain, but still in the fight then I guess you'll have to hit him again. -
Aiming to bounce or to go through?
Treebranch replied to YoungGrasshopper's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
No we are not confusing penetration with follow through. We understand how to strike I hope. We saying are that if you bounce the hit the force is cut short. It will still be a good hit, but the effects of a strike that has follow through is much more damaging to your opponent. One the opponent get's hit two the follow through effects his balance and therefore your next strike won't be anticipated. I can't stress how important taking you opponents balance is. I you can control their balance you have them. Of course every situation is unique, but generally speaking that's what happens. In our MA will have both strikes with different purposes. -

Follow through is very important and essential for powerful strikes. Follow through also displaces your opponent more and you can take advantage of that. The bounce punch is good for causes reactions in order for a good finishing hit, which is a follow through punch. The best example someone gave here was the Jab and Right cross analogy. Jab hurt, but rarely finish the fight. The both have their purposes, but one is clearly has more power behind it than the other. -

Good points SevenStar but, what some people may assume is complex may not be for certain people or if you study that MA. All those simple or easy or effective techniques usually are found in almost any viable MA. The Judo example for instance is a good example of a technique you will find in many MA's. What I'm trying to say and what you said here is that training something over and over is effective, with a resisting opponent. Also, like you pointed out about some things having to be modified in practice to make them safe. I think that after having many years of doing the same thing over and over that modifying it in an instant will come easy. I would say try techniques that you feel are difficult until you get it right. I know there are times when you get in a clinch or in a situation sparring or what that you can't figure something to do there. That is what having a larger library of techniques comes in handy. If one thing isn't working for you switch it up and do something else. I see too many people trying to muscle their way out of holds that can be broken with a lot less strain. So I encourage everyone to look outside of your own MA and you will find things that will give an edge and keep certain special techniques hidden. Just because you may not be able to figure it out doesn't mean that other won't be able to or already have. I think it scares people to think there may be people out there that look like average Joes that will wipe the floor with most people. -
If you don't know this stuff and you study MA's then I'd suggest going to another school. This is the basics that is essential one of the most important parts of any MA.

Some things take more effort and understanding to do than others. I think sometimes people confuse EASY TO LEARN with MORE EFFECTIVE. -

I just think that many MA's have a lot to offer, but it takes a particular fighter to show the effectiveness and to know how to use it. This is good for Hung Gar to have a good fighter out there winning fights. Maybe now people will realize the all MA's have something to offer. -

So do you think he would have done just as well with out any Hung Gar training? -
Hwa rang do is the Combat MA that TKD came from. I've studied TKD and now I study Combat MA's and they have nothing in commong. If you try those high kicks and high speed in battle you will tire fast and be killed. Combat MA's the good one's teach you that you don't have to use all that energy in order to defeat someone. Study other MA's before you judge the one you are in. I used to do TKD so I feel I can give a fairly educated opinion.
