  1. My Stepson and his father take 7 star Praying Mantis Kung Fu. I am a big fan of the Japanese arts, but I am completely ignorant of the different styles of Kung Fu. My question is, how does Kung Fu, specifically 7 Star Praying Mantis, differ from karate. What are the classes like for Kung Fu students? What are their tournaments like? Does this art have a lineage?
  2. Haha, that's some #truth right there! Easy for someone at the top to look back fondly on the hard times behind them. Of course, it a pretty hard sell for a white belt to say "White belt is the most important belt!"
  3. Because people who show up for a trial class and never return get a white belt. Its a mental game, a way of knowing I'm not a newbie, that while I have Mountains still to climb, I have at least started on the path.
  4. When I did judo, no one wore undershirts, they already got tangled up. All of my BJJ friends wear rash guards. In Karate, it seems about 50%/50% for males. Women is most MA classes tend to wear at shirts, for obvious reasons. but what are your thoughts on men wearing undershirts under your gi?
  5. Anyone seen ?WHile it still have his unqiue, demented breed of humor, it seems more poignant that any of his over videos, almost out of character. What do you think? Is their a grain of truth to it?
  6. It was a great show! Wish it was still around!
  7. Anyone have a favorite fictional Martial Art? What are would you like to learn? Mok'bara of the Klingons? The Drug-enhanced, prescience MA Prana-Bindu of Frank Herberts Dune? Déjà-fu is Discworld? The Gun Kata of Equilibrium? Lightsaber fighting? Rex Kwon Do? Ameri-do-te? Frank Dux style ninjitsu?
  8. Yeah, that's what someone told me in class tonight when I mentioned using YouTube to help me get the full kata down. Not sure why. I respect their decision, but it seems kind of old fashion for the times we are in. You can find almost the whole curriculum for other arts on YouTube (BJJ is a good example). It doesn't replace in class instruction from a master, but to does help the noobs work on their homework a little.
  9. I don't know what your full kata curriculum is, but since you mention Fukyugata Ichi, I recommend getting Shoshin Nagamine's book, The Essence of Okinawan Karate-do. It contains all of the kata of Matsubayashi-ryu (Shorin-ryu), including the Fukyugata. Well, I wasn't look for books, but it's actually funny you should mention that, because I have the book! I bought it years ago as part of a research project for high school, on Okinawa(I was a navy brat born in Okinawa, so it's always intested me). Guess I'm going to spend the weekend at my parent, digging through boxes in the attic! Haha That's for reminding me, I forgot all about the book! I tried to learn the kata in it, but the dance step set up was too hard for me to understand at the time. Now they I'm in karate, that will be a great supplement to my training!!!
  10. Maybe I wasn't as specific as I need to be. I'm in a class, I'm looking for supplemental resources because is like to practice Kara more than 2 nights a week, and there isn't a big private lesson scene in my area. I've been taugh the kata, but as I'm new, I'd like to study the movements from variety of sources to get my solo training on the right track.
  11. As I'm new to karate, I'd like to accelerate my training at home my practicing my Kata. I'm not really that concerned with rank, but at the same time, I'd really like to get out of this white belt ASAP. I've got Fukyugata ichi roughly memorized, but I'm concerned practicing it too much without an instructor present will cause me to develop bad habits for poor form. Do you guys have any favorite sites or youtube channels for breaking down Kata movement by movement? My style is Kenshin Kan, if that makes any difference.
  12. Yes, this isn't the first time my right shoulder alone just starts hurting. Guess I'm just old enough to actually care about it now. I've done Boxing and Judo in the past, and this did occur. Probably the day after the 2nd class of the week was when I noticed it. Thanks for the advice. If this persists, I'll definatelly get a referral for a sports medicine doc or ortho to look at this. I'm getting too old to just ignore possible injuries.
  13. What kind of rope/striking surface did you use for the Makiwara?
  14. Do you guys bag gloves or hand wrap when doing bag work?
  15. Everlast all the way! I'm strongly against free standing bags, they don't have the same feel they don't have low striking space, the base makes getting in close impossible and a good kick sends most of them to the floor. Do you have the capability to hand one in your home? If not, Look into some stands.
  16. The show is dead, but Master Ken still posted videos Every one is a while.
  17. I have to say, the " " scene from was my favorite.
  18. Thanks guy! Follow up question: I was a boxer for a number of years, and I still hit the bag for fitness purposes. Will hitting the bag with the drills I used as a boxer have any impact (positive or negative) on my Karate? I'm sure it will help with fitness and power, but how boxers punch is somewhat different from how Karateka punch. Will sticking to the punching I know cause problems with my technique, as I'm still fairly new to karate?
  19. Perception is a lot of it. You say "what a person of their size could be expected to be capable of doing" but there are plenty of welterweight boxers with the approximate dimensions you listed that can knock a man out without any trouble. Look at Pacquaio, 5'5", runs under 150 lbs, and over half his wins are KO. Learn WHERE to hit, HOW to hit, and the rest is TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN. Traditional training, weight lifting, calisthenics, etc.
  20. You have to remember that some here don't really know the awesome that was Walker. I still remember that episode. I recall a podcast episode were they interviewed one of the Machado brother and he talked about how good a guy Chuck had been helping them out and how dedicated to training he was. Their lives are incomplete! 3 time world karate champion who trained with everyone from Bruce Lee to the Machados, given his own show where he is a member of one of the most elite law enforcement units in the world! They even let the man !!! As a kid who was both into martial arts and in Texas, it was the highlight of my week!
  21. My right shoulder has been known to give me trouble from time to time, but it was nothing serious. I has a boxer and judoka for years in my younger days. Now I'm 30 and taking karate with my son after being out of spade and out of practice for quite some time. And my right shoulder is really acting up after a few weeks of karate. I think it's the push-ups and other calisthenics that so it. It's a dull ache, like a bruise, it hurts when I raise my arm above should level or when I cross it over my body or pull it back far enough. When I palpate the area, the soreness seems to be centered in the front of the acromion process, and goes up my sore to towards my neck. Anyone ever have similar pain? Any idea what this pain is from, and any good home remedies to help alievate the pain?
  22. He had the Machado brothers on an Episode of Walker. I remember, it as the first time I had heard of BJJ.
  23. I have thought about doing that, but I've been out of the game for almost 10 years, just now getting back in. I'd feel like a fraud. Maybe Once Ive ranked up a little in karate, which I just started.... It'd be nice to see more of an intellectual presence on YouTube, too. If you search any art on YouTube, the first 100 results are "this art vs that art" and it shows 2 really poorly trained artists duking it out.
  24. I don't beleive so. The quality of the training is whats it a McDojo. The term comes from McDonalds, and while greed may be an issue for the company, the main problem most have with McDonalds is the poor quality of their food. Money is a factor, but if a school has irritating (even arguably predatory) billing practices, that doesn't mean their training is lacking. A school shouldn't be judged by how it keeps the lights on and pays the instructors, but on the type of training they provide.
  25. I see what you're saying, but I don't think it's fair for those schools. If they train well, why should they be shamed for charging a premuim or showing interest in moeny? A good instructor is a trade just like plumber or electrican.
