I avoid "military based" systems like the plague. Its a marketing term. Hand-to-hand hasn't been the main focus of training for decades now. In todays war, if your soldiers are having to judo throw and karate chop their way out of a mess, its because something has gone terribly, terribly wrong, in a "We're goners, Just lock onto our GPS and drop everything you've got" kind of way. Police based systems are a little better, but they have a different goal than civilian defense. You aren't trying to capture anyone, you're just trying to get away. I wouldn't say the price is a red flag, if it does what is claims, you should except to pay a pretty hefty price. But all the other claims are very questionable. There are only so many ways the human body can move, and Traditional martial arts have explored all of them.

C3 has spent a great deal of time in various states of disassembly through the series. At some point stuff just gets lost along the way, haha. That's my guess.

Thats pretty much how I've always viewed it. Being against Kata is on par with being against no-contact drills in any other activity. If you're against Kata, you're against Shadow boxing, you're against running plays, you're against using a bat weight, you're against target practice, you're against Firefighter challenges, you're against obstacle courses, etc. But Karate is more than than, it's also the curriculum of Karate in physical form. It's taking everything you have learned and turning it into a cohesive lesson.

Supplements for training
Judodad_karateson replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in Health and Fitness
Thats some good stuff. Sometimes I'll even soak my gi in the stuff. Without having to google... What IS Dihydrogen Monoxide?? That's not peroxide, is it?! Just guessing....wrong....probably. If you haven't gotten hooked yet, don't start! -

Do long do you WANT to hold it for? How long CAN you hold it for? Expert C says you shouldn't hold a stretch at all, that it should be dynamic. Expert D says stick a carrot up your butt, and whole the stretch until the carrot falls out. My advise: hold it until you feel stretched enough. Your own body is pretty good about telling you how it feels, and that's feedback on expert can mimic in a lab.

Is it too late?
Judodad_karateson replied to Monocus's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Kid, you're 16. You aren't "too old" for anything at this point!!! And SO WHAT, if you are "too old"? Ever heard the phrase "better late than never"? Do what you want. If you're still not convinced, I suggest reading this article. -
Gloves in MMA
Judodad_karateson replied to The Pred's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Same reason boxers wear gloves: It makes the fights more marketable. Bare knuckle fights have less strikes, more superficial cuts that make it look more graphic than it is, and end much quicker. Taking out these 3 factors makes it far more palatable for causal observers. Its all about that $$$ -
Does anyone take any supplements specifically for your MA training? Not just for your normal work out routine, but for before and after class?
-
If their main focus is karate, then yes, you will be staying on your feet. Also, while JJ and Hapkido do have ground components, they are still standing-focused arts. Honestly, BJJ is the only commonly taught Martial Art that focuses on the ground. Unless you are going to a full BJJ school, you're probably going to spend most of your time on your feet learning standing techniques.

How many MA schools do you pass by?
Judodad_karateson replied to JR 137's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Its not just the UK. I live in a community of 100k, more if you count the outlying community, and we don't even have a boxing gym here! We have 3 karate schools in churches, one Kung Fu school, 5 TKD schools (most of which are McDojos), and one MMA/BJJ school which is really just an overpriced cashcow for a retired cop with little to no actually BJJ or MMA experience. No judo, no kempo, no Aikido, no Boxing, no kick boxing, nothing else. I'd like to think there would be a market for it, but the constant failure of numerous schools from all the arts listed above says otherwise. I've always been a MA nerd, and I frankly just do not understand this at all. Every community should at least have a boxing gym, right!? What is wrong with society? -
Yeah, exactly, that's kind of what I meant by describing this as Aikido-like. In the Karate throws I've seen, I'll see a flow of blocks and strikes, and somewhere in their someone get some kind of joint lock, and then BOOM, he is in the ground. Now sweeps on the other hand, the ones I've being taught, are very much like what I learned in Judo, but more focused on taking a striker off his balance than a grappler.

You misunderstand my grievance. Its not a question of what are the minimum requirements, the question is, are there any requirements at all if a Blue Belt is teaching it? This kid can't even use leg locks outside of basic ankle locks in a tournament! How can you be a qualified CI if you aren't even allowed to use the full sports BJJ curriculum in a competitive setting yet? But the answer your question, I believe to be CI requires the artist to come "full circle" so to speak. You have learned all the moves, asked all the basic questions, experienced both sides of every move. If Blue belt is enough to teach students with zero oversight, what is the worth of the knowledge being taught at the higher ranks? If he is perfectly qualified to teach alone at blue belt, be the alone educator for a whole community, what knowledge of any value is being passed on at the higher ranks? By saying this guy is qualified to teach on his own, you are degrading all skills taught above his level. -
I'm an old, out of practice Judoka who is currently studying karate. Sensei has been taking us thought a few karate throws lately. What I found interesting was that most of the throws are more reminiscent of Aikido throws than Judo throws (from my so far limited knowledge of Karate throws, mind you). Thoughts?

Study on long term effects of push-ups on MA Seniors?
Judodad_karateson replied to IcemanSK's topic in Health and Fitness
I've always been wary of pushups for this reason. If you do a class that is Pushup heavy, go home and do some pull ups to make up for it. Balance in all things. Its a great exercise for chest and tris, but you need the antagonist muscle groups worked, or injury is inevitable. -
Ah, Marketing.

Why did they use to call Kickboxing Full Contact Karate back in the day, and why did they stop doing that?

Ive been a student of Buddhism for years, but can't say Im into pureland. They take themselves too seriosuly. Pureland is so different from other school of buddhist thought, its almost feels like an amalgamation of Buddhist, Hinduism, and Christianity.

What your thoughts on getting shin guards that will accommodate gi pants? I want to get these but I'm worried they won't go over the pants. Have you ever worn guards under you pants? Do you prefer them over or under, and why? Note, I'm asking for sparring purposes, not tournaments.

Why have ranks above shodan if everything you need to know is at black belt? According to the Rener Gracie interview, Cottrell has continued to train with the Gracie's in Torrance including for recertification as an instructor. Exactly, why do we even have ranks? Whats the point of having belts at all if a blue belt can run a school, lets just return to the old ways, when students wear one color and inatructors wear another. -

Patrick, his age is but one issue, my biggest concern is his rank. Why even have ranks above blue if everything you need to know is in belt belt? Who is teaching HIM to rank up? Who is teaching students paat blue belt level? -

sensei8 nailed it, but I want to add my 2 cents. We aren't judging, we are questioning the wisdom of giving a low ranking teenager his own school. Kids can teach, low ranks can teach, but can they own and operate their own school? Not his first MA, no. But there can't be 2 martial arts more different than Kempo and BJJ. Kempo is striking focused, preferring to remain standing. BJJ emphasizes ground work so much, there have been many SUCCESSFUL BJJ practitioners who compete in mixed grappling tournaments by sitting down and butt scooting to their opponent! It'd be like given a Chemistry instructor a Physics class because "He has science and teaching experience." Its not the same. Yes, and these rare kids generally aren't doing something like teaching an extremely technical style of Martial Arts. BJJ took one waza set from Judo, and expanded it to a level of specificity never before seen in MA. BJJ is not creating an App for social media or thinking up a new way to sell a product. Helio had years more experience in BBJ than this kid, and he always had his older brother to fall back on if he ran into something he couldn't handle as a 16yo. He wasn't given his own school at 16. -

Yeah, I have nothing against young people and lower ranks teaching, under a sensei. Often times, teaching something helps your own understanding. But I like you, I have a hard time believing he has the experience in MA and life to be giving them role.
