  1. Thanks guys. I know my kid will love it, and with a 2 year old on his way to the age he can start, I'm looking forward to watching my oldest now grow as hr shows his little brother all the tricks and trips he is learning now.
  2. Grabs? joint locks? Low kicks? Why doesn't anyone do tournaments like that!?!?!
  3. Depth is definitely good. Tournaments are just one aspect. Though it was already a blast, and always gave your training more focys, my son is only 5 right now, so its not like he is going to be competing any time soon. And I'm old and need to get back into shape first, so likewise for me, haha. So if understand you correctly, this style isn't geared for sports, but may give a better understanding of the art of Karate as a whole?
  4. From what I've seen of the points sparring karate, the back-and-forth sounds like more fun, to be honest. What Organizations tend to use that kind of style for tournaments?
  5. Good stuff, man, I'm in my 30s, and getting back into MA after almost a decade of being out. I was thinking I was too old and would feel silly starting again, until read a Karate by Jesse article on the issues I believe his phrasing was "you're always too late, it's always to late, thing always use to be better, and it's always a bad time, just do it anyways." Starting in your 30 beats your 90s by miles!!!
  6. Thanks guys, its good to be here. Is this site at all related to a older, forum site called Karate.com? In my young days, I would frequent that forum, and I see a lot of similarities from that site.
  7. Thanks, just the kind of information I was looking for. So how hard it is to train independantly to learn good techinque for points sparring? Would a handful of private lessons from a different style help? I want my son to learn full Karate, not a sport, but tournaments are just too fun NOT to do. Also, I'd like to send you a PM for more info, but apparently there is a 25 post limit before a noob here can send PM. would you mind PMing me so we can chat further about Kenshin Kan specifically?
  8. Thanks guys. I'd probably drive a good 200-300 miles from my current location, anywhere in Texas for the surrounding states.
  9. Hi everyone. I'm am old Judo and boxing guy who hasn't been active in I ER a decade. My middle son is starting to act like I did when so was 5, rough-and-tumble, so it's ctime for in to learn some martial arts. I'm looking into Karare schools, as I'm a big fan of Japanesse arts being a Judo guy. I'm just here looking for advise and to ask questions, get my head back into the game, so to speak. I'm excited to start training and attending torunamants and rank tests with him, watching his love for Martial Arts grow like mine did, and hopefully encourage him enough to stick with it, like I didn't.
  10. Hey guys. I'm an old judoka and boxer who is looking into Karate for my sons. However, I have a few concerns, I was hoping you guys could help. I found a school is a reputable kenshin kan dojo that includes a once a night class that combines adults with kids (I'm will be taking it myself, and the bonding is a motivation of rme as much as anything ear), which is what I'm looking for. Price is right, Senseis and sepias seem like good people who know their stuff. My concerns about tournaments. They aren't the end all and be all of Martial arts, by i loved them in judo, and I want my boys to have the same experiences(plus I kinds want to get back in on the action, I've been out of condition for over a decade). The problem is, I'm not seeing a big tournament curcuit in Texas. Maybe my google-fu is weak, so can you guys direct me toward some kumita tournaments(not form)? I don't want TKD, I'm a huge fan of Japanesse arts, but tournaments hold a special place in my heart, and if there isn't a big field of competition within driving distance, that might just be a deal breaker. What are the major, legitimate Karate tournament organizations in America and Texas?
