Strikers mind vs Grapplers mind
Judodad_karateson replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good point, this is a really good point. Although, it's my personal feeling as a teacher that mass attack situations are better won by running or not getting into them. I teach knife and gun self defense at higher ranks, but I'm always very clear this is only desired If you have nowhere to run. Running is always the best option. That is what I was taught in Judo. I don't know what school CT went to, but we were taught and trained on fighting 2 and 3 on 1 at my Judo school. Mostly it was how to line up your opponents and throws them into each other. Just keeping your attacker all in one big clump together and give them everything you've got -
Thanks! Yeah, another school in town I was looking at a while back had this problem. He seemed to be linked to the gracies, even held a seminar their once, but when you dove into the masters history, he was just a retired cop with a judo background. If all you know have Judo and police self-defence, they why not sell it as such? It seemed to be the kind of school that would hop on every bandwagon that would put gis in the dojo. Don't tell me you teach Judo, BJJ, MMA, Systema, Krav Maga, and AIkido if you only have BJJ, MMA, and a single Judo class a week. Its great if you KNOW these arts, but if you don't have classes dedicated to it, I'm going to assume you're just trying to sell me on resume alone. The whole place gave me a bad vibe, and I ended up in Karate, which is why I am THRILLED to discover a BJJ school, a seemingly REAL one, in town. Don't get it twisted, Karate is a wonderful art, and my school is a great school with a knowledgeable master and plenty of talented black belts, and a great kids program for my son... but I'm a judo guy, and frankly, Karate is just kind of boring in comparison. I need to get back into grappling, striking arts just are not my cup of tea. I feel like I'm mentally and physically designed for grappling.

What gloves do you spar with?
Judodad_karateson replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in Equipment and Gear
Interesting looking gloves, I have to say. How do they compare to normal mma Gloves? They're not that bad. It makes grabbing easy and there's enough padding where you don't hurt anyone. They look like they have more wiggle room. I find MMA gloves really don't allow for much articulation on the first segments of the fingers. No small circle JJ here, haha. -
Strikers mind vs Grapplers mind
Judodad_karateson replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Maybe that is what I'm seeing. It's about being comfortable in someone personal space, and having someone in yours. Judo was so personal. First day of class, you're getting in someone face, not just in rondori, but just to practice technique. Class was stretch, break falls, then close personal contact for the next hour or so. From day one, you're hands are all over someone else, yanking their gi around, rolling on the floor, throwing them. In Karate, you don't need any contact at all to start out, the Basics, the Kata, the one step is probably the most contact a white belt is getting if they aren't sparring much. -
I've been thinking about this a little lately, but there seems to be a subte different between grappling and striking I just can't put my finger on. I've done judo in the past, still a judoka at heart, but I've been taken karate lately. We both wear gis, bow and the same time, use the same langauge, similar terminology, both from the same country of origin, but the mind set/personality/attitude just seems different in my Karate school as my Judo school. Maybe it was just my schools, may it is the age gap between when I did judo, and now, but has anyone else noticed a mental different between Artists who prefer to focus on grappling and those who prefer striking?

How do you advertise your school?
Judodad_karateson replied to Luther unleashed's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I just want to add, as a non-instructor, that for Millennial, a web presence is vital. You could have grown up on Okinawa, learned from Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Relson Gracie, and Steve Seagal, trained BJ Penn and Ronda Rousey, and won Olympic Gold metals in Judo, Boxing, and TKD, but if you don't have at least an active facebook, if not a Web site as well, you may as well be a scam artist teaching fly-by-night Rex Kwon Do. When I see a school I've never seen before, the first thing I do is Google it. You HAVE to make sure you can be located online in this day in age. A web page is such an easy thing to set up, if you don't have it, people will be asking "What else doesn't he have? Running water? Power? Real MA training?" -

By the way, these are the kind I normally use. I have a Pair of macho dipped foam, but I rarely use them. http://www.amazon.com/Ringside-Combat-Sports-Style-Gloves/dp/B012ATTBZS -

Good advise, John, but what gloves do YOU use? -
For as long as I've been in MA, Ninjitsu has been spoken of in MA circles in mocking tones. More often than not, I'm the one to started the mocking tone. Most of the promises made by Ninjitsu relate more to the Western mythos of the Ninja than the actual historic shinobi, and most of its short coming are covered under the catch-all "if I was using everything I know, I would have killed you" kind of nonsense. What I'm wonder is, is there anywhere on the planet Earth outside of the Military where people are actually taught skills related to the actual ninjas? Word of warning: I will Dim mak anyone who brings up Frank Dux.

What kind of gloves done everyone prefer for sparring and why? Do you use dipped foam, MMA/Kempo style fignered gloves, boxing gloves, etc?

It took a little research, but the CI was trained by a Gracie trained Black belt. I'm just not use to a school that doesn't laud their connection of the Gracies, not matter how obscure. I'll be attending a class. I feel back leaving the karate school I just joined a few months ago, but my heart is in grappling. I may still stay in Karate for my 5-year-olds sake, he just earned his first stripe and is so proud of himself, but its just good to see more grappling in this area.

A JJ school has finally opened up in my area. Can I get everyone thoughts on this? The Schedule seems pretty typical for a JJ school, Gi, no gi, and a smathering of Judo, Kickboxing, and MMA classes here and there. My main concern is that they don't list a lineage on the website. Has anyone heard of these guys, or one of their affiliate schools? Ethos JJ and MA

Pragmatic!? Problem?!
Judodad_karateson replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I understand you may not be able to answer due to it being an ongoing issue, but can you elaborate further on the "why" of all of this? Do you still think it is sabotage? To what end? Was it just be grader incompetence? -
MA uniforms as Street wear

At the beginning of , guest Jeff Ross posses an interesting question to Rogan. He says getting a black belt in TKD at a young age gave him the confidence he needed to be a comic. This isn't news to anyone, but who here has a good story of a non-MA related way you MA experience gave you the confidence to do something?

Gloves in MMA
Judodad_karateson replied to The Pred's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
MMA has become its one unique sport, now. We may as well call it vale tudo or pankration at this point. I don't believe you can SAFELY and EQUALITY test striking and grappling arts in one fair contest. The rules will always favor one or the other, or even certain aspects of one or the other. -
I didn't expect to have high hopes after the last several movies in the series, but there is a new Kickboxer coming out and it includes the Orginial Star, Jean-Claude Van Damme, plus wonderful Martial Arts Acting talents like Dave Bautista, GSP, Gina Carano, and Darren Shahlavi! After what Mark Dacascos did to the last Kickboxer, I didn't think I'd ever care about the series again, but this might be pretty good!

Some schools will start you off as a 'no-belt' and after a set amount of time you become a white belt. But Majority of schools you start as a white belt immediately upon joining the dojo. I've always seen white belts as no belts. It's a uniform piece, not a rank. What would you then say if there was a rank prior to white belt where you physically have no belt? I would say no. The Karate uniform is based on the hakama worn by the Japanese. These are worn with a obi. No obi in an incomplete uniform.

I love ya, JR, but I hate posts like this. The guy just wants to put in some research. He isn't looking to become a youtube-taught Martial Artist. Im sure he knows not ammount of video views can make up for real life masters.sjwoing you the rope. This is his first class, its a good idea for h8m to research what he learned, make sure he is getting high quality teacher.
