THANKS! That Indiana one looks interesting. I'm thinking that this: http://www.southernwisconsinopen.com/tournamentflyer.pdf might be our next tournament.

that being said? My son is not a part of the Wu Shu looking stuff. They are a different set of kids with a different set of instructors. I also am not a big fan of it all...but I get it. In sport karate as you can get used to fighting "situations" in a safe controlled environment. I like that there are many, many, many opponents to face as you go around the various tournaments. But I would like something similar but "better?" Any suggestions over what offers similar adrenaline situations against an opponent?

Excellence at anything is admirable...but I'm not so fond of the glow stick twirling stuff either.

FB ads will get you some hits...but superior (and in the same price range) are google text ads. I have tested both and find the google ads vastly superior for promotion.

oddly enough the local tournaments that are run by my son's school are VASTLY superior in efficiency and conduct to the larger tournaments in this area. They give you fight times weeks in advance, fights are never more than 10 minutes off of scheduled times, a bit cheaper than other tournaments, all judges are in uniform and at the very least 2nd degree black belts...parents are allowed right up to ring but there is a lot more room than at other tournaments. Good amount of participants too as it it is for 5 schools. But all the bigger talent is in the disorganized, over crowded, poorly judged open tournaments it seems.

all the tournaments in the mid west seem to be like you describe...I'd love to hear of any open tournaments in the region that you guys would recommend.

Zach fought that girl from last series of vids again...
AdamKralic replied to AdamKralic's topic in Karate
Thanks for taking the time! I agree on her...I always worry that she might be here...or well anyone that we know might be. I'm not a overly negative or judgemental person at all...but sometimes it's hard to honest and non-judgemental. Like I said super sweet girl...but slow, short and...I'm thinking that she might not be all that flexible either. The gingerninja video is a great one. Thanks. Will go over that for sure. Coach brought up Zach's footwork sometime during that practice...same thoughts as you..work more off bounce less off steps. -
The attacker generally will be IN your striking range to start the fight...no? Even in shotokan if one is quick this can be used to advantage. All of the fade kicks would be a surprise to the attacker I'd imagine. Especially the fights that start with pushes to intimidate. He'd likely register the half step back as fear on your part and automatically come forward. Or maybe the push itself already gave you the distance you need for him to walk into a sidekick to the jaw. How good is the attacker at fighting? Did they used to be a semi-pro boxer? Have they gotten into 1,200 bar fights? Or is it a drunk loudmouth who never gets called out on his behavior? Fights imo are hard to define. Seen great fighters go down to lucky shots from lesser fighters many times. (as I'm sure you have too)

Final practice for her before AKA grands... Coach asked Zach to do grands in the team portion but we refused (politely of course) for two reasons...well three. 1. He is not a black belt yet and it's a black belt and up event. 2. Coach himself could not be there due to family situation. We had a very capable alt coach to use...but Zach and I barely know this guy and well it's Chicago...there'd be 4 million people there and just too much chaos w/o our reg. coach imo. 3. Zach's not there mentally or skill wise yet. He's at a tough spot...better than all the kids in his normal classes...not as good as the touring fighters. I definately think he's on track and doing all the right things...but imo there is no shame in being honest about where you are at NOW. I don't know how she did at grands...but she's a pretty darn short 17 year old who is not fast...idk. For example/reference...my son turned 13 like a week ago and he's not particularly tall for his age. She's got like an inch on him...maybe two if she stretches her spine. She does fight smart. She does have a nice punch. Super sweet girl...I'd certainly root for her. w/o further delay...I have a total of 3 fights I believe here in two videos. The entire hour practice was pretty much warmup...and then a good 45 minutes of fights. (just how I'd like every practice to be) I show this to prove that my son and I listened to comments from last time. More variety in his kicks/rev punches...he still needs to get the ranges of non-side kick stuff down better...but atleast he's throwing them in sparring situations which will lead to learning the timing. I thought that he used the counter rev well throughout a good portion of the hour... anad a short third fight.

youtube is a fantastic resource. it really is. there are a million 5 minute lessons on there from absolutely everything from stretching to advanced kata. As a beginner nothing is more important than stretching imho. Above average flexibility takes years. Don't wait years to start. Wushu has amazing stretches...you should look up that as a goal.

The 2nd post's small vs tall vid: Nice use of angles. LOVED it. Will show my son those tonight. Really liked the one step angle into torso roundhouses. That looks like a killer sparring move against ANYONE. The opponent will watch your torso/head move...and the roundhouse would be as if invisible coming up behind them. So easy to drill. I'm excited over here. We can't catch kicks either. 1 second grabs/pulls are allowed...but I've yet to see anyone at all do that ever. very good stuff overall. Angles and speed are a short fighters bread and butter. More countering.

I am making a website for a friend that is a personal trainer who just so happens to have like 6 or 7 years of jeet kune do under his belt. GREAT guy. Anyways he's paying me partially in cash...partially in working with my son on some athletic workouts n whatnot. He came by last night for an hour...great stuff he was teaching. Really solid plyometric depth jump type exercises...then did a kind of rotating punch combo for attacking as people circle...I loved it all. Some bag work... Zach was having a good time doing it too. Zach gets bored in his karate class now. They teach to the lowest common denominator it seems. I cannot believe how basic the drills are for the black belt sparring class. Same basic drills they had as red belts...and for that matter blue belts. My friend has done a good amount of MMA fights...the stuff where people get injured n whatnot...not looking for that for my son...but still can't help but be interested in seeing what the next few lessons bring. Your thoughts on JKD vs karate?

MALE pro athletes do circuit training all the time. Especially athletes that need it all - endurance, strength and speed. (basketball players for one example)

I started my son when he turned 10. I NEVER viewed martial arts as a babysitting service and quite frankly it disgusts me to see parents that do. I have seen many of the 5-8 year old classes and I see very little useful information being imparted upon those children. I absolutely do not see them as effective self defense lessons. It does seem more like semi-organized play time. Not blaming the classes/instructors...I just do not see children overcoming any violence from an adult at that age no matter what you teach them. Therefore the BEST protection that can be imparted upon children of that age are the watchful eyes of responsible parents. But dojos need to make $$$. I get that. I really do. As to my son? I feel that he could get a strong D side/side kick in that might buy him enough time to get help...but still the size/weight difference? It's obviously still tremendously in attacker's favor. When he hits 14 I want him to take the 3-6 month Krav Maga course at a different dojo as a supplement to his normal karate training.

UFC 168....WHO WILL WIN?
AdamKralic replied to quinteros1963's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I always thought that Silva's legs looked liked bones with some skin on them...but never thought I'd see a break like that! Weidman is not flashy at all...but he is very sound both on the floor and standing. Once the air gets let out of your tires so to speak...it never really comes back. Like Mike Tyson. Absolutely dominant...until he wasn't. Didn't it seem to flip overnight? -

My wife and I have differing opinions about diet for our son. She believes that he is a child and as such he can eat anything. He is thin and athletic...so I try not to be a grinch about it and let her feed him 1" thick slabs of white bread coated with 1/2" of jelly as a snack. And a bunch of other stuff that is equally poor in nutritional value. She is in better shape than me by appearance...but my doctor thinks that I have the "guts" of a racehorse...and hers is always getting on her as she has a bunch of imbalances. So be it. Yesterday the doctor told us that my son's blood sugar is waaaay too high. That got my wife's attention as I was being selfish somehow in wanting only "good" food in the house in the 14,000 times prior that I mentioned that chips, soda and jelly are not food groups. But when a doctor says the same thing...THEN stuff can change. *sigh* To ease the "blow" on my son...I can up with a (imo) awesome analogy. It totally worked and is the reason for this entire post. Son, you are a Ferrari. Most people treat themselves like economy cars. They end up looking like beat up economy cars as a result. As a Ferrari...you cannot just put cheap gas in your tank. You run on premium fuel. THIS worked 5,000%. He lit up as soon as he saw that I saw him as a Ferrari. He understood it right to the core of his being...instantly. It wads not a boring adult to child lecture about saturated and unsaturated fats...simple vs complex carbs...all that will come...but for now it was a 2014 Ferrari vs a rusty 1984 Honda Civic. If you have trouble with your child's diet...try the Ferrari method. /2 cents.

I would have to whole heartedly agree with this. Learning about any physical activity by reading is difficult. My favorite analogy is swimming. Let's say that I could not swim at all. If I read a book...can I now swim? If I read a book AND watch swimming on tv...can I now swim? No. I have to get in the pool. The more time in the pool? The stronger at swimming I will become. AFTER I am a STRONG swimmer...then and only then will a book from a GREAT swimmer even make a lick of sense.

Ummm... I was named this by my parents. I always saw myself as more of a Alex...or maybe Scott but you get what you get.

Random recent Fights for Zach...input on vids inside wanted!
AdamKralic replied to AdamKralic's topic in Karate
We've watched Ross Levine. Doing his drills made Zach's D side sweet. Like I said earlier...I was happy with the practice. She is 17 and a 2nd degree black belt...he is 12 and a brown belt. She never came back to the team practices after that day btw. (I did not post the fight where he beat her...he connected really hard to her head in that one.) If someone told me Zach could fight for the world championship in a week but has to fight her for it? I'd be super pumped. Zach can beat her due to her total lack of speed and the fact that in big tournaments...3/4 of what she got points for in the practice would not count. And...She cannot kick at HIS head level...he CAN hit hers. I also do not like her guard for NASKA style tourneys. You do not want the techniques that in your face. Ask to people we look up to...he likes some of that UFC stuff. Jon Jones, Chuck Liddel, Shogun Rua...that kinda stuff. We are working on Chuck's spin back kick. (has more reach and seems easier to connect with than spin back hook) I tend to like the wu shu stuff like Jet Li. Thanks for the Ross link. We will go over that as Zach likes Ross' style to start with so that always helps. -
younger student in adult class?
AdamKralic replied to tdk539's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
does he run away a lot? I have seen that waaaaaaaaaaay too much with my son and kids that he fights. They run until the time is up. It's a different situation from yours for certain as my son is either their age or a few years younger so he can be a bit more aggressive than perhaps you feel comfortable with in fighting someone very much younger than yourself. I taught my son how to cut people off. How when there are no ropes (like in boxing) that there are still walls. I'm not advocating that you drive a side kick into them when their back touches a wall...because that seems to make people never want to fight you again...but even with a runner...there are things to learn. Cutting off people is a very valuable skill. I have to ask...IF he was hit solidly...would that make him take it more seriously? I've seen people where it would not unfortunately...but have also seen a few that get far more serious when they realize that pain will be a result of them being too "immature." If it's the former and not the later? Just ask your Sensei to rotate fighters as you really do need variety to prepare for well anything really.
