How does Caffiene effect mental health and illness?
AdamKralic replied to chrisw08's topic in Health and Fitness
Drink tea. It has caffeine...but less. It is all around better for you in every way imaginable. Get a good night's sleep. Do not drink any caffeine for 2 hours before bedtime. You should get at the minimum 8 hours of good sleep. Schedule 8 and 1/2 hours taking into consideration that it probably takes you a bit to go to sleep. My favorite teas are of the "English" variety. Earl Grey and Orange Spice. Both are based off of black tea. I like milk and a bit of sugar in my tea. I have however had a good amount of oolong. I buy that loose leaf style and steep it and brew it using small Chinese clay pots. (I went to several real deal tea houses in Taiwan and watched the whole "ceremony") -
I agree with Harkon72. Sony - HDR-PJ380 is a quality camera. Get yourself a tripod and a external microphone to go with it. The tripod and external mic are important. Make sure they work with whatever model you purchase.

corny as it sounds...age is a number. Not even an important number. Want to know what IS an important number? How old you will be when you die. Without knowing that date an optimist is to assume that they are in the prime of their life at all times. Or see it this way: if you are 56 and destined to hit 100...and another is 33 and destined to hit 35. Who is younger? Now having said that...I am 42. My son is 12. That little bugger is already faster than I ever was at any point in life. He eggs me on constantly now to point spar him. He no longer fears my reach advantage at all. (and I mean at all) *sigh* Just a few years ago I could cut him off with ease... Now I reply: Ok smartie pants...put on some boxing gloves and see what's up. ;P (as a boxer I wasn't quick either...but my head is 99% bone apprently and everyone that I punched had considerably less bone mass in their noggin) Hey that style of boxing gave Foreman a looooooooooong career. ;P

Good job! I enjoyed watching that.

how to punch that way
AdamKralic replied to vasilist's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
In addition to more focused training...it's also the mechanics of the motion. Take Tyson's uppercut and right cross. If you look closely...Tyson often transfers energy right from the ground up to his uppercuts. few of them in this video he springs so hard that he gets air between his feet and the canvas. This transfer of energy upward is used in conjunction with a torque twist from his waist. Both flows of energy crash into the opponent's jaw at the same time. I will try and find the sport science episode that i referenced earlier. -

Boxers hit harder. Taking off the glove would not reduce the power at all. The gloves are there to keep the opponent alive. Mike Tyson said the first thing that he did when getting his gloves on was to work his knuckles through the material so as to be right up to the leather. A boxer would looooooooooooooooove to fight with the karate sparring gloves. They'd get 10x the knockouts. That being said? A proper sliding side kick would generaate even more force. All boxers do is punch. They train punching...as much as you train kicking and punching combined. Would you not expect better results from doubling your training in one aspect? -

You don't learn swimming without jumping in the pool. Put me in line with my fellow "harsh" commentators. The adversion to contact will make everything worse. He will lose every time with such a "tactic." He simply has to fight a lot more. Going over anything is a waste until he loses the fear. I was afraid to drive a car once upon a time...I got over that the same way your child must get over his fear.

Do you guys use Vine? Vine of my son...
AdamKralic replied to AdamKralic's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I will! Thanks for tips...we have hand pads so... -
I'm asking as I'm handy with wood and my son has a rainbow of belts that are just hanging off a coat hook in his room. I saw that I can buy one for good prices...but eh I like building stuff anyways...winter is coming...and well that's project time here in Chicagoland. So store bought or hand made...if you got 'em...show 'em.

I Love Boxing, BUT...
AdamKralic replied to sensei8's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
That would have been very interesting. I boxed for a few years as a teen...and I played chess. (still play chess from time to time...boxing? Eh...not so much) Dagnabit. Missed out. C'est la vie. -
I'd choose the school that sparred the most. (and with atleast light contact) You can work on form/kata/weapons at home and get 100% of that art but with 0% of the watchful eye of an instructor. If you listened and observed well in class however...you'll have a great idea what you are ideally to do. You simply cannot get 100% of sparring unless you have a human across from you. More often...the better. I'll take the fighter that has fought hundreds of fights over the fighter that fought dozens of fights...every time. Just like the person that has done their forms hundreds of times has the advantage over...

sparring stances... to bounce or to not bounce
AdamKralic replied to student_karateka's topic in Karate
Your feet never really leave the ground. If they do it's only by like a 1/4" and for a millisecond...and it's only one of them at a time. The motion is varied too. Speed is usually consistent though except when angles are part of the movement as well. Wait on the pattern long enough and that person will have come already. You are also more likely to react to a fake that comes with movement. Don't react? They are coming FAST. I'm surprised to hear that people believe they can time it. Jamming someone? Sure. But you can always jam. That has nothing to do with a person bouncing or standing still. Now if you are just world's faster than me...can take me in a millisecond opening type speed...than yeah you can catch me in a millisecond of a movement. Bouncing...not bouncing...you'd still be world's quicker than me. All that being said...all people are human. Human's are not cookie cutter beings. There is probably a good deal of truth any way you slice it. Try it. -

He did it. Didn't even come close to landing. Kids basically were running in reverse as fast as they could. Granted you could not run backwards that far in a tourney...but you can in the dojo. Zach was getting flummoxed so he drove a sidekick into a kid's gut when he was pinned on a wall. Instructor of that class did not like that. Will have to see if a side into a spin straight back kick gets him a bit more reach. -

Any comment is a good comment. It's all good. He cannot kick through a CEntury Bob head. Bob does not react as a human would. You can knock a human over by their head, you can get the head itself to move on it's own or with a lot of help from your foot. Similarly the body too will aid in that object moving. Bob is more resistant by a factor of a gazillion. (that may or may not be a guesstimate) EDIT: I did look at that spin kick tutorial and THAT man could move Bob's head...my son is not strong enough to do the same at this point. In some ways that hinders really going all out on a technique. Truth be told I'd imagine following through is easier than going at that velocity and knowing that you will encounter a object that will not allow your leg to pass through. We have this issue with axe kicks and Bob as well. Zach does not like landing a hard, proper axe kick on Bob's shoulders. Bob doesn't give as much when struck as a human child will. Yesterday's class was cancelled...but tonight is his regular class. I am going to tell Zach to push his opponent with side kick to chest spam and when he has him cornered...pop with the back spin hook/heel/whatever. Zach at first had no "celebrations" after the kick...but the whole kick combo from me saying "go" to him landing after spin only took about 2 seconds. (Vines are mandatory 6 seconds...not a second more or less) We had to eat 4 more seconds! So I told him to "primp" for the camera afterwards...left it to him to decide what that meant. -

Zach practiced the side into a back spin hook and we decided to make a vine of it. -
sparring stances... to bounce or to not bounce
AdamKralic replied to student_karateka's topic in Karate
I will say this: I do not like bouncing straight up n down. That makes no sense to me. Bouncing a inch forward and backward does make sense to me. Better yet? Being bounce-y yet unpredictable. Vary the bounces. Distances. Rhythm. Angle. IMHO if you get a natural feel for semi-random bouncing...and use that with fakes...you can get 1/2 way into a technique before they react. -

First does your dojo even allow sweeps? Sweeps change a lot of things. Stance, Guard, movement. -

AdamKralic replied to AdamKralic's topic in Karate
If he misses the side kick, then spinning to a spin back or spin hook would be a good follow up. They are also good defensive kicks against round kicks. I don't recommend using a spinning kick offensively, unless its part of a combination. Generally, a spinning kick as your first kick has a lot of telegraph to it. Hmmm. So a slide side into a spin back hook...we did work that last night. It looked smoother than some other combos we tried. If he can pull it off "on tape" next time against her I'll post it. He's got a speed advantage on her...the movement, angles and setting up a second kick at a different level are all smart. His regular class is on Monday. Team class is Sunday. I kind of wish that order was flopped. -

Thanks again. The extended front hand guard? It's to catch/pass round houses. Since he went to that? I've not seen a single round house hit him in maybe 50 fights. Now granted he's fighting kids. Kids are easily dissuaded. They see him knock a few of their roundhouses down or aside...they get frustrated quickly. You can also use it against people that hold a side kick at belly level. Push down on their ankle/calf...leap to a hammerfist to their head. We do practice circle movement a lot. We also have practiced 2 step angle blitzes a lot. At home since he was a green belt. We need to get back to those against the girl in those practices. We were using circles and angles against EVERYONE taller than Zach. WERE. Buuuut...for the past month or so we were prepping for a tourney where they were very strict about matching to height. So why not feature Zach's side? It's strong. I have liked ALL the advice in this thread a lot. I really do appreciate it. REally. Zach is the "big fish" in HIS pond...but I've seen MUCH bigger fish out there in the ocean. -

This summer I posted a pair of fights where he blitzed five times for the five points needed and in the other he won 3-2 all off punches. That's what KILLS me about Zach. He sees he can score on something early...and holds onto that move like a dog with a bone for rest of tourney. -

Tonight we worked on slide side then same +add blitz. Slide roundhouse with rev after. Side kick to chest spam into spin back hook to head. Same but off a single side instead of spam. We also worked on two step angle blitz. Then we also did side followed by back roundhouse. (With both arms in close guard as you are right in front for that) then the move I described earlier (fake side, back round into hammer fist/rev) Went ok...can only squeeze 45 minutes to an hour out a night before he starts to fade on me. (I have to give equal time for homework and fun!) balance...no? Thanks guys...it'll be a long time before he puts all the pieces together...but onward we march.
