  1. Train with boxers for a while. Point sparring tends to be done with control and light contact, while sparring for boxing is done with control and harder contact. getting hit in the face hard will make you want to keep your guard high.
  2. Yeah, especially those going into law enforcement. I do everything in my power to avoid conflict, yet train more than most people who fight drunks in a professional capacity. I could say the same of some bouncers.
  3. Sorry I didn't make it, the snow was blowing. At any rate I'm a good deal too heavy as well.
  4. When the system is taught with the same curriculum, that is a really good idea. That would help keep testing honest. My school has associate schools that we share knowledge with, but they are different styles. Our high rank tests usually involve teaching your stuff to students from another school.
  5. Skill talks. What organization you come from does not matter if you can mop the floor with everyone. A good teacher is a good teacher, what should it matter that the politics backing him failed?
  6. Me too. I wonder how many other ninjas gave up for fear of shotguns.
  7. If women can join the military, what right can the same government have to say they can't fight in a controlled environment?
  8. Posting with a trot or gallop is similar to riding a mount in BJJ.
  9. This is an issue at the heart of all training. What are you training for? What are you training to defend against? Will your job require you to be in a combative situation? Can you come to terms with doing serious bodily harm to keep yourself safe? The mental aspect is very important. Normal, well adjusted people have issues with shooting or cutting someone, or for that matter, simply punching someone in their nose.
  10. I am an avid meat eater, but you are not. Have some beans and rice. Then you get the same protein. There is no need to compromise your principles. Just keep training.
  11. I attended an Aikido class once and asked to borrow a white belt. The teacher told me to wear my black belt, because I had earned it. Aikido is very different, so it felt quite strange to be wearing high rank among decent low rank students.
  12. I read this before going back to see the original post and my jaw dropped. But now I agree.
  13. Cain Velasquez is one bad, bad man. Too bad there are only a few world-class heavyweights out there to compete with.
  14. I was a nerdy 9 year old kid that was sick of being picked on. That and Bloodsport and Enter the Dragon.
  15. No we're not Bujinkan, they are more traditional than we are
  16. I can't imagine sparring with a line of fat guys with my name painted on their bellies one letter a piece, drinking beer and heckling my training partner. Sorry that image just popped in my head, football fans amuse me. really though, i find a rhythm to be helpful, some do better without it. Capoeira and I think Kali use music in training traditionally.
  17. Couldn't open the vid where I am (copyright issue), but I don't think anyone was serious about the "because I said so" thing. Sojobo Check this out, then. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Milgram_shock_experiments Some people do tend to place a sensei in a more than human role and follow without question. Too many questions can be annoying and disruptive, and small children should be taught to be obedient, but a teacher should be able to give an answer to valid questions. When I get some punk saying "that won't work", I show the that yes, yes it does. Rather unpleasant. But when asked how or why does that work, I should be able to answer.
  18. Can any Kung Fu art show a direct lineage from Bodhidharma? Or Pankration to Theseus? What makes an art legit?
  19. While respect is important, "because I said so" is a dangerous concept. Respect and deference are not the same thing.
  20. Interesting concept, but it would need to be trained with the people you are around all the time. I think this is most likely done by street gangs and cops. The smarter gangs and departments, anyway.
  21. That which you call the Tao is not the Tao? And a peanut is neither a pea nor a nut? Excuse me, I'm feeling a little faklimpt. Talk amongst yourselves. 10 points to anyone who gets the reference.
  22. About 30 years ago, one of Count Dante's students was run through in a dojo challenge. On a side note, I find it amusing that the spell check says "dojo" is wrong.
  23. I carry a folder in my pocket, and usually walk with one hand in said pocket on the knife. Takes about a second to have it out. So knife vs knife could happen. My Smith and Wesson folder will go through a heavy coat, tee shirt and five layers of duct tape with a quick slash. A dull kitchen knife I tried barely went through a tee shirt. So keep them sharp and oiled.
