https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb56dTPbcNs Look at the first punch landed by the guy in the first part of this video and what he does immediately afterward. The best reason to not take the first punch is that you might get knocked silly and have your head stomped on. Save the fair fights for the ring or cage when there is a referee and doctor there for the safety of the fighters. If someone is breaking into your house or has decided that violence is necessary because you are black, white, Protestant, Hari Krishna, gay, a Democrat, or Federalist, you cannot assume they will stop attacking you because you admit defeat.

I think they are legal in all of the USA. Where do you live?

Don't knock the Black Dragon Fighting Society! In just 6 weeks I learned the Count Dante Dance of Death and am now the world's most deadly man. That's why nobody dares to make fun of my cape.

You better pray that Godfrey Ho and Richard Harrison are feeling merciful when they hear of this remark. Harrison even defeated Napolean Dynamite. youtube.com/watch?v=hq1m4tLEy7M Here's proof.

Jiu Jitsu Vs Zombies
MasterPain replied to JiuJitsuNation's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Riots and looting are real and similar to the intelligence and aggression of the 28 Days Later zombies. Zombie Apocalypse readiness should include a plan for any disaster, natural or man-made that can occur in your geographic area. -
Yeah, my iron shirt technique has rusted through in places.

Generally speaking, the ones who say brains fall into the comedy-horror or parody genres. The trend recently is to have zombies capable of learning new behavior, see Survival of the Dead, in which a zombie rides a horse around the island, also a zombie eats a horse rather than human flesh. In the Walking Dead, we see zombies eat a horse as well as steal a deer from a hunter. It's hard to say what zombies will be doing in a few years. I still say that vampires don't sparkle, however, 200 years ago anyone would tell you that vampires are absolutely NOT attractive. Folktale vampires were more similar to modern zombies i.e. bloodthirsty rotting corpses.

Got a short spear to go with the buckler.

My suggestion, Mr Dux is that we don't kill the ninja zombies, but say we did, then turn it into a movie with great montage music. Seriously though, it's a good idea. Zombiehunters.org has the same concept for disaster preparedness, and even has charities that help victims of natural disasters. I think they were in New Orleans before FEMA.

Black tie? I go from gym shorts and t-shirt to jeans and t-shirt. A tie is a noose you put on in the morning.... Man I'm redneck. Be the Green Power Ranger. Just remember to only kick with your right leg, because a left leg kick was unheard of for Tommy..... I'm also a nerd.

This is more what I was trying to say. I would not discourage anyone from trying a new art, with the exception being someone who never stays in the same school for more than a month.

xbox kinect for training?
MasterPain replied to xo-karate's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would rather do things I saw in Tekken. Try to copy Hwarang. -
Half a lifetime ago, at my 1st Dan test, we had a student from an associated school sparring with us. He was older than me (I was 14) and bigger. He hit me harder than I wanted to be hit. I politely asked him to lighten up. A minute later he was still throwing too hard, so I politely asked him too lighten up. A minute later he was still throwing too hard. I ACCIDENTALLY broke his nose. Later on, our Sensei ACCIDENTALLY knocked him out.

Jiu Jitsu Vs Zombies

I think they groom and train poodles when no one is looking. -
11/29 50 minutes or so circuit of abs, jump rope, shadow boxing with 5 pound weights, abs, jumping on boxes and such with my nose and half my mouth duct taped (I forgot my snorkel) i.e. Wandelei Silva. 3 3minute rounds thai pads 3 3 minute round boxing 4 1/2 3minute rounds kickboxing at which point could no longer intelligently defend myself.

Bing less old and wise than Tallgeese, I say Judo, because it would work best in conjunction with Karate in a self-defense situation. That being said, to be better at Karate, do more Karate. One of my instructors said when he was younger, he came home from his martial arts class and threw 1000 kicks every night. He's 50 years old and can still kick me in the head almost at will.

Considering that you have no prior experience, I would have to agree with Ninjanurse on this one. And 6-7 months of basic Karate should translate well to almost anything. Every art has some version of a front, round and side kick, a lead and reverse punch, and a high middle and low block. These are all basic Karate moves. There will be a considerable difference if you go from a hard to a soft style, Karate being generally more a hard style than Kung Fu. Please someone correct me if necessary, as I don't know much of Shotokan specifically. I say this mostly because I believe in having strong basics before anything. A hard style is easier for a beginner to learn, in my experience, and provides a good basis for other things. I recommend starting the Karate school, then after 6 months or so when you move try a Chinese school. This being said, look at the self defense aspects of the training. Do the attacks being defended seem realistic? Is the art aspect as important as the martial aspect to you? Basically which seems more "you"? I like the idea of mixing in aspects from different arts like you say the Chinese school does, but perhaps you would rather have a long running tradition? How were you greeted walking through the door? That should be a huge deciding factor. At any rate, welcome to the site and to the wonderful world of martial arts.

Frustrated any advice?
MasterPain replied to Jay's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Look at it like this, you will never compete with that kind of weight difference, so there is no need to beat them. Instead, focus on improving your skill. Larger people are great for making sure your technique is good. And at 3-4 months, you're still learning to crawl, don't worry about walking. I don't even teach submissions until about 6 months if I can help it. Position is so much more important. -
Groin Strikes?!
MasterPain replied to sensei8's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I'm reminded of Joe Son vs. Keith Hackney. That being said, it is hard to pull off a good clean groin shot on the ground, about the best that you can usually manage is to grind your knee during a guard pass. For combative ideas for grappling, eye gouges are everywhere. -
Jiu Jitsu Vs Zombies
MasterPain replied to JiuJitsuNation's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
If a zombie managed to grab you, juijutsu would be more effective than almost any other art at getting away safely without getting bit, but I definitely to not want to grapple anything that bites, be it a zombie or malnourished crackhead. -
Materials (DVD/Book) to learn a Kata alone ?
MasterPain replied to nemcuon's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
With no instructor I would nor recommend kata at all. For the purposes you expressed, I should think shadowboxing would be more beneficial. I don't have a problem with kata, and it would be useful to fit your purpose, however I feel that a good hands-on instructor is needed to make kata make any sense. Check out Bas Rutten's videos on striking on the Youtube. You could make a good workout from them, and he teaches great martial arts concepts. You can see tradition AND practicality in his movements. If I had to learn from videos and train alone, Bas is da man.
