Any alterations in a written contract must be written into the contract. A verbal agreement does not hold water in court against a signed contract. And anyone who has you sign a contract knows this. They can verbally agree to anything, but if they want to sue, they have a contract, you have nothing.

Martial Arts Service Excellence!!
MasterPain replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What would be the criteria? Would a Shotokan teacher have to know Goju kata? Would collegiate wrestling coaches need to dance the Wai Kru Ram Muay? Would you have to have wins in sanctioned MMA fights to teach Tai Chi? It's a nice idea to provide a standard, but standards vary greatly. A car runs well or does not, martial arts are different. There are many types of martial arts suited to too many goals. Even in similar arts there will be differences in practice that would make a set standard nearly impossible to achieve. It is my feeling that a belt only represents your teachers belief in your ability, so the respect your belt earns is dependent on the reputation of your instructor. Too large of an organization would result in cookie cutter martial artists. The names of martial artists that are remembered over time... Kano, Myagi, Funokoshi, Bruce Lee- these people were innovators. Innovators tend to be silenced by a set standard. Often the ones we remember are the ones that shake the structure that exists in their era. Einstein's high school teacher called him an idiot. If such an organization existed, they could take board breaking and kata off of your tests, or make us light contact point spar on ours in place of the usual beatings. Either would be an outrage. Martial arts is a form of expression, to stifle anyone's expression is a dangerous path to walk and a bad precedent. Let others do what they want, even if it's dumb. -
That may or may not be true. But it's important to remember that knowing the moves is different from knowing how to apply each. This list in no way validates rank for anyone. If you want to know where you stand, go try out a jiu-jitsu class. The technical level of each technique is also a big deal. It's not enough to say, here's a kimura. You need to be able to explain what each body part is doing and where it's moving on the given technique. Lastly, it differs from organization to organization. The best example of what I mean is the place where I now teach. It's a school with an instructor who has trained in many styles. When I showed him the list, he reacted alot like you. However, despite knowing what the moves where, he was no where near ready for blue belt. I even brought in some of my blue belt friends to prove it to him. Again, not saying your skill isn't there. Just saying that some arbitrary list you find online is not a good benchmark. True. Aperson can know a jab, cross, hook, uppercut and cover yet not be a good boxer.

Next Generation Martial Artist
MasterPain replied to blade1116's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
At our school we recommend a school at a nearby town for kids classes. Life happens and there's just not time to run a kids class as well. The TKD school is a good place for the kids to start. Also, some kids learn better without a parent present, much like they listen to a teacher better than parents. Younger children like to show off, which gets in the way of focus. With older kids I think it's part of psychological development and the need for increased independence. -

Knife training clinics near Toronto?
MasterPain replied to rhilllakefield's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I'm afraid I can't say much about Toronto, but I will advocate the Filipino martial arts. They're more concerned with combative effectiveness than tradition. Look for Escrima, Kali, or Arnis. Being afraid of knives is not a bad thing. Training and gaining competence will help keep it from being a paralyzing fear, but to have no fear is to be deluded. -
She's going to work through a temp service for now, so I don't know if she can. But my sister works there and she gets a discount. Let me know if you want anything and I can ask her.

How do you handle forward moving aggression?
MasterPain replied to GeoGiant's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'd mention it. In today's society, it might save her a lawsuit. -
Being destroyed means the people who have practiced the art are better than those who haven't. Continue to get beat up until you get beat up less.

The business aspect is probably a major factor here. But here is something that our group does not always consider..... Art preservation. For us, art is secondary to combative effectiveness. For many martial artists, the art is important. You have a brown belt, and you research and contribute to our system from outside sources. This is great for our purposes, but if everyone did it, there would be no such thing as a traditional system.

Jiu Jitsu Vs Zombies
MasterPain replied to JiuJitsuNation's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
After the power outage from the ice a couple days ago, I realized that my furnace has an electric igniter, and we could not figure out how to run it from a generator. So I decided I need to get a kerosene heater in case of a zombie apocalypse. -
Olympic boxing and pro boxing coexist, despite being completly different.

The only Filipino ranger I can think of is the blue ranger on Power Rangers Jungle Fury. That was the best series in my opinion. It had Kung Fu, Muay Thai and Karate. Also the foot soldier bad guys were based on Jiang Shi. I always liked Jiang Shi.

I'm not sure, it's not televised or anything. But search Jason David Frank MMA on youtube and you can find his fights.
