  1. Welcome Tina, Hot-lanta. I'm about 30 mi. south of you.
  2. Welcome!
  3. Hello and Welcome to the forums! Enjoy your stay. Lots of good practioners here.
  4. So true Shorinryu Sensei. I'm all for free enterprise but to take someone's money and possibly give them a false sense of security that could get them or someone else hurt is not right. As our Hanshi has said "do you want a colored belt or do you want to learn Martial Arts" if it's the later be ready for a long haul. If you just want a belt he says he can get us whatever color we want for 5 dollars in about 3 days. I choose to learn the art. Hanshi will promote no one until he feels they are ready to go on to the next challenge.
  5. Congrats! Now your training really starts, or so I have heard.
  6. If the girls were 13 yrs. old at the time they didn't have to be forced. There is a thing called statutory rape. They were not of legal age to consent to such a thing.
  7. I originally started Martial Arts to as a way to spend time with my then 15 yr old son as well as learning some self defense. I honestly thought that my son would become bored and I was too old to start (35) and we would give it up after a short time. Fortunately I was wrong on all accounts! My son is still training even though the teenage life gets in the way sometimes, and I love every thing there is about the Art. Not only have I gotten into shape but I have learned or should I say I'm learning that Martial Arts is truely a way of life and not something you do every other day and forget about. So true about the basics, without a good solid foundation I believe one will discover his/her short comings as their training progresses. I also have been welcomed into a family at my dojo that is a very special one. The bond that we all feel for each other is a great feeling. I know if I ever needed anything that I could get on the phone and call anyone of my fellow karateka and they would be there for me. In todays world you my have many acquaintances but only a few true friends.
  8. That's very sad that they would take advantage of people who trusted them. It's a sad world today!
  9. Welcome, good luck finding an art that suits you!
  10. Welcome back!
  11. I'm from Newnan Georgia. The weather is pretty good here. We have all four seasons. It does get hot in the summer though. It's funny you guys should mention the weather in England. I work in International cargo for Delta and we get flights in every night over there. The plastic that covers the freight is wet quite often. We always say "well it's raining in England again" The flights from Ireland come in wet a lot too. So much rain would make me depressed I think. Oh well, hang in there, the sun has to come out someday!
  12. Practice, Practice! With what everyone else has said just stay moving. That doesn't mean to bounce up and down in one spot. Keep your body moving and shifting so your opponent will have to constantly change his/her way of attack. It can also put you into some good position for your own attack.
  13. Welcome to the forum!
  14. Welcome to the forums even though you have been here for a while. It's always great to have more knowledge on board. Pun intended!
  15. Welcome!
  16. I believe this site has the kanji for shotokan. Look down and to the left of the page. http://www.jka-usa.com/whyshoto.aspx
  17. Welcome to the boards! Glad to have you here my fellow karateka. G
  18. Hello Quiet Dragon, Do you mean Shotokan? If so, I believe that they don't practice weapon's until many years of training with their empty hand katas. I believe the JKA organization has 26 katas that they learn. Some of the shotokan guys and gals may be able to answer you better. Is there a specific weapons kata that you are looking for? P.S. - Welcome to the boards, you should go to the introductions section and tell us a little about yourself and let us all greet you properly.
  19. We hope so. The 7th Dan is a pilot and has to come to Atlanta every six months or so to do simulator training and trys to make it to at least one class when he's in town. The 6th Dan is very busy and trys to make it when he can, but thats not as often as we like. We're trying to talk him into moving closer. This is the first time that we've had them together other then one other time when they brought a student down from Boston (another student of our Hanshi has a school there) to test for his 2nd Dan. That was pretty incredible too see as well. Two and a half hours of testing and then he had to spar against our Hanshi the 6th and 7th Dans and his Sensei (3rd Dan) for 5 minutes each. He did it, but was totally exhausted in the end.

  21. Hello everyone, just thought I would share a little about our class last night. It was quite an experience, our Hanshi (9th Dan) arranged to have in our class two of his students who he has known basically all his life and trained them as children to the adults they are now. One is a 6th Dan and the other is a 7th Dan. One lives in another state and the other is a couple of hours away from our dojo. To have all that knowledge at you disposal was an awesome experience as well as very humbling. To see them perform basic as well as advanced forms with such percision and grace was something to behold. We learned a new kata as well, Dan Enn Sho. I love it already. It shows off five of the animal forms and is very powerful and graceful. I've rambled enough, just wanted to share with some fellow Martial Artist.
  22. Welcome, hope you decide on something soon. What choices do you have in your area?
