Count me in with Sasori. I believe that kata is the essence of karate, without them karate would be the mere learning of various fighting and self-defense techniques, expressing nothing and allowing for no aesthetic development. IMHO G95Champ has submitted a good article (see articles section above) about kata. It's a very good read, check it out.

Hello and Welcome to KF.

She had so much of her life left. It so sad to loose someone so young and talented. She sounds like someone who had already accomplished alot in her life. My prayers will be with her family at these very difficult times.

Welcome and congrats!

A student in our class recently asked our Hanshi about promotions and was told not to get wrapped up in thinking about the next belt. Ones attention and focus should be learning the art not the next color. He said when we are ready he will test us. Anyone can have a black belt for $6 in about 3 days but it doesn't make you a black belt. It must be earned through blood, sweat and tears for it to have any meaning. IMHO

Are you an uke? Why or why not
gheinisch replied to kungfumaster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Me and one other fellow seems to be the uke most often in our class. And I love it, no better way to get a technique down then to have it applied to you. Makes for some sore wrist, elbows and shoulders for a couple days but well worth it. -
Try this link they have all the Heian(Pinan) Katas plus lots of others. I haven't downloaded ant of them yet so I'm not sure how good they are. Hope this helps. http://ase.tufts.edu/karate/katavideos.html

I practice the Art of Hon-SHin-Do which has its roots in Okinawan Shorie Ryu. The following is from our handbook, we believe kata is the foundation to learning Martial Arts. In our opinion of course. KATAS OF HON-SHIN-DO: The Katas of Hon-Shin-Do are the essence of karate, without them karate would be the mere learning of various fighting and self-defense techniques, expressing nothing and allowing for no aesthetic development. Katas are the distilled concentrated wisdom, understanding, and experience of hundreds of great karate peak awareness. When one begins to understand them one glimpses a new world of untold internal riches. The primary meaning of the Kata is for the performer himself. If he is unable to immerse himself in the Kata and so release his emotions, or life force, a master will say of the performer that he is still "in the dance," that is, unable to emote or express his feelings at will. This poignant karate saying has an even more profound meaning when the sensei refers to a student "coming out of the dance." This is the highest compliment one can receive. The eventual perfection of the Katas leads not only to mastery of the basic forms, but also to physical and spiritual sensitivity and to complete control of all parts of the body. A good karateka first develops his Katas to perfection and later perfects his Jul-Kumite (sparring) ability.

I should have known he would be a fighting fish. How about - Toushi - fighting spirit; (will to) fight. Let us know what you decide.
-
How about: Kanshougyo - Japanese for aquarium fish. Maybe Kansho for short. or Katsugyo - Japanese for live fish. Here's one: Toto - Japanese for child's term for a fish. Good Luck in your name search. G

Christians and the Martial Arts
gheinisch replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Nice Article! In my school, The U.S. Christian Academy of the Martial Arts we are all christians and believe God comes before all else, but we also believe as Scorcho has said that you must have an understanding of the Art. Our Ministry and the Martial Arts OUR MISSION: To incorporate the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with the Martial Arts which will help build self confidence, and self discipline. In doing this we will become: -Guardian Angels for those who are weak and need defending. -Disciples to spread the word of our Lord and Savior. The U.S. Christian Academy of the Martial Arts The Martial Arts as we know them today have been around for hundreds of years. The Bible and the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ have been around for thousands of years. We must first look to the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ for inner strengths as well as inner peace. Then to the Martial Arts for our outer strength. God first, then Martial Arts. The Samurai believes that he must live life properly showing respect to every living thing. He lives a simple life. Pays all his debts regardless of what they are. Avoids all evil. Offends no one. Helps as many people as he can. Defends the weak and does what is morally right. This lifestyle is known as Bushido or Japanese Chivalry. He firmly believes that if he lives his life by this code of honor, then at any given time he is prepared to die. He lives his life as if this were his last day on earth. This amazes me because in studying the Bible I find that this is the way Jesus lived his life and the way he wants us to live ours. I see nothing wrong with learning others cultures as long as one keeps God first. Hope I didn't offend! "Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Respectfully, Greg -

I did a search and found this, don't know if it will help but might give you a place to start. The Way of the Wolverine Ken Tallack taught this to various people at a summer camp, including my present instructor, Michael Bernardo. It spread around from there, and Michael Bernardo commonly teaches this as a kata to perform at karate tournaments. Since I learnt it, it has been changed slightly by my instructor and he also introduced a version with some flashier moves for tournaments. I also do it a little differently in the occasional tournament as well. So, I know of four slightly altered versions of this form. I know that Bob Dalgleish from Sudbury created the original version of the form. Here's the web site: http://www3.sympatico.ca/jeffrey.muir/jeffnote.htm
