  1. My Hanshi feels that 3 yrs. is way too young to start a Martial Art. He'll take no younger then 12. He doesn't have a problem with teaching the very young some basic techniques for escaping or defending thier selves against an abductor, attacker etc. but feels it would be to dangerous to teach some of the more destructive techniques. He say's "would you give a gun to a five yr. old and send him on his way?" I hope the answer is no. Kids that age don't have a full understanding of what Martial Arts is all about (other than what they see on Power Rangers) and how it can seriously hurt someone in an instant. That's my opinion, I know some may disagree.
  2. Hello and welcome to the forum.
  3. Hello All, I study in the art of Hon-Shin-Do, it's a new style of Martial Arts with old roots in Okinawan Shuri-Ryu. Hon-Is True, Shin-Is fron the Heart, Do-Is The Way "THE WAY OF THE TRUE HEART"
  4. It truely is a small world. It's amazing how many paths of other people we cross on any given day. I've lived in Georgia all my life, can't say I blame you for getting away from those hurricanes and calling Indy home. I know you said that you just started training again, is kata a big part of your training? We do kata often. Leo says "so me someone who does kata well and they will also be a good karateka". It is very helpful in perfecting techniques. I know some here do not like kata but I feel they are the bases of what we do. See Ya
  5. These may already be here some where. But what the heck, I think they're funny. "He who throw dirt is losing ground" "Man who shoot off mouth, must expect to lose face." "Man who keep feet firmly on ground have trouble putting on pants." "Man who drive like Hell bound to get there." "The end of the day is near when small men make tall shadows." That's all for now!
  6. Hey LOILOI44, I just purchased a middleweight GI from Century. It has a 3" elastic waistband. It fits great and I like it just fine and the quality seems to be very good. The cost was forty bucks. You can check their web site out for more details. Hope this helps a little. See Ya, Gheinisch
  7. Welcome to the forums!
  8. Hello Eyeball-San, We train under Hanshi Leo Kozloski (9th degree) at the U.S. Christian Academy of Martial Arts he started at our church. He was the founder of the U.S. Academy of Martial Arts but got out of teaching for a while until Master Pachivas passed away and he felt a calling to start teaching again. What's so great is he teaches at our church (he is also a member) and charges nothing for the classes. My son and I started a little over three years ago and just love it. He is a great guy as well as a great teacher! We feel very fortunate to have him. We do have a web site if you want to check it out. It has Hanshi's history as well as a lineage tree and other stuff. I also posted a picture on the forums web site under dojo pics. Here's the link to our site http://www.crossroadsnewnan.org/ Just click on the Martial Arts link on the left. Good talking to you, keep up the hard work. I think yellow was my hardest belt to promote from! See Ya in the forums, Greg
  9. Hello EyeBall San, My Hanshi trained under Master Pachivas and had the opprotunity to work with Master Trias as well. Our style of Hon-Shin-Do has old roots in Okinawan Shorie-Ryu. A great deal of the terminology we use in class is traditional. Here are a couple of sites that might be helpful, a lot of the terms are very similar if not exact to what we use. I hope this helps! http://www.thekaratedirectory.com/articles/terminology.htm#Z http://www.karateplanet.com/all_pages/members/pages/i1_1.asp Gheinisch
  10. I started taking Karate classes with my son as well. My wife thought it would be a good idea for us to do it together. Now we are both Purple belts in the art of Hon-Shin-Do and wouldn't give it up for the world. Welcome to the forum!!
  11. Congrats on your promotion! It sounds like you have a good Sensei. It is good that he made you feel at ease, that's very important for instructors to do that. No life and death stuff, just go out and do what you know and have trained to do. Once in Martial Arts you become part of a large family with a great supporting cast. Welcome to the family! Congrats once again on your achievement. Gheinisch
  12. Welcome to the forum BlackBeauty! Keep up the hard work and you can achieve great things through Martial Arts. There is no such word as can't in Martial Arts. It sounds like you are dedicated and train hard in all you do. Keep going! Gheinisch
  13. Welcome! We have just started learning some of the animal forms. Very interesting. Look forward to seeing on the forums!
  14. Welcome to the web site. Great to have you here!
  15. I'm a Christian and the school that I attend is based out of a Baptist Church. The U.S. Christian Academy of Martial Arts always places God first and Martial Arts second. On our web site there is a page that better discribes our mission http://www.crossroadsnewnan.org/martialarts.asp Click on the link "Our Ministry and Martial Arts."
  16. Thanks for the welcome everyone! I look forward to trading opinions and ideas with all here. It seems there is quite a spectrum of different styles and experience here. Thanks again for the great welcome!
  17. I guess I'm very lucky. A gentleman at my church started Martial Arts classes a little over three years ago. He is a 9th degree black belt in Hon-Shin-Do. He has also studied many other styles. He has never charged us a dime and has said that as long as he has students coming he'll continue to teach. We never pay for testing but he will not test us until he thinks we are ready. He buys our belts and certificates and presents them to us at promotion. "You earn your belts" he tells us. He has studied under Master John Pachivas and Master Trias. He has also studied under Ken Ogawa from Japan. I and my son feel very fortunate to have the opprotunity to learn Martial Arts from this man. He gives so much and asks for so little!
  18. Hi, I'm 37. My wife thought it would be a good idea for me and my then 15 yr. old son to take Karate together. A gentleman at our church was starting a class at no cost. He has 37 years experience so I reluctently agreed. I thought it would be good for our son. Now we are both purple belts and have been at for a little over 3 yrs. and I wouldn't give it up for the world. Stick with it, it only gets better!
  19. A very nice forum! I study the art of Hon-Shin-Do. Based on the traditional teachings of Okinawan Shorie Ryu. I study at the U.S. Christian Academy of Martial Arts in Newnan Georgia. I've achieved the rank of purple belt. Nice to be here, looking forward to talking with everyone.
  20. Hello, I'm a purple belt in the style of Hon-Shin-Do Karate. Brown is my next goal.
  21. I've been studying the art of Karate for some time now, and have never been put into a position where I had to use it. I credit my trianing with this as well. My Hanshi has used the saying from a story, "If your hand goes forth withhold your temper" "If your temper goes forth withhold your hand". All techniques in Karate start with a block(defense) and never a strike(offense). If you do start to train in the Art of Karate be sure to find a good dojo that not only teaches you the Art but the Morality and Responsibilty that comes with it.
