I sometimes have the very same feelings as you alanseijas. With working an evening shift and training on the two nights I am off I'm always somewhere in the evening other than home with the wife and kids. I have felt guilty in the pass and have even e-mailed my Hanshi to tell him that I was sorry for missing class "but I felt like I need to be at home tonight". I guess I feel guilty when I miss class as well. He is very understanding and always puts family first. My kids (18 and 8 yr. olds) are great and try to be involved in there lives. My 18 year old trains with me, even though at his age school and girlfriend sometimes come first. My wife leaves for her work early in he morning so I'm up to get my young one off to school on the bus and I do spend time with him on the weekends before I have to go to work. Getting home late and up early (4-5 hrs. sleep) wears me down sometimes but it all seems to work in the end. Sounds like you're a great Dad alanseijas, who is involved and dedicated to your kids. I think this world could us more of that. Even though my 18 yr. old thinks my wife and I are dumb as rocks and just wants us to leave him alone to do what he wants. But thats a whole other subject!! Another day in the week would be great but I don't think that's going to happen, so we just have to make the best of the time we have and hope it's enough!

Wow, that's a tough schedule you have kataman. I'm not a bus driver but I do work for a transportation business, an airline to be exact. I think your schedule is a little harder than mine with the split shifts and all. I don't know how you keep up with it. I do agree with what you say about it making you a better martial artist. "Where the heart is willing it will find a thousand ways, but where it is unwilling it will find a thousands excuses." -unknown. Very good points Kempo, that bothers me as well. If you are going to train then train. And as our Hanshi says, there are no stupid questions. He loves it when we question a technique. It shows that we are listening and thinking. He also gladly shows us a technique if we wonder if it will work or not.

I understand where you're coming from Shotochem. My wife works a regular job with regular day time hours so we're like two ships that pass in the night. The two nights a week I could be home at night, I'm at karate class. It's tough sometimes but luckily she understands I love training very much. Bribery does help as well too! We have two kids and ones trains with me so thats great. Thanks for your responding everyone!

Do any of you have anything that gets in the way of your training? I work a evening shift and every six months we bid for the days off and shift we want. We train on Monday, Tuesday and Thrusday so I always try to get Mon. & Tues. off. Usually those days are pretty easy to get since most people like to have other days off. Until this past bid we went through. I was only able to get a Tues. Wed. off. We are allowed to swap days with other people who are willing to switch so I was campaigning every week for someone to trade with. What a pain! The good news is we've just completed our current bid that goes into effect Oct. 19 so not too much more begging I'll have to do! Thank God! Sorry to run long. Just wondering if there were others out there who had things that sometimes got in the way of training?

We do Naihanchi and it has no mai geri's. As Jussi has said, it contains only sweeps and stomping movements.

Is it safer in the Dojo???
gheinisch replied to shotochem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I do have my share of accidents around the home but not to that extent. I might want to consider wearing one of those red man suits while doing yard work. Be careful, the home can be a dangerous place. I think satistics show that most people suffer injuries at home more than any where else. -

Hello! Glad to have you!

It sounds like you are in an enviroment of verbal abuse and intimidation which is not good. It's Ok to be stern and forceful with commands and corrections but when it's constant and directed mostly at you is when its a problem. This can create a place where you are supose to learn and grow into a place of fear. One should never be afraid or intimidated from asking questions. How else are you supposed to learn? Is he like this when you have regular conversations with him or only during class? Do you think he is singling you out or does it just seem that way? Our Hanshi tells us that we can talk to him about anything, karate related are not. We are in a family that should help each other, not instill fear. IMHO

My Hanshi is a 9th dan who has been in the martial arts for close to 38 years. He will never be a 10th dan because his Sensei (John Pachivas) passed away on valentines day 2000. Hanshi John Pachivas would be the only one that could promote him to 10th dan. I don't think he will ever award that rank to himself, after all as our Hanshi says "ranks are earned, never given".

Welcome to the forums!

As kempo said, don't rush through your katas. Proper technique and breathing is more important than speed for now. It might sound funny but try not to think too much, your body already knows what to do, so just let it. Relax and enjoy what you are doing. Good Luck!

Welcome! Look forward to your posts.

Our Hanshi will not promote anyone to the rank of shodan under the age of 18.

I'll be checking the game out. Shouldn't be to hard to spot your "little" brother. I hope he has a great game!
