It's all good advise you have received so far, the only thing I can add is to practice using the natural spring that God gave you in your ankles, your achilles tendon. Learn to spring quickly in all directions but especially forward, it's great for closing distances on an opponent in sparring and using a quick technique.

Martial Arts as a whole...
gheinisch replied to sansoouser's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
For me all the things you mentioned I have experienced and I continue to grow in many of those areas. One thing you didn't mention is the extended family you gain in the dojo, I consider everyone from Hanshi to the newest white belt in class a more then just a freind and I know that if I ever needed anything they would be there for me. I guess that's been the most important part for me. I've been training for a little over four years. Respectfully Yours, Greg -
Some funny comics from Mark Parisi. http://www.offthemark.com/faves/favorites.htm Check out the other favorite links at the bottom. Some of this are great!

Nice reply Red J, I should have said milli-seconds instead. Our Hanshi often talks to us about how your reaction is based on a fraction of a second and NOT seconds. The pause of a second to think about what you are going to do may be to late. Our Hanshi has a Japanese saying for that Hon Noi (Sp?), reacting without thinking. I think that's right, correct me if I'm wrong.

Welcome Pepparoo, I'm glad you found what you were looking for. Glad to have you here on the forums. -
I agree on the reacting without thinking stance. When attacked you may have only seconds to react if your lucky, any hesiatation may be your last. We do a drill in class where students line up on either side to make a gaunlet and you have to walk down the middle of it. The students will grab you in different ways using different techniques and you have to counter as soon as you are attacked. Some of the students won't grab you or two may grab you at once. It's a good exercise to keep you on your toes! IMHO

Yamato Sakura Brand Belt
gheinisch replied to Pacificshore's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I would e-mail or call them and see if the belts have to be embroidered, it may only be an free option you can choose if you want too. You may be able to order one without being embroidered. Good Luck in your efforts! -
Yeah Johnny, Bas has been pretty sucessful with MMA competitions. They have a highlight film of him and other fighters at sherdog.com if you want to check him out. He has awesome open hand strikes. I like his quote, you should always keep everything you do in perspective.

Some suppliers do make adult gi's with elastic waistbands. I know Century has them and I'm sure some of the others do as well. I've gone with a middle weight gi with a 3" elastic waistband and it's great. No more worries here. Good luck!

I'm with karatekid, I know it as a kip-up. Don't know any other names for it.

Sweat pants and a t-shirtwill work just fine. Tell him to wear sandles or be sure to take any socks off before class. Very hard to hold a stance in socks.

I've been training a little over three years and have just earned my brown (3rd kyu). It will probably be another couple of years before I'll be ready for black.

Bill "Superfoot" Wallace!
gheinisch replied to monkeygirl's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Never meet the man but my Hanshi trained with him some back in the good ole' days. Hanshi has only praise for him and says he has the most devastating left kick he has ever seen. That was his bread and butter and he used it too perfection. He said he once saw him kick an opponent out of the ring with a single kick. Didn't call him "super foot" for nothing. It's great that you got to spend some time with someone with the didication and desire for the art as he has. -
Welcome, glad your here!

We learn Animal Hand Forms in my style even though they are not predominately used. We must know the form and use of Leopard, Tiger, Crane, Snake and Dragon fist.
