  1. Welcome, great to have you here!
  2. Hello and Welcome to the forum!
  3. Oh well, my team didn't win but what a great game. Fun and a good time was had by all.
  4. Yeah, I guess it's really about all the the good food and getting together with friends. We're having a get together at our house. The menu is wings (BBQ & Hot), Meatballs, chicken skewers, lasagna and Nachos. I hope everyone has a good time!
  5. OK, tomorrow is the big game. Does anyone have a favorite team their rooting for? I'm from down South so I be pulling for the Panthers. I normally would be at work tomorrow but I asked for the day off about a month ago because it is also our wedding anniversary, didn't even think about the game being on the same day. What luck, two birds with one stone on that one. Been married twelve years in case anyone was wondering. Six Happily! Just kidding, they have all been Great!!! We are having a Super Bowl Party so got to give her credit for that one. So who is everyones favorite? Lets keep it nice, and show good sportsmanship. My Falcons were a flop this year but what until next year! That seems to be our battle cry down here. Hope your team wins!
  6. Ok everyone, let's try to voice our opinions without being critical of teaching styles, organizations or personnel attacks. Everyone is allowed an opinion as everyone is allowed to disagree. Keep it civil.
  7. Send $10 money order to START the application process. Have to be very careful of the something for nothing scams.
  8. Our Hanshi will only accept students who are 12 or older unless they have some experience then he may take them as students on a case by case basis. He will not promote anyone to Shodan until they are at least 18. That's how we do it.
  9. Here's a link with some info on the five animal forms. Hope this helps some. http://www.shaolin.com.au/animal.html
  10. I've heard of it and have seen it the Discovery channel special but thats about it. There has been some questions about the head of the organization Sacharnoski. His credentials may be in question. I don't know, read for yourself and make your own conclusion. I'm sure the art has some very good aspects to it but I'm Shotochem, I'm not going to stand there and take a ridgehand to the throat or a kick to the groin. http://www.e-budokai.com/jukokai/sacharnoski.htm
  11. Here is a little I found about Oyama and Nichiren. Apparently a Korean gentleman named So Nei-Chu turned Oyama torwards the Nichiren sect. Maybe some others here know more. Hope this helps some. So Nei-Chu - The GoJu teacher that helped put Mas Oyama on the path that lead to Kyokushin, said of So Nei-Chu, "When I was driven almost to self-ruin, Mr. So Nei-Chu, an elder of my native province, rescued me from the crisis. Mr. So, a thinker and master of karate, was a rare man of character and confidence. Moreover, he was a devotee of the Nichiren Sect. He preached to me that martial arts and religion are inseparably united and taught me the scripture of his sect. When I was at my wits' end as to what to do and went to see him, Mr. So, after encouraging me, said, 'You had better withdraw from the world. Seek solace in nature. Retreat to some lone mountain hide out to train your mind and body. In three years you will gain something immeasurable. As the proverb goes, "Temper the heated iron before it gets cold, so train yourself in self discipline before you grow older if you wish to be a great man."' When I heard Mr. So's advice, I felt as if I had been awakened and I suddenly understood the path to take. The Oriental Confucian maxim is: 'First train one's self, manage a household, and then reign of over a country.' It is essential to train one's self if one wants to administer the affairs of state wealth. To Mr. So, I shall forever be grateful for his advice and instruction which made me what I am as a karate master. I made up my mind to concentrate on the difficult road ahead. I reviewed all the futile actions I had taken in the past and decided, as advised by Mr. So, to isolate myself at Mt. Kiyozumi in Chiba Prefecture." So it is that we touch those in our lives without the slightest ideal of what greatness can come from the right word at the right time.
  12. Now that's funny!
  13. Hello and Welcome to the boards.
  14. Welcome to the forums!
  15. Welcome to KF.
  16. I've been at it for 4 yrs now and I'm at 3rd kyu, so I'm looking at 5 or 6 yrs to Shodan.
  17. Welcome to the forums Matt. What style did you get your black belt in? Not to take anything away from you but 10 yrs old seems awful young to achieve black belt. It's great that you are starting back your training. Will you be going back to a Dojo for your training? Thanks for coming to check out the boards. There is a lot of knowledge here to tap into, feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  18. Welcome!
  19. It's a fairly complex question you ask with lots of opinions. Here is a little oof the site 24fightingchickens. "On Okinawa, there are several styles, but the best known are Goju-Ryu, Shorin-Ryu, and Isshin-Ryu. Goju-Ryu on Okinawa is very much like the Japanese namesake. Shorin-Ryu, which comes in three flavors including Matsubayashi, Shobayashi, and Kobayashi, is the style most like Shotokan. Isshin-Ryu and Uechi-Ryu are Okinawan styles that are similar to Goju-Ryu in many respects, but emphasize a vertical punch and open-handed techniques respectively." This link compares several styles and gives a little history. You may want to check it out. http://www.24fightingchickens.com/101/02_karate.html
  20. Hello and welcome!
  21. Welcome, enjoy your stay!
  22. Best wishes! I've been there and done that so I know how you are feeling. It all will turn out great. Try not to worry too much. Chances are that everyone around yoy are having some of the same feelings.
  23. If you feel it's the right time to start another Martial Art than go for it. Cross training is great and can be very beneficial especially if the style you train is may be weak in a certain area. With that said, you say you have been training for only a year. I've been training for four years and feel like there is so much knowledge in my style yet to be learned. Ask your Sensei what you can expect down the road in your style, it may be your style has some of the things you're wanting to learn elsewhere. My style incorporates some of the animal forms but they weren't introduced to us until a couple of years into training. Don't rush to learn, practice what you know to perfection. As our Hanshi says, "I would rather you have a few techniques perfected that work, than to be familiar with 10,000 that don't." Be sure it's for the right reasons, you may want to give your style a little more time. IMHO Hope this helps! Good luck in your decision.
  24. Ok, I just purchased a Martial Arts Book on Ebay and ran across this link about getting your your black belt in the comfort of your home for a mere $4,000.00. They even say you get tested for your belts. Not sure how that takes place. No risk money back guaranteed too! I sorry but I have to be very skeptical of an offer like this. The link isn't working. If you want to take a look just type in Black Belt Study in the ebay search. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3652813745&category=47348
  25. Everyone has explained it fairly well. Basically some schools forget about the art they should be teaching and more about the bottom line (money). Some may say belts are sometimes bought and not earned in some circumstances.
