  1. Mikeod At the last comp. I went to Korean, Japanese and Chinese competed against each other. The Korean practitioners wielded both a short staff and kama. Check out AshleyBeck.com and ask him. I'm sure he'll be pleased to answer your questions (He's a 4th Dan in TKD, and practices Capoerra for his musical forms) Oh yeah, I'm sure IAMRUSHMAN has something to say. Hes the TKD man. C ya
  2. Most martial arts are named to be a way of life eg. Shotokan Karate-do, Okinawan Kobu-do, Kyudo etc.. These are in contrast to the war arts - Karat-jitsu, Ninjitsu, Jiu-jitsu Its quite simple really
  3. Moobrack After our dan grading I will show you the first basic moves from hojo-undo 1 and 2, which are strikes and catches. Just drill those moves, and remember to use both left and right sides. C ya
  4. Hi all I spoke to Shihan O'Conner, and he says that there was a man called Shushi. Just checking my books again.....DAMN, I misread the kata names. There are so many bo katas that sound the same
  5. Hi all I believe the stuff is called Potassium Pamanganate. (I aint sure of the spelling). Its a hardening agent. Hee hee, I'm so smart C ya
  6. In many martial arts, the black belt is just another belt. Its only recently become special. But I dont really know what to think about this topic. There ar plently of people ready for black belt after 3 years of training, whilst some others just dont have the abliity. To me, black belt is just the start of someones martial arts life. Remember - Karate-Do - the way of karate C ya
  7. Oh course, I forgot about him. Hes only my examiner
  8. Thanks Goose. I didn't realise I'll check them out. C ya
  9. Interesting I dont know many Okinawan Kobudo instructors around, only a man called Brian Ford, and doesn't live in leeds. It could be true though. C ya
  10. Hey Moobrack Which friend was this? Do I know him? C ya
  11. Most kobudo katas are names after the person who created them eg. the sai kata Matsumura-no-Zai. However, Shu-shi-no-kon weas created by Master Chinen, not Master Shu-Shi. I think Tae did kobudo, but shes gone now Oh well
  12. yeah, he died because of the aspirin. A Tai-Chi practitioner once told me that his ying and yang were out of sink. He said that Lee practiced too much hard and not enough soft. Apparantly, acording to the practitioner, thats how he died. But I dont believe it. C ya
  13. The Engish Karate Governing Body's time is 33 months, and so is British NAtional Martial Arts Associations's. I suppose it depends on your style as to what is expected. C ya
  14. I know that you can buy the magazine from Borders in Leeds town centre, but I bought it from my local newsagent. The reason most people don't stock it is because its not a very good magazine, with some funny columnists (main article - can women fight?). yes Chris, I'll bring it in when I see you. C ya
  15. Blade Sorry, if I offended you. It was all in good heart I've been doing Shotokan Karate for a while now (11 years:)), and if you want to learn a street combat martial art dont take up Shotokan Karate. Shotokan bases its whole design on the "one-hit" system that will finish a fight. As many of the guys will probably tell me (eg. TBKen), a fight doesn't end with a gyaku-zuki (reverse punch) But, if you want to learn a traditional art with great katas (forms) and improve key life skills, both mentally and physically, then take up Shotokan. HOpe this helps. If you have any questions, just email me. I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. C ya
  16. Hi all This is probably a long shot but... Does anybody know what the kobudo kata Shu-shi-no-kon means. Obviously "no-kon" means that the kata uses the staff, but I dont know what the first bit means. I know, I know, I should know C ya
  17. BlueDragon is right, try to stick with one martial art than jumping around with a few others. If I wanted to be stupid, I would train in Shotokan Karate, Okinawan Kobudo, Ninjutsu, Iaido, Karate-jutsu, Capoerra (sp?), Jui-jitsu, Tai-chi, Shaolin-Tzu Kempo, Seven Stars Praying Mantis Kung Fu.......And the list goes on. But the bottom line is......I dont want to learn all these martial arts. I dont mean that I dont believe in cross-training (it's important), but its better to be good in one martial art than crap in several. Its this is confusing for anyone, just read BlueDragons post again (I think I babble). I've just said the same thing as him C ya
  18. Hi all Just for your info, the UK Combat Magazine has a martial arts encyclopaedia on CD rom free with the September issue. Its quite good, but the price is the best thing C ya
  19. Hey Angie You dont wanna get on the wrong side of Bill. Hes one of the good guys C ya
  20. Well said Karateka. Respect is the issue. C ya
  21. Hi Sorry, but even though Wado-Ryu is from Japan, it isn't hard and linear. It was developed by a student of Funakoshi, as he also trained in Jiu-Jitsu. He molded the two together and BOOM!!! Wado-Ryu I'd say Wado-Ryu is quite soft. C ya
  22. I think everyone knows what I'm gunna say about that, so I wont bother saying anything, as TBKen will respond the say as last time C ya
  23. Hey Kickbutt Is your school part of the United Profesionals? My school recently joined UP, and our creed is very similar to yours C ya
  24. Hi all JUst a point to make...the nunchaku has a longer reach than the bo. Something I often tell my kobudo students C ya
  25. Moobrack As far as I know, it is illegal to use any weapon in public (eg street). When carrying weapons they have to be concealed, for example in a carry-case. I'm not sure about the rules about bein attacked, but I have known of martial artists to win a fight with a weapon, only later to be charged. C ya
