  1. Ronryu Hello I study Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo. I am a member of the IOKA, and out Saiko-Shihan is Mikio Nishiuchi. We study: Rokushakubo (6ft staff) Nunchaku Sai Tsun-kuwa (tonfa) kama Iyeku (oar) ^In that order That is up to black belt level. There are several other weapons involved, including suru-chin, nunti, and many others. C ya
  2. For all you karate practitioners out there I'm just interested to what people have to say about the kata Jitte (AKA Jutte). I know several different theories behind this, and how it got its name, but I am interested in what other people know abut this kata. I post what I know later, just to see what other people think. C ya
  3. Hi all (but I think this post is mainly aimed at SaiFightsMS ) As many of you know, I train in the art of Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo. I am at the stage now of advanced use of the Sai (7th-5th Kyu). There is a kata called San-cho-zai. As the more terminology-wise practictioners, this means "3 sai kata". I want to know if anyone knows of any places that will ship sai in threes, and not just in pairs. I've looked all over, but I cant find a thing. If anybody's wondering, in the kata you throw one sai, then pull out the other from behind your belt, then later in the kata you throw it again. C ya
  4. Piastre For us Shotokan practitioners, your Pinan Nidan comes before Pinan Shodan. I think I'm saying this so ppl can understand, but I'll just check... Heian Shodan contains a Otoshi-tettsui-uchi as the 3rd move, whilst Heian Nidan contains the Ude Soete/Haiwan Uke combinations. I believe that this is the other way round for the Pinans. Cya
  5. No Joanne, none of us are going. I think we have our own Summer Camp coming up. C ya
  6. In my school all students learn the same katas up to advanced level (heian, tekki shodan, bassai-dai) Godan proves to be the most difficult basic kata for adults - it is the first kata to contain a jump. C ya
  7. [CT] Not all of us martial artists do MA for street combat situations. Some techniques or exercises are done just to improve ourselves, and our bodies for no apparant reason. SOunds funny I know. But remember when that bloke climbed Everest (I should remember his name, but I cant ATM). When asked why he did it, he simply responded "Because it was there" C ya
  8. I had heard of the kata Matayoshi-no-nunti. It was made by Matayoshi Sensei, the ex-head of my style Tsuken is an island somewhere near okinawa. There is a bo kata called Tsuken-no-kon. I think they may be the same kata, as some nunti kata are just bo kata. C ya
  9. I practice Gankaku, and I do it in a straight line. I didn't know that there were several ways to do it. Oh well......thanks for the info
  10. Sai I have never actually seen a chizikunbo, only in books. They are basically knuckle dusters, but are held on the inside of your hand Oh wait....I think they can be held on either the outside or inside.....oh I dont know.....I just know they're about 4'' long Hope this helps Oh Jiggy, I do recommend getting a book called "techniques of self-defense Stick Fighting" by Masaaki hatsumi and Quintin Chambers. The book is all based on self-defense using different sizes of sticks. Hope this helps (I like that saying) Tobias
  11. I found some nunti-bo, and found that the price is generally around £150. Yeah, my kobudo instructor will probably know
  12. Sai: All the videos are superb - the katas are flmed very well, with plenty of slow and fast bits!!! The hojundo are clearly sort out - HOWEVER - my examiner is a direct student of Nishiuchi Sensei (the man who does the video), so my syllabus is exactly the same. Jiggy : I recommend Nishuchi Sensei videos on bo. Start with Volume one and work onto volume 2. The videos cover all parts of the IOKA syllabus, so if u wanna grade, contact the organisation, and I'm sure they will be pleased to help. Oh, and if anyones interested, the IOKA only hasa pprox. 350 members worldwide. I wondered why my examiner was pleased when I said I had 6 students who want to join!!!!!LOL Oh and Jiggy, BECAREFUL.....I purchased Fumio Demuras books (all of them). They are useful, and are very good books, but they are based around Japanese Bo-jutsu, not Matayoshi Kobudo. Its kinda like buying a book on Wado-Ryu if you practice Shotokan. Hope this helps Tobias
  13. Sai On Age Of Empires 2, on the skirmishes just build knights, english bowmen and trebuchets. It works against the comp., but not against other ppl (ppl aren't that dumb!!)
  14. Hey, looks like AikidoKa has been studying some sociology, just like me!!!! But in seriousness.....I do write poetry (but doesn't everyone). I think it does help my training, and it makes me a better person (somehow) C ya
  15. Yeah, I am jumping at the chance!!! My dad popped into the local MA shop and the guy there had never heard of a Nunti-bo. Must be pretty rare if he'd never heard of them!!! C ya
  16. I am getting Nishiuchi Sensei videos tomorrow. He bo Vol. 2 has Cho-un, and Sakagawa. I look forward to this life-savers (I need them for my grading!!!) C ya
  17. Has anyone heard of this weapon, or even better used it? I know its basically a bo with a manji-sai stuck on the end, but I have found out that they are very hard to buy (well, u have to pay ridiculous amounts for handmade ones!!!) My examiner asked me through the net if I would like to learn a few moves, well... I jumped at the chance, considering its a very rare weapons. Now I'll just get bak to chatting with my girlfriend.... C ya
  18. SOrry, that meant to say *japanese or okinawan WEAPON martial arts* Sorry
  19. Welcome MasterTae Have you ever studied any japanese or okinawan martial arts. Me and SaiFightsMS need another person to talk to C ya
  20. I like working with the bo. At the moment its the weapon I feel the 'safest' with. By that I mean I feel that I won't drop it in competition, or hit myself around the head with it!!! Shu-shi-no-kon is the only kata I know with the staff, and its won me two regional competitions (and I've only entered two, so thats got to be good!!!) I dont have a favourite hojoundo, but I like the kake-uke technique (hooking block) I think it can be quite effective if used properly. C ya
  21. Sorry ad, but Gail Porter is a 2nd dan in karate, not kungfu Keep on smiling, I know I will be C ya
  22. I've heard of Tang SOO Do. Is this similar???
  23. Ahh Silvio Simac - I've met him I dont know him personally, but I was given an impression of him when he did a 35 min video at an awards ceremony. BTW, The main idea behind the awards was to show students acheivements. But like I said - I've never met him personally, so i can't judge him C ya
  24. At my previous club, ALL junior students got tabs on their belts when they passed their grading. So it was 9th Kyu, 9th Kyu + 1, 8th Kyu, *the Kyu + 1 Oh, and they didn't believe in junior Dan grades, so they had 6 tabs for 1st Kyu. It was a bit mad. C ya
  25. I really enjoy working with the sai. Its actually the main weapon of my rank (7th Kyu) in Matayoshi Kobudo C ya
