  1. Yoda is correct...........kobudo is very much based on kata and pre-arranged drills - but isn't that what it means, "Ancient Martial Ways"
  2. Very nice-looking site, but seems to be the total opposite way of how my students and I practice
  3. Yoda Once again I didn't read the post properly LOL No I aint going down the M6, but once again thanks for the offer. Like I said I dont really need any ATM. Give them to someoene who would really like them - hey, maybe a present for your girlfriend, or something...LOL Once again thanks for the offer (repeat ) Tobias
  4. Yoda Thanks for the offer, but I'm off to Seni this weekend for some fancy weapons....so I dont really have the funds ATM Money is a bit tight for me - good job I dont have to pay bills LOL Cheers anyway Tobias
  5. This is a complicated issue, which is different in many associations. 'We' recently graded a man going for his 3rd dan in Freestyle Shukokai (yes, a new modern deviation from kickboxing/karate) There were no 6th dans on the panel, but the association specify that to grade a person up to 3rd dan there must be a 10dan panel. The panel for that particular grading was a 4th dan kickboxer, 3rd dan karate (and head of an association), 2nd dan karate, another 3rd dan karate. I believe that adds up to 12..... But generally, yes, it should be three grades higher
  6. Kyle Many styles of karate don't practise kata. This is purely because the instructors have thought that kata is 'useless'. It's quite funny really - my instructor and I went to teach a seminar in Surrey a few weeks ago. They didn't practise kata, or bow, or yoi, or do ippon kihon kumite......the list goes on....... So in conclusion, many 'new', or 'modern' styles of karate dont practise kata. I can't think of a 'true', or 'traditional' style that doesn't practise kata, but i could be wrong - AnonOne help me out here!!!!! Cya
  7. hm....my 'collection' 1 rokushakubo 1 engraved rokushaku bo 1 jo 1 hanbo 1 pair of zai 1 pair of gama 1 pair of tsun-kuwa 2 pairs of hexangonal wood cord nunckaku 1 pair of wood chain nunchaku 1 pair of foam nunchaku All these weapons aren't really a collection, just required for my level in Okinawan kobudo. When I get more money (hee hee, a new job is on thecards!!!), I shall really start collecting. I'm after a nunti-bo and a pair of manji-sai, and a kuwa. Cya
  8. Hey all The other day in class a question aroused about Heian Yondan (I wont bore you with the details on how it came about) The people practicing it were ending one-to-two steps behind there they started. I had thought about this before, but recently I read somewhere that in Yondan you should finsih 2 steps behind, but in Godan you finish 2 steps in front (therefore if u perform them together you end up in the place where you started) This is causing some problems in our dojo, so I was just wondering if anyone can shed any light upon it Cheers

Tobias
  10. Angus I wish you all the best in all that you do. When you give ure next ass-kicking to some snobbish black belt, give him a roundhouse kick for me C ya Tobias
  11. Ai Hate First, welcome to the boards. However, we do pratice this in Shotokan karate. We do not have the katas sanchin and tensho, but we do have a tension stance and tension kata, Hangetsu (which I believe is derived from Sanchin). Breathing and muscle control is very VERY important is all forms of karate. Hope this helps, and I'm sure we can discuss more of this further with the other members on the board. Cya Tobias
  12. I was at 6th Form but I left due to complications.... I am now working for Leeds City Council as an admin assistant - but I'll have a more powerful job soon. The power of qualifications and experience!!!!!!!!!
  13. Yup, Steve, you did exhaust us!!!!! But I got a second dan at the end of it!LOL
  14. Bitseach I too study Shotokan karate. At first I tried to learn weapons from Fumio Demura, but then I was introduced to a man called Albie O'Connor. He is an examiner is Okinawan Kobudo, and lives in Essex. If you were to take up Okinawan Kobudo, you would have to get used to the differences between Japanese (shotokan) and Okinawan martial arts (shorter stances etc.), but you should have no trouble Check out his website at http://www.martialarts2000.freeserve.co.uk He is a very nice man and will be happy to answer any of your questions. I notice that you are from London, so that is quite near to where he lives. If you have any problems but do not wish to contact O'connor sensei, talk to me. But if you do want to talk to him, tell him Tobias sent you Hope this helps Tobias
  15. I only know one tonfa kata - Tsun Kuwa Kata Ichi I believe it was a kata designed by Matayoshi for the syllabus up to black belt
  16. YODA - I take my hat off to you. A well written post full of truth. Good job man
  17. This may be a bit different, but ****TE means under the arm - we use the techniques in several different ways in Kobudo I dont know if this is the same though Tobias
  18. Yup I do know Spooky Dog. Mr King - feel free, I'm game for anything LOL
  19. Its quite funny really - I really need moves that can be 'reversed' (eg. basic hammerlocks, arm ringers etc.) My name? HMMMMM.....I dunno - thats a long way off yet Oh, and yes wrestlers do moves, that just pull them off so they dont do maximum damage, just look good to an audience C ya
  20. Hi all This is bound to get a few laughs - and a few chants of "Wuss" and "Fake" Ok - are we ready....... I recently took up professional wrestling - yup, the thing you see on TV with the men in spandex throwing each other around and sweating. Anyway - I was just wondering if there are any net resources for basic submission holds. You know, things like full-nelsons and cross armbars. I know that the best idea would really be to join a Judo/Ju-jitsu school and learn the real way, but I dont really have the time. Anyway - feel free to laugh And one last thing GGGRRRRRR - Feel the wrath of my suplex!!!! Tobias
  21. A welcome to Steve King, a good friend of mine. Hope you are well.....and I'll see you at the next competition Tobias
  22. I think we are all getting mixed up here. Pro wrestling is FIXED, but that doesn't mean its not REAL. You have to be one tough cookie to 'fight' in a wrestling ring - its not all about the money. Bones are broken, muscles are torn. If you have any questions drop a line to Drew McDonald at highlanderdrew@hotmail.com I'm sure he'd be happy to respond to your comments about wrestling being 'fake'
  23. Talking about Karate Ni Sen te Nashi.... I was teaching Kobudo to a 2nd dan in TKD (I cant remember which association, but I think it was the more sparring orientated one), when I said "Just step back into a guard position to get ready. Its a bit like karate wher there is no first attack" At which point the instructor said "Pardon" I repeated myself.....and repeated myself again...and again He stood there bemused, then said : "Oh well, in our style we believe to attack first. I thought thats how every martial art worked." I'm sure this is just his style, KickChick. Am I right? Now I know that someone is probably gunna post - "First attack is right BLAH BLAH BLAH Karate Ni Sen Te Nashi is stupid BLAH BLAH BLAH" But anyway - I'm off C ya Tobias
  24. "By all means correct me if I'm wrong" Finally, someone with some humility!!!!! A warm welcome to the boards ZakariRu!!!! I think you and I are gunna hit it off well
  25. Sorry, but Shimpo Matayoshi died in 1998. He was the son of the founder of my martial art, Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo However, one of the students of Shimpo Matayoshi is alive - a man called Mikio Nishiuchi. And then, my kobudo instructor is a student of Mikio Nishiuchi. Check out Albie O'Connor's (my instructor) website - http://www.martialarts2000.freeserve.co.uk Alternatively, check out http://209.238.212.54/IOKA/ Hope this helps Tobias
