My examiner also believes that the nunchaku shouldn't be swung around the neck or crotch. The main advantage of nunchaku is there reach and power. Its the same idea about where to hold the nunchaku - do you go for flashiness, or effectiveness? C ya

TKD vs Karate
Tobias_Reece replied to TKD_McGee's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Moobrack is correct If you want to learn more about karate, feel free to email me - I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have Hope this helps Tobias -
Karateka Thankyo I was juts intrigued, because I thought you practiced shotokan, but I know that Kushanku Dai is a not a Shotokan kata - its called Kanku-Dai C ya
-
Karateka May I ask what stlye of karate you pratice? C ya
-
SaiFightsMS I aint quite sure what kata the IOKA teaches, because syllabus wise I aint using the kama yet (I still got tonfa to go ) I'll check up for you C ya
-
Ok I'll have to check with the boss first - but that should be ok. Tekki Sandan it is - we'll start in a few weeks time. C ya

But, going back to the original topic.....a little tip from me. When you score a point, dont immediately stop and drop your guard. Often the opponent counters, and the referee just doesn't "happen to see" your technique, either through biasness or crapness. I'v seen it happen plenty of times, and thats generally how top-level fighters get knocked out in the opening rounds. C ya Once again - no offence meant to you WinterKarate
-
Why, its Radio 1 of course.

WinterKarate Gichin Funikoshi didn't believe in sparring (notice I say sparring, not fighting). John Van Weedan only believe that sparring should be left to black belts an above. Shotokan isn't a sparring style - why do you think we do everything in deep stances Shotokan bases its combat on the "one-hit ends the fight" idea. This doesn't sound very much like sparring, now does it? But if you want to do sparring thats fine - just don't complain when you fail your grading (thats another point - why dont you have to spar for grading?) It may be better for you to join a more rounded club such as Andy Cusik - he's a good fighter. I would teach sparring, but all the way up to 1st Kyu I didn't spar once (and our chief instructor was a kickboxing champion - so he must have thought that karate wasn't about sparring) It was friendly advice Steven, its just that if you prefer fighting then maybe you should go somewhere where you can be taught it properly. Its works both ways - go and ask certain black belts to perform Heian Shodan and they'll look at you stupid. I dont wanna lose our friendship over it Steven C ya

Ah Tekki Sandan - the best of the Tekkis. Looks good in a competition if you can get the horse stance sorted out. C ya

SaiFightMS What syllabus do you follow? Is your school members of the International Okinawan Kobudo Association? Just wondering, because you say that you sometimes practice hojo-undo, but in the IOKA syllabus hojo-undo are the grading programmes. Just want to know C ya
-
I was taught Sai hojo-undo No.1 for my grading , and sensei also thought that it would be good if I learnt Ni-cho zai (but I forgot it:() SaiFights - did you teach ureself the katas, or did someone teach you them? C ya
-
I've always been a firm believer that if you start a new style of a martial art, then you start back at white belt. I hold a Nidan in Shotokan Karate, but if I started Goju-ryu, I would expect to start as a white belt again
-
Sorry SaiFightsMS, I juts made the assuption that you were a guy. Oops, my mistake C ya
-
Welcome to SaifightsMS. Glad to meet another man who enjoys the bo and sai Oh yeah - thanks for the ni-cho zai info. C ya

I once used to stick my tongue out I also used to pull funny faces when putting lots of effort into my kata. It happens. All the instructors are doing is trying to improve your performance c ya

Judo vs Aikido
Tobias_Reece replied to TKD_McGee's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think you're made a little mistake. You should be comparing Judo and Ju-jitsu. Remember....judo is really the competitive form of ju-jitsu Keep on asking C ya -
Evasion, take the spark outta their eyes...
Tobias_Reece replied to Angus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
There is a French martial art called Savate, which is quite similar to kickboxing, except that the defense is ducking and diving, not blocking. I've only seen it in action on videos, and it looks quite funny ) -
Music is good for warm-ups. It helps every1 keep the beat, and to move to it However, music is not good for MA training. People start to sacrifice technique and skill just to keep in time. C ya

should young kids do a martial art?
Tobias_Reece replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
3 is way too young to start martial arts, even if they go to a special kiddies class. When I started, the rules were you had to know your left and right, so the starting age was about 6. C ya -
easy find £5, go to a martial arts store and buy a pair. Hope this helps C ya BTW in case you havn't noticed, I dont advise making a pair of nunchaku. Buy them - its safer
