Joanne I know EXACTLY who you are talking about - shes one of mine It gets me as well...she uses very little tactics and juts runs straight in, thinking it will work every time. She got chucked off our sparring team for this, and she couldn't understand why!!! And for anyone whos interested, she lost her semi-final match because she got annoyed, lost control, and ran in - three times in a row!! You have to laugh at these people C ya

Most difficult kata - to learn or to perform well
Tobias_Reece replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Karate
At the moment, I teach Tekki Sandan as our club kata. I think its the best out of all the Tekkis, and yes, it does have complicated hand movements - "together, no wait, apart, twist, no wait...." C ya -
Moobrack I'm getting a bit confused....to me, any technique can be a martial arts technique. A quick uppercut is called a "ura-zuki" traditionally. A cross is called a "mawashi-zuki". Besides, western boxing is a martial art just as much as karate is. I could be wrong. BTW PLEASE NOBODY TAKE OFFENCE FROM THIS POINT. There is too much offence being taken from posts. C ya

Joe I did not see this competition, but at my last competition, where I used a staff, I kiai-ed long and loud. Why? Well, I imagine what I am doing. The last kiai in Shu-shi-no-kon (a bo kata) is a thrust to the throat. Therefore, a finishing move. I imagined I was really thrusting someone to the throat. However, when I practice Nunchaku Kata, the kiai-s are on jabs, which are not as powerful moves (well, they're powerful, but not really dynamic). I just utter a quick "EEEE" when doing these kiai-s. Hope this helps C ya

whats the choice?? Will he be teaching you them as a totally seperate MA eg. kobudo, or will he be teaching you intergrating it in your karate training? C ya

Bon I would like to apologise. I read the new rules for kumite and found that you can score points without actually touching the opponent, in areas such as the neck. To be truthful, thats a load of BS!!! How can you score a point without actually touching the opponent. And yes, its juts like a glorified game of tag. C ya

Are the tonfa covered with varnish? I was told that varnish on Nunchaku would make them slip - and on one occasion they did - OOOOPPPPPPSSSS!!!! I dunno, maybe varnish makes them sticky as well? Sorry that I cant help C ya

I understand you're point Joanne. However, if I was in any combat situation, I know I would rather put my Matayoshi Okinawan Nunchaku-justu training to the test. Call me a wimp, but I feel a long safer with some nunchaku in my hands. Oh, but I would rather use my karate skills instead of my sai-jutsu skilss. If you see what I mean I'm confusing myself. C ya

I also heard about these new rules, and they have been made so that there is a greater chance of karate becomingan olympic sport. Personally, I dont like them FROM A REFEREES POINT OF VIEW. I dont spar much, so I cant really say it from a sparers POV. The way I see it - if they want karate as an olympic sport, let them accept it as it is. Why do we all have to change the rules to be more user-friendly, and like the kickboxers? C ya

Bon I do not know of any point sparring where you get points for missing the target by up to half a metre. I, however, have only fought 1 or 1/2 point karate kumite. Please could you enlighten me on this form of point sparring. Thanks

At my previous club (when I was a youthful 6 year old) we started with Taikyoku Shodan. At my current club, we do the same kata, but call it Kihon Kata I' ve never learnt Taikyoku Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan or Rokudan C ya

Nunchaku traditional cord vs the chain
Tobias_Reece replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Hi all Before I start, I would like to say that I practice traditional Matayoshi Okinawan Kobudo, so my nunchakus should be string, cos of the tradition. But anyway........ I find chain harder to use because of the Ball bearings - they spin. I just prefer string, thats all C ya -
A quick welcome to Joanne. Shes a great girl and a great Karateka. Best Gankaku I've ever seen. C ya

Sai Yes, I know there are many different ways of doing katas. And yes, I have seen tens of different ways of doing Bassai-dai as well. Recently, at a competition I was refereeing, I saw a kid perform Hangetsu in Kiba-dachi. All the judges looked at each other, but we couldn't fail the kid because it was just a modification. Its so confusing C ya

Most clubs do Heian, Tekki Shodan, Bassai Dai. However, this order is generally pretty illogical. I think I remember reading that Funakoshi believed that all the Tekkis (shodan, nidan, sandan) should be learnt before Bassai C ya

SaiFights Sorry, I got mixed up. I thought the jump refered to the spinning jump in Kanku-sho, not the double kick. Funakoshi changed the name Rohai to Meiyko (sp?) I think, so if you do Shotokan, it should be called Meiyko. I could be wrong C ya

like hi........i hope you're nice peeps

Hey Heather Nice to see you're on the forums. Anthony - quiet you (you know what I mean) C ya -
SaiFights May I ask what style of karate you practice? In our style, Kanku-Dai contains no jump - it is Kanku-Sho that does. In Meikyo (Rohai) the jump doesn't really need to be particulary high - but sorry, no tips from me - I just do it (not very well I might add ) I dont really know what to say - just keep trying I suppose? C ya
