Kyudo? Iaido? Taichi? It's not all about fighting (at least in a "sparring" sense). WNM haha about the kyudo part. But some schools of Iaido and Tai Ji influence some sort or sparring. Like in Tai Ji they use push hands to determine who has more skill and better technique. And in Iaido a Sano Sensei of the yatsukaido dojo in Japan uses bokken to simulate a cutting exercise on a person. But I agree, its not all about sparring.

Chopsticks (hashi). Due to the fact that I eat with them at home and I eat out at Korean and Japanese restaurants ALOT Belt. If you have any question about it, Watch Fumio Demura's clips on youtube. And also shoelaces, but it may be a bit harder to unlace at any given time, but I carry an extra in my glove compartment and under my bed. a fist sized piece or petrified wood, that sits right next to my front door, on the inside of course haha.

GM Hae Man Park TKD Poomse Seminar
Ichi_Geki replied to Chuck's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I believe that is a great feat of Mr Park's personal character. Alot of koreans still hold a deep grudge against japanese people for the containment and killing of many koreans during the occupation of Korea by the Japanese, and that was very sincere of Mr Park to admit roots within Shotokan. -
Striking with elbows instead of fist
Ichi_Geki replied to GhostFighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
If you were planning on hitting to the throat...it would be more practical to use the knuckles, because you can extend 'through' the throat. But I agree with Kuma even past what he says. NO fight deserves deadly force. Instead you can shatter his ribs with an empi uchi (Swinging elbow strike). And most times if you bring an elbow straight down on a forearm, the fight is usually over anyways. Hit that nerve correctly, and he wont be using that arm for the rest of the day. -
The traditional Uechi Ryu Kara Te Do that I so dilligently practice is not really 'traditional' persay. Their are two Uechi Ryu traditonal styles. The traditional era after 1950 and the classical Uechi Ryu as taught by uechi kanbun

Self Defense vs Classroom Applications
Ichi_Geki replied to RichardZ's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Kata was my example. IF you train at anything you can make it effective. You just have to know what you are doing. I can point out a use and a practical use for anything in Kata and in kihon. And this is where my self defense curriculum comes from. And it is effective, I had to use it before myself. And if I may...you brought up traditional forms in your first post. Now for Kyushu Jutsu or Pressure points, They are effective if you train at them also...but if you learn one technique...and you think your able to beat someone off the street...your in it for all the wrong reasons and you shouldnt even be attempting to 'learn' -

I dont think its a tourist trap for that matter, I actually think its a great experience, and from what I hear most of the 'profit' goes to the maintaining of the budokan. Thats just what I hear. But I would go just to meet Sensei's I have yet to meet such as Iga Sensei.

Self Defense vs Classroom Applications
Ichi_Geki replied to RichardZ's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Hmmm I respect all those names of who you have listed, not because I follow everything they do, but because of their hard work and determination...but. The goal of lets say Kara Te Do. Is not to learn how to fight, it is to learn how to defend and stave. Striking can be easily done, but it takes skill to be able to defend completely. Our goal in Kara Te Do is to live a life that we do not have to use our techniques, so that we may live peacefully training, for the day we may need to use it. For this matter we never really know the true extent of our power. But for this we have tournaments and exhibitions. Even which most of us traditionalists do not attend because of the increasing sports like usage. If you spend your life perfecting something, it is going to work. If you train daily in bunkai you will see the techniques. Kata is not meant to fight with. kata is like opening up an encyclopedia or a dictionary and finding out what you want to know. Then you can figure out how to use it the way you want to from there. So many people look at kata and ask...how can that be used?...Well if you train long enough you will find out. If you want to learn to fight, you got it...punch, kick, punch, kick...any one can do this. But we are about dedication and preservation. We want to pass on what was once used, EFFECTIVELY. We just do not know how to make it effective anymore, and with that matter we all end up giving up, in a hopeless fury...BECAUSE we cannot FIGURE IT OUT. This is what you call the modern way of wanting things hot and ready, and not wanting to wait. Well I got news for you. Bas Rutten did not achieve his status over night. He trained many long hard years to get where he is. So what is the difference I ask...that his style is more physical than traditional Kara Te Do? That his is more flashier than Classical Kara Te Do. These are the exact reasons why people such as myself operate "machi dojo" private training halls where we choose who we wish to teach. So that we can guarantee that you have the mental conditioning of what it takes for out art. -
Feeling Comfortable: The weapon your friend carries
Ichi_Geki replied to joesteph's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
And if you do... then how in the world are you going to relate your experience to us? I didn't find that funny, having known others who have perished along these manners and simular. Lighten up my friend. in this life we live and die. To hold the death of someone you know this tight is to much. They would not want it so. I have had many people I love and cherish die, horrible deaths. Some in Iraq, and Afghanistan and some in civilian matters. But this is life. Honor them peacefully, by how and who they were. -
Aikido In Competition
Ichi_Geki replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Budo is everywhere. a teacher can influence is greatly. But they are not needed. A teacher can pass onto you only ten percent of the core of what you need to know. The rest comes from self. -

Budo comes from within, it does not need a teacher to cultivate it. -

Aikido In Competition
Ichi_Geki replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
There is. All martial arts were originally combative. However that doesn't mean that all martial arts schools practice to prepare for self defense or combat anymore. but if you have that 'budo mind frame' Wouldnt you be able to make everything effective in your own right? -
