Uechi Ryu, Goju Ryu, and Kobudo

Some shotokan styles use a side kick with the heel as the striking point...but in Uechi Ryu and ONE goju ryu teacher I had used the "cutting" edge of the foot..."Sokuto"...so No a side kick is not a side kick, per se.

which style?

Pangainoon of course resembles Uechi Ryu... -
In my opinion...your either Deshi or Sensei...Do you think you exceed your sensei?

To further polish my soul through martial arts and become a better person all around.

If Kata are different, than everything is different...including principles of technique. If you are not experienced enough you will lose track of your motives, and you will forget which is which. So...Principles of Tensho in Goju Ryu will only confuse a inexperienced practitioner of Shotokan. Goju Ryu and Shotokan have no similar Katas. If you were a Uechi Ryu Student, moving to Goju Ryu...I would have no contests of one transferring...but Shotokan and Goju ryu are not that similar.

My student who I am about to test for him to being graded to Sandan is looking at new kuro obi. I asked him what kind of belt would he like, and that if he passes to sandan I will buy him that belt, no matter what the cost or style. He points at my belt and says "One like yours". By that he is referring to the one black belts that the black flakes off after a while of wearing and it starts turning grayish-whitish. Although...I forgot what kind of belt my Sensei bought for me...I want to say it is a sating belt...but I am unsure now. Could someone please help me out here?...haha.

Moving on to a new Dojo and skipping grades

Just as an example... How would you feel with a Mcdojo Kuro Obi around your waist? -
Welcome. It is really well respectable for you to be going about it this way..'shopping around'. I would say just discuss your needs with the Goju instructor. And see if he can cope with them. But dont limit yourself to just Karate either. Shop around in other styles also.

A Nihon version of Sensei is in reference to anyone that comes before you. But also in nihon sensei can also be of the highest achievement.

Jackie Chan is an extremely good acrobat...but a Karate Ka...No... -
Very nice posts. I believe it is meant literally to kill with one hit. Although I have also heard it being called ichi geki hissatsu. but what ever. but in a modern day translation I would call it..."knocking out, or emaciating with one hit"...because lets face it...if you kill someone...your in trouble even with "self defense"...

I would offer to eat it with the Man who gave it to you, in HIS house.

I host three camps...and they are all free...to my students and to others. Dansha - Its a summer camp that only has Dan level holders participating Kangeiko - A winter camp in November where we train outside in the snow. And Hatsu Geiko - New yrs training this is a week long camp and its open to all styles, we have training seminars from my school and others and at the end of this new yrs training we have a tournament. For dan testing...I have my students donate what they can to the school for new equipment if they can afford to. If not...the test requires no cash...for my kyu levels same difference. -
Karate Do is still to this day not considered an Martial Art. They may use some striking principles but it is not considered a martial art. When you enlist in the Japanese Army they dont say to you "Karate is the martial art of Japan". Te (Karate in its old form) was used for the Ryu Kyu Army. I am aware of "My way of life"...Also with "Karate Kyumon" and "Karate Do Nyumon". Funakoshi Sensei was a physical Education teacher, not a military teacher. He taught for the school not the military. He brought it over to Japan to popularize it. But it was never used fully in the military, therefore it is not a martial art. "Kara Te Do" Is the popular term for empty hand styles. Its better than walking around saying "I practice kaishu". Although if your meibukan styled than you have your own Kata section to choose from. regardless of what YOU think or I think...Karate Is not a military art. If it were dont you think we would call it "Te Jutsu"? I will only believe that Karate is a martial art if you show me military training video, such as the United States so gratefully shows their krav maga demonstrations. I know people who are in the Japanese Military and they have confirmed that Karate is not used as a martial art. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Judo modern to an extent. Judo was around in the 1920's or so Im led to believe (Which does not classify to be modern to me...anything after 1950 I believe is modern). Funakoshi Sensei adopted the belt colorings from Jiigaro Kano...and alot of people do not know that classical Karate ka did not wear the keikogi known as gi for karate training. IT was ALSO adopted from Judo.

Just remember not to get to focused on achieving a dan rank. Its about the journey to that dan rank. And welcome...

And also...The okinawan language "uchinaguchi" is not a mere dialect of Japanese language. It is a language on its very own.

As a student of mostly Goju/Uechi. I would tell you to wait till you reach shodan in Goju Ryu before you continue onto Shotokan. At a kyu level I dont think many people have the ability to differntiate between principles of different styles. I did not begin my goju ryu training until I was a nidan in Uechi Ryu. And once I obtained a shodan in Goju Ryu I went onto get a shodan in Shotokan Karate as well. I think at Shodan one is able to understand and respect the arts better.

I quote confuscious "Whever you go and whatever you do, go along with all your heart". You should do what you feel is right in a moment like this, because obviously its a internal conflict with what you think is right and wrong. -
That is a very good book. I own all of Mr Kim's Books.

Yes, I love Annanko ( I will call it Annanko no te from now on haha). It is a very beautiful kata. And I hope to spread this form around as well. Im working on getting a video camera to post it to youtube soon.

Happy Holidays All, and a happy new yr too!!

Just remember this. Never set a goal for a short time. Your goal is to kick above your head. Go about it like this. Start with your knee level kicks then work on your hip level kicks then work on your solar plexus level kicks and then work on your pectoral level kicks then finally work on your head shots. Space each one out atleast one or two months, but look forward to starting now and achieving this by next year the same time. This way its a long term goal broke down into smaller commitments...much like going from white belt to black belt....Just dont rush yourself.
