  2. Start with a friend or an associate. That way you have someone to keep you on top of you 'game'.
  3. Ahhh haha now I understand haha. I use osu, as a 'train hard' in a sense...Good or bad I dont really care haha.
  4. Osu, I thought you might be a Sensei J from the West Cost; you have similar backgrounds. I see you like to Osu' (Please no one mention the 24 fighting chickens) WNM 24 fighting chickens?
  5. Nice to meet you and welcome. May I ask what TAGB is?
  6. Kudos also for joining a martial arts class, but I would recommend, if there is an option in your area, to learn a system that is more self-defense oriented than TKD is. A Japanese/Okinawan system such as shorinryu, gojoryu, shotokan, aikido, etc, or Parker Kenpo, kick boxing, and others are much more self-defence oriented with an emphasis on practical techniques, not flash and breaking boards/bricks...all of which are worthless when it comes to defending yourself IMO. As for the gun, it will give you more self confidence, but again, is useless unless you walk around with it in your hand and are trained in its use, and most importantly, are actually prepared to use it if you have to. Not all TKD is about flash and breaking. I would greatly suggest you sit in on a few of the classes and stray away from the demo classes. Also check for Uechi Ryu......and Goju Ryu Ossu!
  7. Alright. I never had this problem, before, but recently a few students are complaining of sharp knee pains. I will check their toes, starting tonight..... Thanks again all.
  8. I can't agree... I think some very few people really are masters in every sense of the word that matters to me. Is your objection one of personal values (i.e. concern about your relationship to the master... what acknowledging someone as master takes from your self-determination in their presence? possibly preserving a religious or idealogical freedom?)? Or do you just think nobody's that good a fighter? Cheers, Tony First of all There will always be some one working to be better than the next. I believe one can have mastery of an art, but yet they should not be called master. Even members of a hanshi status say they are nothing more than a mere student. I believe once you become a so called master, than you feel you can take a break and you may go lax, this is unacceptable, a Teacher should be in front or alongside his students training even harder than his students... but like I said, I believe once one gets that status as a master...they believe their training and learning days are over...some may not think this way, but I know the majority that I have met do believe this.
  9. Thanks for the wealth of knowledge, I will relay this one to him. He use to play football and basketball, so he was always running alot also. So maybe he had some prior injury in one of those sports...Thanks again.
  10. I think your question gets off to a bad start by limiting the answer. For me, the term master has certain connotations, and should be awarded when someone has achieved a certain level of ability, insight, and character (confidence, determination). What dan level might roughly correspond varies wildly between schools. Indeed, in many schools the standard of practitioners at the same dan level can vary too. That said, my old school would consider someone of 4th dan to be a master - the only person at that level locally had been the local chief instructor for about 20 years beforehand, kept at 2nd dan by an 8th dan who didn't like sharing "power" (or money, apparently), before splitting off his own school and (opaquely) rising a couple dans in a couple years (and a couple more not too long after that). Dans and titles are all politics to me, and I'm unashamedly cynical about all three . Cheers, Tony Please feel free to express your opinion in a vast way. You do not need to limit your answer, if you wish to express it. I gave a few examples, I was not about to list every martial art, and I said MOST schools reward a 4th dan to the title master. And in my opinion...NO ONE should have that title...Even at a hanshi level.
  11. haha, yeah. btw I competed injured. while i was walkin around waiting to compete Wanda noticed that I was bleeding and there was a pool of blood the total size of four American quarters on the floor . Seems I stepped on one the metal steps and it sliced off part of my toe. Not much just enough to make it bleed quite a bit. They were right surprised; I was walkin around like nothing happened, I didnt even know i'd been cut until they poiinted it out to me. They fixed me up, my sensei said to me Ya think you got enough blood to do kata? Oh ya. got enough for that. Then, I said to him, I can pass out. lol. I'm fine btw. Just stinging a bit thats all. it only needed a bandaid. btw the other white belt said to me, 'wait til we get paired up in class in sparring btw I'll get ya then' Ignoring the fact that in class on friday I nearly took out a black belt during sparring and he had to twist to get out of the way of my kick to the groin area. Meanwhile the other white belt, who i beat in competition, got smacked in the face by the brown belt he was sparring with. but oh yeah. It was fun to beat the guy =] Thats wondeful...The part about you continuing on...not the part where you cut yourself. Thats never good. Although I have never had to compete with an injury that was spur of the moment, I did have to spar for a test with a sling on my right arm. I did win the match...but it was an extreme test. I believe I was going for ikkyu at the time. But it was definately a different "scenario". I wish you the best of luck, in your training.
  12. What attributes to weak knees? He use to be a tad bit over weight...could that effect it?
  13. Ossu, Congratulations. Glad to hear you did well. Although I am a guy, I love to hear it when girls beat the guys, haha. I bet you can't wait for the next one, aye?
  14. http://cdn-viper.demandvideo.com/media/46B0F248-143E-4CC6-8DB9-7ED68AC27EB2/jpeg/AA1BE1E0-65E4-43A6-80F7-F0ECFEBF3CEA_3.jpg I have a student that has sharp pains in his knees when he does the above stretch. Does this mean he has weak knees?...I think so...and if he does have weak knees...what would you suggest as a means to strengthen them?
  15. Welcome to the board. I have a student who has a weak heart...not sure if that is the same or not... But he just has to take a beak every so often and sit down until the color returns back to his face. We dont spar often...we emphasize on Kihon mostly...but with that even he has a mild difficulty with.
  16. To everyone BUDO is something to their own. Richard, your aspect on budo is different than mine, My students aspects on budo are their own. I mold them physically, and HELP to mold them mentally. No one can mold anyone mentally, it is up to that person to achieve the aspect they truly want. I dont wish to brainwash my students into believing my aspects on budo, because then they lose their own personal interest. For those that wish to mold their students in a form of mental training, I am all for that. Teach them respect, teach them to have a proper attitude, teach them to be a warrior...but do not ever try and change or alter their views on something that is personal such as budo..many dont understand budo truly. I believe a good article was on this latest Classical fighting arts magazine. They say that budo is like a religion that is not a religion. It is close to the heart and mind, but yet it is far away. How can you truly perceive this to be the same to everyone? Budo is instilled within the Aiki Spirit, indeed. But Budo is in every art form. Karate, Judo, Aikido, (and their counterparts adding Jutsu, Ie...aikijutsu Ju Jutsu). and Kobudo. True Budo I believe is within the mind and heart. This way no one is wrong.
  17. Always makes me giggle when I see the word Kancho. A quick Google search will show you why, as it is the name given to a schoolyard prank played by Kids in Japan - similar to what we would call a "Wedgie" here in the UK. Kancho is not one of the original Sho-go titles (as far as I am aware) - ie, Renshi, Kyoshi and Hanshi. As I understand it, it comes from the term Kanchou, which means "Director" as in company directory. Its a position of office within an organisation, rather than a title of recognition. So next time you here someone being referred to as Kancho - just think "Wedgie" and steer well clear of their karate club. WNM I believe Kyokushin and Ju Jutsu made that term popular no?
  18. Haha yes indeed. Maybe we should go and make a fan club for it..."Coalition of martial artists who like "haru no Katami"...its so soothing and beautiful....Chitose hajime is pretty also.
  19. Luca is good, but IMO his versions of katas are little to fast. If you compare his Unsu to Kagawa's students: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q42Br_EaDlg Kagawa's students timing and speed seem (IMO) more appropriate. Mr valdesi is Extremely FAST...too fast I agree...
  20. Ahh well. learning is always a good thing, and you are lucky to be alive...but you should always be looking for ways to move around it also. So the should just back off, haha. But back on track... Expertvillage, and youtube, have a few good escape techniques. If you feel like listening through all the introductions of who is who, than those would be good places to see something visual.
  21. One scenario we work on is when in a bear hug, you thrash your head backwards, in an attempt to hit a vital point in the face. But there are other scenarios that we work on, but it is extremely difficult to talk one through it through internet. Have you spoken to your TKD instructor at all about this?
  22. Well kudos to you for taking martial arts. very glad to hear it and welcome to the world of Martial arts. A handgun pretty much sums it up. Thats a very good self defense tool. most times if you pull it out, the assailants should flee...that is unless their hard core into getting what they want, which is the case alot of times. SO, I really wouldnt pull it out, unless you do plan to give it a squeeze. Now to answer your question. I do think that a woman your height and size can get out of a hold such as that. So I assume he had a front hold on you. I would say the first thing you should do is get out of the grab or hold he had on you. What kind of hold did he have on you? What was he grabbing on to?
  23. First off... Are you in any martial arts class? And...do you carry anything that can be used as a weapon?
  24. Of course! But the american way is 'show respect' although respect is misguided between the two cultures. What they do is actually disrespectful to me, my teacher and the organization, but...to them it is showing immediate respect and compassion towards me.
