  1. I have no shogo title. Since I am only a fourth degree. But my students refer to me as renshi, they dont do this infront of me, but I figured one of my shodans referred to me as renshi, because a white belt referred to me as renshi once...And he is friends with one of my shodans.
  2. EXACTLY!!!...my students call me what ever..some call me sempai (DUE to the fact my teacher usually visits me during my classes) Some call me sensei, and some call me renshi which I do not prefer...My ranking as of now is fourth degree, and I am testing for fifth degree next june.
  3. I like this idea. Theres a story of Chibana Choshin that speaks of why he does Passai Dai kata the way he does, I say this is a story because I am unsure of its truth. But... His version of Passai Dai is done because of the way he seen a villager fight against a person on a bridge. And he noticed he did not use the wide stances as seen in other forms of Passai Dai. And instead his style pauses more for an effect on following his opponent. Because Chibana sensei's passai dai focuses on someone surrounding him.
  4. Has anyone ever seen this Kobudo Kata done? I have never seen it outside of my style. I have seen the te version, but never the kobudo version...(Unless done by me or my organization".
  5. I see. I think it adds to the art also. So its not just a series of flailing techniques...which Sepai kata would look like if not for the pauses. It shows ichi geki hissatsu in some kata when you pause and move to another angle.
  6. Like in Kata such as Suparinpei, and Seiyunchin?
  7. I know one "Kancho Master" thats a nidan haha, he opened up his own school last year and runs a LARGE Mc Dojo...He awards shodan after one year...but he has the title of "judan" and is only 27 yrs old....
  8. WNM Pretty much summed up my feelings...
  9. Good luck tomorrow...
  10. I pulled this from that wikipedia article... And yes I agree...we cannot learn if we do not ask, and those that dont know can always wiki...haha.
  11. The decathalon (5 sport olympic event) is a combination of pistol marksmanship, equestrain riding, fencing, SWIMMING and RUNNING. It was originally used as a military training system in Germany for horse-back messengers. Not of military use anymore, that's true. But, like I said, you'd be suprised what skills have been considered "martial arts" at one time or another. Just a little useless knowledge there. Thanks. Very USEFUL NOT USELESS...haha. You'd be surprised at how interesting these topics truly become with posts like these.
  12. So of course Sensei of a college classroom would not be equivalent to sensei in a dojo though, right?...Or would it?... because from translation i get sensei meaning "to come before" Im just trying to get more clarity so I ask alot of questions haha.
  13. Ahh yes very good. I knew about this one as well. In my style we use 6th dan as renshi, 8th as shihan and 10th as Hanshi, So mine is similar to Goju Ryu also.
  14. The only recorded instance of age for the term Kara Te is when it first arrived in Japan, with funakoshi. This is what I am saying. Ju Jutsu is a martial art. hence the jutsu part at the end and it is practiced in todays military as was it practiced by the bushi of Japan. And hence the japanese/okinawan difference of bushi. Japanese = Samurai Okinawan = Master of Te. Kendo, Aikido, and Judo are not martial arts. Although I cannot say much for Judo I am not well versed in the history of it. But with Kendo and AIkido I am...but if you notice, those above three stemmed from Jutsu..Kenjutsu, Aiki jutsu, and Ju jutsu. So maybe in a pre feudal time they were practiced by the military who are we to say they weren't or were unless we have publicized truths? I want facts over opinions. But opinions are always welcomed. If you change okinawan karate and turn it to fit the needs of the japanese then it turns into japanese karate. Just like if you tweak a traditional kata...is it still traditional...NO...same thing. What was once then, and now changed, it will not be the same...
  15. I am in love with this song haha. Can anyone please tell me what the name is?...And video is great too of course haha.
  16. At what dan level do you think it is appropriate to call a teacher a master?...I know many schools including Kajukenpo, Oh Do Kwan, Song Ahm, and Tang Soo do, allow their fourth degrees to be called master. I dont believe that a fourth degree has enough experience to be called master. What are your opinions kind people?
  17. I believe he says he wants a belt that frays...he has yet to classify as to which frays...cause he doest NOT KNOW!!!
  18. True but to some it is a symbol of their advancement in knowledge of technique. And if you want to get into traditional matters it DOES MATTER. Traditionally NOT classically. It is proper to be awarded a silk or satin belt. As this is a higher quality belt, and it is set to represent a major part of your martial art life. In some arts the final belt is red , but if this is the case. You will be a black belt from shodan to judan. So quality if sufficient. When you send your kids on the bus to school with their lunch do you give them a small apple or a big apple to hold them over?...And they are only gone for at the most 7 hours. This is a life long journey. Classically, you would just get a plain cotton, one, or whatever was on hand or cheap at the time. Unless it was feasible to get a silk or satin obi.
  19. In the okinawan language there is no term as Kara meaning empty. Japanese prounounce te as teh, Okinawans pronounce it as tee. Karate is the japanese version of te. Thus making it Japanese. It was not given the name Karate till it reached the mainland. In Okinawan is was called 唐手 meaning chinese hand. When it reached the mainland it was known as 空手 empty hand. At the time Funakoshi was trying to explore the mainlands with his Karate, Japan had just invaded China, and manchuria...thus the name "Chinese hand" would not go over very well. So he had to change it over to something more appeasing to his cliental shall we say? Seisan was turned into Hangetsu Wanchu turned into empi Naihanchi turned into tekki Pinan into heian. Those are just a few of the examples, that Funakoshi did to change the chinese and okinawan names into Japanese names. Thus making this version of Te or chinese hand "Karate"...making it Japanese.
  20. In Uechi Ryu we Break Baseball bat with our forearms. I am working on a exhibition with my students on a a scenario such as yours. Although, we do break 2 in thick pieces of board over our forearms as a starter. And we dont strike the wood...it strikes us...
  21. If he really knew which one he wanted, what would the purpose be of this thread?
  22. I understand the point. but yet we are not helping him out at all by quoting Pat Morita.
  23. The character 唐 referes to the Tang dynesty in China, and can be pronounced To (as seen in Tode, referecencing your use of "Te") OR Kara. Also as I said above, the Japanese would not have considered karate a "classic" martial art since such arts were no longer used in combat. Thats exactly what I said basically in my first post... Kara Te was never a martial art. Ju Jutsu was practiced as a martial art. But never Kara Te.
  24. The guy just wants to know about nice brand belts...he doesnt care about the philosphy of what a belt is for...
  25. Whats the required kata to receive your shodan?...Other than the others that you already know. Whats the 'new' kata you must learn? For my style its two... Passai Dai, and Gojushiho sho
