DIET...what a 4-letter word that is! I came across an interestin site...it is called the 'Dessert Wizard' http://my.webmd.com/dessertwizard I kinda indulged this week with all the candy from Halloween...so when I saw this I thought let me play around with it a bit. You plug in the dessert item you ate...and the wizard lets you know how much activity you will have to perform to make up for it! I don't particularly care for the list of activities they have as choices...I can think of better activities. but anyway its fun! I put in 'Truffles' (6oz) ...actually it was a big Hershey milk chocolate bar and plugged in 'Take a Nap' as an activity ...and it came up with 6 hours and 55 min. of naptime to burn off those calories!!! How can that be?

Well obviously you are an experienced runner if you have been doing it for years. As taezee suggested you might need new running shoes. Also, try keeping your shoulders relaxed and chest out and open. Do not lean forward. Abs nice and tight! Remember not to arch your back and stick your butt out either as this can cause back and hip pain too! Concentrate on getting a full push off with the back leg, and plant the forward foot close to the front of the body. Then, roll completely through the step, and give a good push off in back. In taking a good close review of how you run this might alleviate that back pain you are experiencing.

Rambo2001...not very good advice...(this is coming from a Sensei) You are never too old to start martial arts, as long as you are physically able to train. Of course, the older you get, the more difficult it will be to win in competition for instance, but karate is much broader than sparring. The most important aspect of a training is that you feel good about the training and that you make progress on both physical and mental level...and you will, it takes time & practice. Remember...as our SahBumNihm told us as students beginning "A black belt is a white belt that never quit"!

You don't need a gym to develop your "pectoralis major"...maybe just a bar, bench and a pair of dumbbells. :pony: :pony: (no not those! ) Start with bench press, followed by pushups and then flyes. Select a weight for which you'll be able to complete 12-15 reps per set for a total of 6 sets per exercise. When it becomes easier increase the weight. Muay's routine above same as bench pressing...nice routine if you don't have barbell and bench! Flyes...hold dumbbells above chest as you lie on bench or floor. Fully extend arms w/palms faced in. Slowly lower weights straight out to the side..(but try to keep nost of the motion in your shoulder joints not your elbows). Lower the weight to where you feel a slight stretch in your chest. Now squeeze those pecs and bring dumbbells together in semicircular motion back up to starting point...and repeat! Girls....this develops that nice line down the center of your chest..."muscular cleavage"!!

Kyepka (Korean for board breaking in taekwondo)... is one of the four major elements in earning your black belt in TKD. In order to earn black belt degree in our school it is obligatory to break 6 boards (3 each w/hand technique) --6 boards (3 each w/foot technique). Breaking objects can be performed with any rigid part of the body. In tae kwon do, the most common are the hand or the foot, but breaking can also be done by using the elbow, the knee and even the head. Breaking an object is a good way to practice concentration, power, focus, speed and precision on non-living objects, without injuring yourself or someone else in the process.. It is important to realise that proper technique is needed and a breaking technique within your limits, because without it you can easily injure yourself and sometimes even permanently! So breaking really relies on technique and of course ...the law of physics! ok...here goes...its been a while since I've been in school soooo.... Impulse = force (delivered by the strength of t=your muscles) times time (delivered by the speed of your movement). Therefor, the shorter your contact with the board, the bigger the force component will be and therefore, the easier the board will break. momentum = mass (weight) x velocity (speed in a certain direction), The change in momentum is the momentum when you hit the target minus the momentum when you come to a stop, which is determined by weight and speed (== impulse. The force applied to stop a movement determines how quickly it has stopped, since we can say that the mass used to create the momentum will not change. When the force meets the board, the top of the board will be in a state of compression and the bottom will be in tension. This will produce a torque on an axis through the middle of the board. If the torque is great enough the board will break .... and yes what a rush it is!!! Practicing breaking objects helps you to realise that your body itself is a very strong weapon. It also helps you to understand that during practice with a partner, you have to be very careful. _________________ 1st Deg. I can answer this question best when asked the opposite ..."What is it you do not like to do in class?".. I like doing forms, floor techniques/combos, target shield kicking, board breaking, no gear one step sparring and full gear SPARRING!!!!! I enjoy circuit training but we don't do that very often...I will have to request it! Usually what you dislike is what you find you are not that proficient at....and mine is jump kicks. What we usually do at our school is line up folding chairs or stack target shields one on top of each other...(my max. is 5 bags, jumping almost my waist high) but I've seen double that done. Chairs is another thing...it really is a mental block for me...the height and distance is really the same but... chairs = hard and target shields = soft. Pain is the mental block. Its not only the technique but the power of the mind to see oneself follow thru and complete. _________________ 1st Deg. Yes, taezee ... I believe a good foundation first in one ma is best.

Yes Sensei iamrushman I do agree. 'Humble', is easy. I believe the whole world (except maybe a group of crazy people) have been humbled by experiences of late. As far as stress....I believe stress is inevitable in our way of life - in our quality of life now with these warnings of more danger against us. Makes one want to find that deserted island and bake one's butt in the sun while sipping one of them umbrella drinks!!! Now that would be a stress-free, humbling way of life. _________________ 1st Deg. It is beneficial for all martial artists to cross- train within the other martial arts and understand all styles rather than have a false sense of security. The purest form of martial arts is the fighting/sparring. No matter what you have learned, if you cannot apply it, you have wasted money and years of training. If you can't fight anyone from anystyle, you have a lot more to learn. Many styles can and do complement one another. Aikido is good for self defense but you might want to learn an attacking martial art such as wing chun and a kicking martial art like tae kwon do. As was my case, sticking with one art for a prolonged period gets you frustrated because you are not learning anything new. _________________ 1st Deg. Do everything possible to strengthen your immune system! Not only for flu season but also to resist the threat of anthrax and smallpox! Here was something that was sent to me by the American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) What is the immune system? The immune system of our body is our body's defense system. It protects us from foreign particles that enter our body. It could be divided into two categories: non-specific defenses and specific defenses. The non-specific defenses include: 1. The skin is a barrier to remove foreign invaders and acts as a physical barrier. 2. the mucous membranes which act to trap and 3. cilia, which line the respiratory tract and sweep away foreign materials that are inhaled 4. the acid in the stomach, which destroys microorganisms that are ingested 5. the circulatory white blood cells, which engulf and destroy foreign invaders that enter into the blood 6. the interferons, which are produced by cells that have been infected with a virus and carry a signal to adjacent cells, thereby protecting them from the infecting virus. The specific responses are mediated through the immune system, which recognizes the particular invading substance and responds specifically to that substance. The Anatomic Response, the Inflammatory Response, and the Immune Response are the three types of defense responses in the immune system. The first line of defense against foreign particles is the Anatomic Response. An example will be the stomach acid and the skin. Anatomic barriers prevent foreign articles from entering into our body. If foreign articles do get through the first line of defense, then the second line of defense attacks them, which is the Inflammatory Response. The Immune Response is the central part of the immune system. It is the key fighter that protects us from foreign invaders. HOW TO STRENGTHEN AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM 1.Cut out eating anything with fat such as animal flesh and dairy products. Eliminate all foods and drinks that are not good for you. (You know what they are.) 2. Exercise as vigorously as you can five days a week for at least 15-20 minutes, if you possibly can, preferably outside. 3. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. 4. Get sufficient rest preferably retiring well before midnight. 5. Get at least 15 minutes a day of sunshine on your skin if possible. 6.Develop an attitude of gratitude. Learn to be thankful for all things. (This alone is an immune enhancer.) _________________ 1st Deg. I'm a gentle tiger. I'm not a fighter unless I am provoked and then watch out. Because of my stubborness (a Taurus) means I never back down....and rarely do I think first, my emotions get the best of me. Dragons have also been known in Chinese culture are seen as strong , fierce protectors. I have that quality too...I'm a mom!

Thanks all of you for the great ideas. Tomorrow is the day...not sure what I will do actually. I am doing a break...possibly a speed break of some sort ...palm heel, hook punch or 360 round kick or jump spin back. Oh, and a witches costume huh??? I'll get you my little pretty...and youre little dog too!!!!

Moobrack....sounds like maybe you cut back toomuch on your carb intake. That is how I felt when I went on a low carb diet. Not very smart if you are very active. You need those carbs for energy...instant fuel! Your diet should actually be the same as it always was...just add some more protein, a little less fat (you can have a little more of the "good" fat) and keep eating those carbs. Think sensibly (as you are) when eating. When you feel good you're doing something right....when you feel sluggish and downright miserable, your body is telling you something! If you don't eat sensibly (that is...fruit & veggies) take a real good multi vitamin at least. Just remember to increase mass you have to eat several meals (5 min.) Morning breakfast-mid morn. snack-Lunch-mid afternoon snack-Dinner. If you are gaining want to gain weight than do the opposite of what I listed in No.1 (sorry I am always giving advice to people who want to cut calories not add them to gain weight). To gain weight you need to increase calories...simple as that! But you always want to watch the fat because although you will gain more fat when building mass...remember you then need to cut back and go to a low fat diet afterwards to then tone those muscles and it is just in your best interests to not gain an undesirable amount of fat in the process. Good Luck Moobrack!
