I agree with robwilliams. Get yourself a book or enlist the help of a qualiifed person in order to show you correct form. You can cause injury by lifting improperly ... and improper objects! Invest in some free weights .. really they are not expensive.

What do I think??? What a great opportunity! Is this something you want to do... teach? If so, talk about opportunity knocking at your door! You didn't mention $$$ .... that would be my only hesitation..... -
I would say, "go for it" .... but I see you already formed an opinion that you may be uncomfortable being the only girl, and with that I say, .... you need to feel "comfortable" with the school you intend to train at, and the only way that you can find this out is if you take a class or two. Good luck!
-
My suggestion is to wait unitl you actually begin taking class and find out exactly what you'll be needing! I mean you could be either wasting your money or buying the incorrect items your particular school requires that you have. I understand you're excited to begin but you may even have to wait a designated time in order to even begin to spar. ... is it May 12th yet????

I've seen the analogy of quitting after achieving black belt to receiving an expensive sports car, and then never changing the oil, or caring for the car, until it finallyfall s apart. Well I have to admit that I "almost" quit entirely before I became involved here at KarateForums. Actually when I started posting here I was just returning after taking a year long break .... (which was almost .... almost permanent!) I still continued to teach kickboxing classes during the week. I had my black belt for a year and found I wasn't personally advancing and improving ... Perhaps the answer is exposure to dedicated and interested masters or higher-ranking students, who can show the first-degree black belts that they are merely beginners. All martial artists need to remember that mastery of a style is a process, not a destination, and if they can keep trudging through those slumps their skills will not desert them. In all actuality the person must decide for themselves whether to continue their training (many parents do make the decision for certain kids). Also an instructor should not attempt to make a student feel bad or guilty for quitting. Instead, the instructor should give the student every opportunity to understand the reasons for not quitting. During that year I took off, several adults became black belts and so it was necessary to add a black belt only class. I decided to return and found these classes much more challenging than the basic "adult" advanced belt classes and decided to "go for it" ... my second degree.... Instructors need to focus their curriculum for their black belts. You see for some black belts it may be a decision to quit when they hit a slump, telling themselves they will just take a break from the martial arts and then return. Most, of course, never come back. I did!! I have to thank alot of the friends I have right here on the forum ... You all may not know this but KF was another driving force in my decision to return! ... (plus my husband said I was an absolute bi*$h ... go back PLEASE he said!)

For speed kicks, stay on on the balls of your feet and stay loose ... don't set up before you kick.... and kick explosively .... immediately go back on guard for the next kick. Kick ten times with each leg then switch sides for each kick. Next move around going back and forth, circling, etc. changing the height and distance of the bag if you can.

Poplar, The Uncertainty Looks very decorative, no self-confident behavior, only courageous if necessary, needs goodwill and pleasant surroundings, very choosy, often lonely, great animosity, artistic nature, good organizer, tends to philosophy, reliable in any situation, takes partnership serious. some more close to truth than others

I've read this book by Jerry Van Cook where he explained this "new wave of self defense" that has occured here (in US) in the last few years at least. This new wave of martial arts stresses "true" combat over art and sport, fighting over system. This new wave of thinking recognizes that the vast majority of men and women who enter a dojo are now doing so with the serious goal of leaning to defend themselves and not to win trophies or to learn a new hobby.

Well, the thread is evolving from the original topic ... "where do you see martial arts going" as you asked..... Many see that with tv programming and the like there will be a growing interest in martial arts.... and in turn business will profit from it.--so we have an offshoot thread as SaiFightsMS posted http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6783 .... but "sponsorship in the martial arts" will be a trend that may boost the future of the martial arts .... or commercialize it so that it becomes a "fad" (and I thought General Chat was where we posted stuff having nothing to do with the martial arts.) This has alot to do with the future of the martial arts ... So this is where "I" see the martial arts going when "sponsorship" gets a hold of it .... somebody is making $$$http://216.40.249.192/s/contrib/anym/win.gif Now we have two threads to post on

Korean Information
KickChick replied to KickChick's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Thanks I thought this would be a nice inclusion to this forum .... Korean names consist of three Chinese characters that are pronounced with three Korean syllables. The family name comes first, and the remaining two characters form the given name. There are about 300 family names in Korea, but only a few make up the majority of the population. The most common names are Gim or Kim, Lee or Yi, Pak or Park, An, Jang, Jo, Choe or Choi, Jong or Chong, Han, Gang, Yu or Yoo and Yun or Yoon. Korean women do not change their family when they marry. When Americans call a woman Mrs. Smith that means she is the wife of a man named Smith. In Korea, when a married woman says she is Mrs. Kim, it usually means is the name she was born with. -
