If your University has open space in the gym then you better check it out with the University. They will advise you to what they will allow. Also you have requirements. Do you monitor the requirements? Are you organizing this? What is light contact to the head? What if you kick someone in the head harder than that, then what? Who determines who is advanced or an intermediate? Hey, if the University goes for it then ultimately they will be responsible. If you are even remotely worried about your liability then check with the legal department on campus. If someone is going to sue, they won't go after a broke college student, they will hit up the big bucks University that sanctioned this event. Doesn't your University have any clubs that meet on a regular basis? I would start there.

Galaga! An oldie but a goodie.

Welcome Ground Shark. You picked a good name for the forums!

Welcome. Eighteen is a great age to start training. Go for it!

Remember, you can be sued for anything, even if someone signs a piece of paper. The contract, if it is even legal, can only protect you if you have acted reasonably and not negligently. My advice is to go to your University's legal services, which are usually free and get some real legal advice, especially if you are going to have people in this club that you don't know or trust. Now with you being a college student you may want to organize under an existing club. Usually these clubs are protected under the University's blanket of insurance. If you are only looking to go to a park and spar with two or three friends, then I wouldn't even worry about it. Just make sure you have a level of trust and know each others abilities and limitations. When I was in college, I joined a University club and worked out for free. I also met a guy in my dorm who I started to train with. We would go down to the park and spar. We used common sense and never had a problem.

How long do you stretch/warmup for class?
Red J replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
The basic class stretches for the first 15 minutes of every hour long class. In our advanced class, you are to be stretched out before the class begins so that the full hour is purely instruction and practice. -
Drew Carey calls them he-hooters.

I think you are right about that.

I don't know if MA is growing faster than the population is growing or if it is just holding its own. Most of the new places in my town that have popped up really cater to children as that seems to be a new niche in the market (ie improved discipline, monitor grades, mini-tournaments, self esteem building, etc.). The more traditional dojos seem to have more adults as they are seen as more serious. It would be interesting to see how many adults, per 1000, are in MA. Any stats out there? Unless Gallop has done a poll or some MA company has done a survey, the answer may be hard to find. I don't know too many adults that take MA (outside of my dojo of course).

This thread reminded me of a song. "Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting". So if you dance to this song .....relax, J/K.....Uh, now I can't get it out of my head. -
Tessone, now you've got a good deal there.

Good one. I liked the top ten ways to know you belong to a McDojo. My favorite: Your instructor tries to sell you Amway products.

Guess.....Ringworm? Does it itch? Do an internet search. If it is ringworm it is easily treated as it is just a fungus.

Is anyone aware of this guy and his practice?
Red J replied to Tweedy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"It had to be simple enough to teach students in days or weeks instead of years!" IMO this statement sounds like a big red flag. It really plays upon your sense of urgency. If I have learned one thing in my training it would be that nothing comes overnight. That's about as far as I went into the website. -
Is your do jo hidden from the outside world?
Red J replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
The cool thing about my dojo is that when the adults train, the shades are drawn. This gives you a certain amount of privacy and cuts down on that "fishbowl" effect. The public outside can see partially through the angled blinds, but their view is distorted and not enough to be distracting to those that are training. If someone wants to come in, they just have to walk around to the other entrance, which is in a less traveled area. I appreciate the blinds because in my line of work, I get enough attention from the public. It actually made the dojo more appealing. -
Welcome Mark.

And who says you can't learn anything from a white belt? Sounds like he had a lot to offer. More than most had bargained for. -
Man that pass gas in church will sit in own pew.

OK, clean. Man who run in front of car soon get tired. Man who run in back of car get exhausted. War doesn't determine who is right, it determines who is left. I heard these and some I can't repeat this weekend.

wrist strengthing and different types of push ups
Red J replied to risingdragon's topic in Health and Fitness
To hit the triceps more try putting your hands closer together so that the your index finger and thumbs touch. Go wider to get more chest flex. If you go slow and feel resistance you will get more benefit than by just cranking them out. With knuckles and fingertips you want to be careful and maybe just do a few. You may want to strengthen your wrists and fingers against the wall first before you try full weight like GoldDragon advised in the above post.
