  1. Hello, A black belt is a great accomplishment. Not everone becomes one. It takes dedications, hardwork, and commitment. It means you have reach a high level in the organziation. It also means you have learn all the basic knowledge and now your training at the black belt is to reach for perfections and develop/aquire more skills. We also become a role model for all others to follow. It also means being a teacher and helping other achieve there goals in the martial arts. A Black belt also means one is skill in his martial art. This also means you have a greater responsiblilty to yourself and others around you...BEING MORE MATURE..in your actions and self. A Black belt means growing up...be responsible..lead by examples....being HUMBLE...HONEST..TRUTHFUL...AND SHOW KINDNESS!!! .....these are my thoughts...........Aloha
  2. Hello, Astronaut Farmer is a great family movie to watch. My kids really enjoy it. ......Aloha
  3. Hello, I think I would take the longer weapon (stick). BUT the knife can be thrown. It is better to keep distance and you will be able to strike his knife hand too, before he can close in. ............Aloha (if he is as good as I am? ...We both will lose!). HUH?
  4. Hello, The six inch stick is a very powerful weapon. You will need a good teacher to learn all it's uses' We practice with them and it can be carry in your pocket. Legal too! It is when you use it than it can be a problem with the courts. Never limit you learning.........Aloha PS: You hear people say we never train with that..because our teacher said it is not practical....BUT someone out there may use it against you!
  5. Hello, Butterflies will happen and only because you care and want to do well. Remain focus...do you techniques strong, sharp, and add the kiai's (loud). No one is ever perfect...if you make a mistake in the Kata's just keep on going. Why: in a real fight..it will never go the way you want it to..so the Sensi's want you to keep going! ...........Best of luck to you....Aloha
  6. Hello, There are many plus's and minus of big and small schools. I too was a first degree in Shotokan and the teacher quit (an indepentent school). Today we belong to a very large organzition, with many schools. Anyone who meet the requirments may test for all ranks including up to Assit Professor. You may have to start all over (white belt in another system)...that is OK this will open your eyes and also learn new things. If moving to Las Vegas : Check out Universal Kempo Karate Schools, many of the black belts ending up opening there own schools, and Universal kempo is spreading all over. Research this on the web site : Universal Kempo karate Schools.......Aloha
  7. Hello, Really awasome! It must be nice to be so flexible. Great kata! I think most of us wish we could move like that! .........Aloha
  8. Hello, Sometimes you need too: Anger will make you fight back against your fear you had. The adrenline and anger will make you a fierce fighter. You will also need to learn how to control them too...you do not want to over do it in a real fight and end up in jail for life. Each of our emotions has it place....anger is one of them....learn to control it and use it wisely. Remember there are various levels of ANGER,....as our response to any attacks. .........Aloha
  9. Hello, The Kajukepo has NO islamic roots. It was form in Hawaii under Christen princples. Kajukepo had spread to all over the world and there may be Islamic people training in Kajukepo. Our Professor training under Adriano Emperado, left the system and started his own (UNIVERSAL KEMPO KARATE SCHOOL ASSOCIATIONS) Which is what we train in today.........Aloha
  10. Hello, In many other countries, there training is still the old ways or traditional. Today we would call it brutal training. Even if we think it is brutal training, they have been doing it for a long time. Remember in the old days (many years ago), the training was every day for hours and hours. The conditioning was endless. Toughen the body was the key. Most of us if we went to other country to train (Japen,Okinawa,China,Taiwan, etc) and go to the old schools (not the ones for Americans)....we will not last one night of training, In America very few people train, with full contact, iron shins, hands that looks like a monster? .....and over 3 hours a day everyday...very few ,,very little people train like the old days. Our Professor in his younger days, train for 3 hours a night, and it was very common to go home with bloody nose and black eyes...bruise bodys... If we did this today...NO one would come and train....Maybe that is why? Black Belts in America...has very few meanings anymore? .....Aloha How many of you would like to face those Mayasaisns (oops).
  11. Hello, The right posturing will also help you when you go to court. Also by saying I do not want to fight..out loud for others to hear...will help you in court too (make sure you make some kind of eye contact with the witness standing nearby too). When someone wants to fight you and you have a passive stands...it is you, who are more prepare..it does not let the other person know you are ready. Great topic.......and info's here........Aloha
  12. Hello, Just a thought on this one? You may want to write a letter explaining why you left(your teacher may not be mature enought to understand,..but that is OK). You have the right to quit anytime. It takes courage to leave, and start up somewhere else. Just be polite to your former classmates. You do not need to explain anything and SHOULD NOT! Our Professor quit his Professor, because of some things his Professor was doing was wrong ,among other thing that was not right. Always follow you INSTINCTS'S. Your beliefs are differ from theirs. (seems like your old school does not teach respect to others) You did the right thing by quiting...YOU are no longer a part of there organization. Therefore you have the right to do what you want to do! GO for it! .........Aloha PS: The use of any foul words or any disrepect is unacceptable at all our classes.
  13. Hello, For the younger kids (5-12 years old), we sometimes form several lines and have a relay race with some of our various excerise's. (each time a new excerise). Everyone usually enjoys sparring...we pair them up and say only hands..than only kicks...rotate (new partners)...hands and foot...sometimes only one person is attacking and the other blocking only. If you have use of a video and TV...you may want to order some tapes on martials arts , (competitions of other arts or same). ...tournments and so on....maybe once a month for 1/2 hour. Verbal training: Role playing (get the book "Verbal JUDO")...Aloha
  14. Hello, Eating too much is a bad habit. Everyone also needs to do some excerise, daily. Want to lose weight simple just eat less food and a more healty diet. Even walking for 30 minutes or more every day will help. It takes DISCIPLINE...SELF-CONTROL...can you do it! Best way is not to crash diet, and use self-controls, set goals and a little bit of excerise everyday. (30 minutes or more). Your mind needs the self-control before anything else (JUST DO IT)...!!! Bad habits or any habits are hard to change....the best way is with a NEW habit to replace the old one. IF you cheat? ....than you lose again....Cheating is easy to do....BE HONEST! ...if you want to look great again! Off-course it is hard work....THE best things in life comes from hard work...Aloha
  15. Hello, Have you ever lift something really heavy off the ground, to push something to move it? Do you feel yourself giving a type of yell (kiai)? This is our natural way of adding some power. Has to do with breathing too. Most people who break boards and bricks feels it does add power! There is the mental side of it too (for you) and to the opponant. It means you mean business. A kiai can be giving before an attack or during the strike. As a rule of thumb...if a lot of people do it? ...means there is a good reason for it! Is it necessary in ever strike? ...NO ...is necessay at all? ...NO.. If a person attacks you with Kiai"s?.....wouldn't it intimidate you more! In a real fight? ...it becomes your choice to kiai! Kiai's is a good indication of the other person giving away he is a train martial artist. We practice it kiai's in training...and it does carry over as natural part of our strikes. In time you will know how it works for you? and if how you feel about it both ways. ..I believe you will find kiai's have a purpose. .........Aloha
  16. Hello, Today black belt has loss it's meaning, because anyone can get one and as little as in one year of training. Little kids can earn them too. The primary purpose of the color of belts was for the Sensi to know your level of training. A measurement of training and requirements met for each grade. Kinda like 1st grade,2nd grade and when you reach Shodan going to college 1st Degree and 2nd Degree The Black belt today is not measure by their fighting skills...more because they put the time and money into it. To graduate in High School all you need is a C grade. Lots of Black belts are equal to the C grade. Met the minimum requirements is all you need to pass. Mr. Joe Lewis went to Okinawa to learn Karate, IN less than 7 months he earn his Black Belt. Why? He was beating up all the Black belts in class. His Sensi he met their requirements. The color of belts was started by Kijoro Kano (Judo master). to help moniter the growth of his students. You had to beat several students in the your level before you can move up. Masahiko Kimura instarted JUDO when he was 15 years old, by the time he was 20 he was promoted to 5th Degree in JUDO....He became unbeatable... For those who think the colors mean nothing? ...We do know what you are trying to say. BUT if it is a part of your system...then you must follow your system. It is just a measurement of your level of learning and grades earn. Just my thoughts on this.....Aloha PS: Having the right belt on will keep the pants up....You don't want to show and tell!
  17. Hello, My old Shotokan Instructor said one night: I have been teaching for over 20 years...an only promote 7 people to black belt. (He move alot too) and his training was hard and hard style too. Many people quit before reaching black belt...this is a common thing. So many schools will have only a handful of them left. (for testing sometimes the teacher will ask past black belts that hardly train to help with the testing) or other same type schools to help out also.. One good sign of a school is many different colors belts (means people are staying and like the training) ...if only one color white? you gotta find out why? and if too many Black belts...a flag should go up and say HOW COME? It it too easy to get a black belt here? When I was in College a International Karate school nearby advertise...Earn a black belt in ONE YEAR! ...just got to show and pay the money. Always trust your instincts...if it does not feel right? ...most likely you are correct! It is possible to have lots of Black belts too? ....trust your instincts....Aloha ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One more thing..at our Kempo black belt testing (done only twice a year) we have many schools. All the head of schools who have students testing must be there. Plus All the top Instructors are ask to help our Professor with the testing. You will see nothing but black belts ,accept for those who are testing. All black belt testing is not open to the public and students not testing.
  18. Hello, NOT sure this will help for speed? ...but always bend your wrist for the whip like action at the end (hitting thru the tarket). (not need for point sparring most times) Let see? : as the arm is extended out and back fist hits or hitting the tarket, bend the wrist outside for more power and devatations. as with many punches the KEY is to stay relax until impact (tighten the muscles will only slow you down). Setting up your techniques will give you a little more chance of getting in! .........Aloha
  19. Hello, A mistake by the company may have been an honest one. It sounds like there sales reps need more verbal training. I would just send the pants along w/ the video back together..(keeps the cost down). Hopefully you will get another pants back. (at least you can be fair and honest) ...also NEVER assume anything......Aloha
  20. Hello, From the Shotokan Classes that I remember...the inside and outside cresent kicks were NOT a part of our classes. You may find them more in the Korean arts and chinese styles. Also most karate schools are very traditional in there training, deep stances, long punches and many kata's to learn. Power blocking. May I suggest? JUDO or a KENPO/KEMPO school instead? ...Aloha
  21. Hello, Best thing to do is learn how to revive people from a choke hold. Seek experts on this, but a doctor who knows more on this topic could give you more info? ...have you try SEARCH webs? Our JUDO Sensi knows how to revive those who past out. We did not learn that part yet. (We are still beginners). This was mention on a detective show the other night (It takes about 4 minutes to kill someone with a choke). Many times if you choke someone and think they are dead..(may have a small pulse) and can be revive? The brain need air...and blood to flow...to stay alive...cut it off..could be dangerous...those people who have half-brain ..need not worry....our friends who are forgetful...(Just 2 minutes? ) ....only kidding....Aloha
  22. Hello, Maybe you have reach a step higher in your training? Especially if it felt good. Trust your instincts on this one! ...sounds like a positive one. The goal of doing something over and over is to make it a part of us that will become a natural to do (without thinking). Like if you turn around and someone threw a ball at you? ...most likely catch it! (without thinking). Reflex is that part we all are trying to get too! See food? ..hand go up to reach and mouth is open! (all this without thinking)...done it so many times! When putting on pants...most of us automatic pull zipper up? ...but there are times we miss this! ...oops...a..a .... a your underwear is white? One will never know when we reach a very high level....it just happens...Aloha PS:Those who use the computor alot..do not need to look at the keys to press.....n..sume needds more train,,ing
  23. Hello, To: Sohan, You said it the best way! good ridences!.....Aloha
  24. Hello, Very well done! Enjoy your training...hopefully we will see you with more trophies in the future. Those who work harder than anyone else....will progress futher than anyone else. Congratutions .........Aloha
