Opinion on UFC
learning kempo-karate replied to Kajukenbopr's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Hello, Ufc and other's like it ,is for entertainment. UFC fighters are some of the best fighter in todays world. All these fights have rules, starting times, refrees, and can give up or refree's stopping and ending the fights. Yes NOT all fights go to the ground. Many are knock outs. UFC and other like it is fun to watch. ==================================== Remember REAL fights have NO rules,NO starting or ending time, No refrees, can be FAST and FURIOUS....and one can be killed. IN REAl FIGHTS: Any techniques can be use, eye gougeing, throat strikes, breaking necks, slapping ears, breaking anything, chokes to kill, and any weapons can be use, including biting, tearing, ripping and so on. ===================================== UFC is one of the closest tthing to real fighting, Im sure if they were fighting to the death....things would be very different. People love to see fights,(It's in our nature). UFC has rules...it needs them. and has it place for entertainments sports. JUST A SPORT .........Aloha -

Hello, Yes! Kajukenpo: Originate in Hawaii, combinations of Karate,Judo,Kenpo,Tang Soo Do,jujisu, and Boxing Many of the masters who form Kajukenpo learn there arts from Japanese,Okinawain',Chinses Martial artist. Parker Kempo and other kempo stylist came from here. Including ours (Univeral Kempo-karate SchoolSs. Wally jay was also from Hawaii and Kenneth Funakoshi. One will be surprise how many of the martial arts today came from Hawaii. ...........Yes we are in the Pacific regions. Hawaii always had many different type of martial arts. Many cames as plantation workers, Phillipines,Japan,Okinawa,China, and varies other countries too. Each one brought there own form of fighting. In time it was share and mix. Also the Hawaiians had there own art " Lula"? anyway ...Thank-you and Aloha -
Starting Karate, testing Info please!!!!!
learning kempo-karate replied to poisendhearts's topic in Karate
Hello, One more thing here. Throwing a punch? It will take a life time to be able to master this simple technique. Using the proper mechanics, proper breathing, proper foot steps..ball of the foot, the turning of the hips, pushing up on the legs, proper fist, hitting the tarket in the right spots, the follow thru, using full power, and learning the proper techniques to when to relax and when to tighten up. Using the right muscles and the correct muscles at each stage. Yes anyone can throw a punch....not everyone can throw it with maximun efficiency! Do we need too? NO ...but to perfect it.....it may take a life time. .....Aloha -
Starting Karate, testing Info please!!!!!
learning kempo-karate replied to poisendhearts's topic in Karate
Hello, Your Sensi will let you know when you are ready for testing. Just because you can do certain things...does'n mean you are ready. Most Sensi looks at the overall picture of your training and improvements made. Put in a require amount of time is important too! (it could be a 5-6 months or more for each promotions) varies school to school. Some schools you can earn a Black belt in two years, others require 5 years or more. (Ours is at least 5 years) promotions and ranks does not make you into a martial artist. It is just an indications of the level of improvements you made so far. This is the way many systems use to gauge your progress! (colors of belts). When you reach and test for Black belt? .....you will realize your REAL training is just beginning. (before than you were learning the basics) and as a Black belt....the learning will never stop....ultimate goal? is when you can do everything without thinking! ...like if someone threw a ball at you when you are not ready...but is able to catch it! ..only in martial arts it is more intense. A true martial artist will never get themselves in trouble situtions. Be Humble always...........Aloha -
Hello, One more thing. An orange belt does not have the experience and knowledge to be making and understanding of the kata's princlple ideas/ When you have been training for a large number of years....and is experience in the movements and techniques in the Kata's (it many purposes).......and have a better understanding on this. Then you may create your own version's ...........Just my thoughts on this! .......Aloha
-
Hello, From what I understand. Shotokan kata's are very traditional. Each Sensi will have there version on this. You should NOT change the Kata's form. Only time you will be allow to change it is, IF your Sensi allows it. or you are allow to form your own Kata's. ======================= In time? ...you will understand why Kata's were made, and how it does not apply to REAL fighting. Kata's is just a training excercise to teach you the fundamentals of your techniques. ===================== When you become a Black belt or a Sensi....than one might be able to change the forms. (if the organzition allows it).

Hello, How about? HAWAII ..... OKINAWA ........ALOHA -
Hello, Just my opinion here. Let it go....it was an honest mistake, those things do happen. On the next testing if she passes...give her a yellow belt. The testing is over BUT you can say to Parents of the YELLOW belt I give the wrong scores..but I will let the yellow be stay on..because he is showing improvements (be truthful). THIS DOES NOT NEED TO BE SAID! Time is the best way to heal things....in time the girl will earn a Yellow belt too! LET IT GO!!! ..........Aloha

Knocked down to White...
learning kempo-karate replied to Feathers of Doom's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Hello, Great suggestion from above. When in Rome do what the Rome's do, as the saying goes. When training in two different styles or more....Each school has there own ways of doing things...(you will have to learn to do it there way). You have to respect and do it there way...as far as the up rank (ranks telling you)...show respect...just be agreeable (nice). Then let it go before it becomes a problem for you. Those green belts (ego too)...are just trying to be helpful. If you do not like the way they train...LEAVE. As far as for rank in another style it stays in that style. YOU are not a black belt in this other style...be respectful and earn your way up! PS: Earn a black belt in Universal Kempo-Karate Earn a black belt in Shotokan karate Learning Judo (White belt here)..they also know I am a assistance in Instructor in Kempo. A black belt just tells what level of learning you have earn in that particular style. Always be honest with any New Systems/School you sign up for and what your background is. Yes you are a Black belt in one style...but it does not apply else where...just my thoughts on this......Aloha -
sidekicks
learning kempo-karate replied to Chris05's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Hello, Also side kicks can be done as a snap kick or thrust(push kick). No one kick is the answer for end all fighing. NEVER limit your arensal of weapons. Plus everyone is built differently...what works for one may not be as effective for the other person. and there is an opening for a side kick....USE IT! PS: Now which side is better? ...Right? left?...up? down? front? or back? Best to use the RIGHT way, or be LEFT out, raise the knee UP,kick DOWN,tarkets can be in the FRONT? or BACK? ...........Aloha from this SIDE of the world! -
Studio Chains
learning kempo-karate replied to classiccopy's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, Single school (Indepentant) or a large organizations has it's good points. I once belong to an Indepentant school...after teaching (our Sensi)for so long, he decide to just quit. We were left without a Teacher, and no one was train enough to continue. Today my son and I belong to a so call chain, (Universal Kempo-Karate School Association.) We have four school on the Big Island . Head quarters in the Island of Oahu, with many other branches all over the USA. We are lead by our Professor Martin T. Buell. Every year there is a Seminar for all the schools at Las Vegas. We always have new materials and training. You can train at any branch,or on vacation if a schooi is nearby...with permission..you can still train at those schools/branches. We had a College age student move to the east coast...He hook up with a Ukks branch there and was able to continune his training. Each Instructor is unique because of there backgrounds, all have to teach the same material set forth by the Professor, but they can add there own flavor too it. What is important...is you like and respect the Instructor, their training programs. It does not matter if it is Indepentant or a large organizations. Because if you are learning and improving your knowledge and skills...than you are a winner here. ..........Aloha -
Hello, It is wonderful to watch. On the streets for real fighting where there are NO rules, fast and furious, and anything goes. Will Caporiea work? ....not sure... but they do learn how to kick and punche too. They have some nice techniques and moves! It is hard to hit someone who is always moving like they do in Caporiea. One thing for sure...they will have more endurance and strength than an everyday person. We all enjoy the music and performance of Caporiea! That's for sure! .....Aloha

Getting older.
learning kempo-karate replied to Uechi Kid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, I will not tell you that I will be 55 years old. Because as long as you can and want to...the training will never stop. Yes we canno do things we did before...just accept what you can do. Teaching is one of the most important part today for me. Having things that affects the body...(.yes we must listen to our Doctor's advice, too) Is something we must learn to live with. Changes in our lives is a part of learning to live. If we must give up things we enjoy doing...than we must accept this.....You can still find another way to share and still enjoy some of the things you like to do. Our bodies and the genes we got from our parents is something that was given to you......sometimes are good stuffs...others not so good.. I have been diabetic and have High blood pressure (on medications). for along as I can remember.....Love training and help in teaching the classes. Enjoy every moment...be a excellant role model for others to follow...everyone has ONLY one body and life.....make the most of it.....Aloha PS: Many people do not like themselves...so they do drugs or get drunk thinking it will change there lives....sucide in the unconsious mind..... -
Hello, Most times we are quiet about our studies in the martial arts. Many of our students see us in our day times jobs or shopping and they say.."Hello Instructor or Hello Sensi" . Other times people ask because they heard you are training or is a Black belt. It is amazing how many people think you must be like "Bruce Lee". They think you can beat up any body? Just because you have a Black belt. ( I got three, my old one, my new one, and one I brought long ago for spare.) Today if you say you have a Black Belt....people become afraid of you? ...or think you can protect them? ......if they only knew the truth! .....Aloha

Hello, First your Instructor ask for your Help. The hit was not intentional. Accidents do happen in ALL sparring. Everyone could tell you did not mean it. Accept this and let it go (do not hold on to this problem). It is a good ideal to aim higher or hold back your kicks and punches more. This is good training for you. You are NOT the first person to hit someone younger. It happens alot of times in sparring (that why gear is important). You will improve in this area, and you will be more aware of your techniques. You are ask to help because your SENSI BELIEVES IN YOU! If you ask me if I ever hit a very young child? I be lying if I say NO...it has happen to us a few times, BUT every accident you get better and better in prevention. Will this happen again for YOU? Sure...but you know and everyone will know it was an accident.........NEVER QUIT.......Aloha PS: I am sure that girl learn a valuable lesson too!

Notes in class
learning kempo-karate replied to Shogun of Harlem's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, In our system...we have alot of materials to cover. We like when students take notes (Not in class time,before-during breaks -after class ended). Written ones. If we are ask? We do allow videos for Kata's and training techniques, use for home use only. We also let all the students know the materials is for there own use and not to be share with outside people (those that are not training with us). Those who take notes...are the smarter ones! They want to not miss anything, especially the new materials.........Aloha -
Hello, You should talk to your Sensi about this (In private). Suggest that both of you do not sparr with each, 2. have the Sensi ask the other person what is the problem or problems is and what he can do to help solve this? Have the Sensi ask this other person what he wants do about sparring with you? This guy might have an ego problem, not your rank but because he is bigger and feels shame to be hit by you! Since he is in close rank. Be the mature person here, everyone around you are aware of this guy since it has happen more than once...(acting in front of others too). It will not be easy since you train together often. Be the strong minded and act like an adult on this.....people will notice who is being childish.... Simile and always be nice...say " did I hurt you? and simile some more.....Aloha

Hello, Kata came about because they were teaching you movement and techniques skills. It has it purpose for excerise and practice certain techiques. If you see real figting and how fast it moves with NO rules, anything goes.....YOU WILL NEVER SEE KATA MOVEMENTS AND TECHNIQUES USE It was use to develop for skills as a slower level and proper way to throw techniques. That is why sparring and kata's are different and treated differently. Each teaches you a certain level of techniques. REAL fighting is fast and furious....NO limits on tarkets or techniques or weapons use around you. Is Kata usefull for real fighting....NO ! but for training it is useful. Traditions have a way of staying around. ........just my thoughts on this....Aloha

Hello, JUDO...you will find this a very effective art! Yes BJJ focus on the ground work, so does JUDO! BUT Judo is about takedowns and throws, the keys in Judo is taking your attacker OFF-balance and taking them to the ground with the throws. You will find those who practice against Judo guys rather not fight anyone with good Judo skills vs someone who does not. (coming from some BJJ.) Judo may be all you need? ........Aloha

Creating the perfect style
learning kempo-karate replied to b3n's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, Most of think the perfect styles is a combintions of different arts, exampe: Knowing boxing, judo, karate,BJJ,MMa and so on., a combinatons of all. Standup fighting skills ,takedowns, and ground skills. NO one will be perfect and NO one art is perfect.... but what will work on the streets could be just a simple technique or combiination of them. Most of the martial arts out there today can be more than enough to keep you out of trouble. Having a strong body and mind is just as important. The most successful martial artist are those who NEVER gets into a fighting situtions on the streets. HUMBLENESS AND AWARENESS and never being in the wrong places and time. Off course it is good to learn about takedowns and ground fighting as well as stand up fighting. Remember on the streets it is ANYTHING GOES...No rules...anyone can jump in and anyone can use any weapons on them or around them. NO time limits...it will be fast and furious....Are ready for this type of fighting? and can you go to the limits? .......Aloha -
Hello, The head is one of the best places to hit (knock-out someone). It also has some strong bones. Hitting the head : choice between fist and palms? Both can do damages, but the fist also has more chances of getting broken (wrist, finger joints) if hit incorrectly or wrong tarket. Heads are always moving. VS the palm strikes. We are taught both ways because each has it purpose and tarkets. Every techniques can be view as dangerous if done at the wrong time or tarkets. The fist can be and is a powerful weapon. Many times you can hit someone with your fist and NOTHING broken bones. Yet the next time you can break a joint. Is there a right or wrong on using the fist? NOPE...just choices and the fist does work.... As the saying goes...hit hard tarkets with the softer part of the body, and soft spots with the hard part. What is hard and what is soft? it it like cold and hot....choices...I prefer warm baths vs cold showers............Aloha
