It might be time to move this subject to a different thread, but on this topic I agree with you. That said, I also think you may live in a rougher areas than some of us. The increasing pressures of tourism on the island locals cause problems that are well documented. I don't know if that was a factor is this case. Your point is valid. You never know where or when danger could arise and must be ready. Hello, Hawaii a rougher area? like many places we have a nice neighborhoods and places you should not go too! Keep in mind at the same time...many of the martial art in the Mainland (USA) came from Hawaii. (Ed Parker kenpo, Kajukenpo,Funakoshi (Shotokan, Wally Jay's small circle jitijisu, and many others too...that spread from Hawaii. HAWAII A ROUGH PLACE TO LIVE? Remember as a tourist (anywhere in the world) ...if you were treated nice...you will remember as a nice vcaction. BUT if you were attack, rob, cheated, treated badly....you will remember it as a terrible place! ....everyone will have their own experiences...Have a nice day! ...........Aloha ( means Hello,good-bye,good luck, see you again). AH...LO..HA.........until we met again! -
Hello, Many of the kids in our Judo classes are members of the High School team....so they were taught the sport side. But not ever class was the same... there were times when the Sensi taught us the street side of JUDO....or he call it the dirty side of JUDO...mean stuff here.....That is why alot people say...Judo is more than you think it is....until you take Judo from the traditional ways....the more you will understand this.........Aloha

Hello, Just want to share this story. Have your heard of the person called the JUDO GOD? MR. Masahiko Kimura When he was a 13 yearold student (he was a rascal)...he did something to the teacher desk. The teacher caught him and give him scolding. He than want to beat up the teacher, BUT his friend said the Teacher is a 1st degree black belt in JUDO. SO the young man said I going to learn JUDO so I can beat him up. By age fifteen he was taking JUDO and doing 300 push-up per day and training 3 hours long. (Japan) Pre-World War 2. He was becoming a champion JUDOist. He started winning alot Judo tournments in Japan. Then he lost to 3 of the best master in JUDO. He wanted to give-up...but his friends talk him out it. Then he started doing 900 push-ups a day and train for 9 hours everyday. By doing this...he became UNBEABLE...No one could win against him....But the after the war...Japan change and he went into wrestling..and was ask to leave JUDO...He had a family to support. He is still consider in Japan as the JUDO GOD! You can become like him...just gotta do 900 push-up per day and train for 9 hours...off course his had natural abilities and the right body built for JUDO. Hope this will help with your push-ups...today there is so many varietions to them. This is for building the upper part of the body. ============================================== For the lower legs....(from Matt Fury Books) Just do 500 squats a day and it varitions too. ============================================= So to be better : Do push-up's (at least 100 per day and work your way to a 1000) and for squats..try a 100 per day till you reach 500). for myself...I try to do them as often as I can....pretty soon I will reach 12 per day(push-ups) and for squats....UM? ...maybe 14? ,...just kidding..........Aloha PS: Remember to become better...you must do the excerise's that will help you reach your goal...and than when you reach them..extend them more and more.....ONE day you will be able to do more than anyone else, and become the best by yourself.

Hello, Taking any type of illegal sustance is NOT good for you! If it was ?..than ALL doctors would prescribe them. Look at the reason WHY? you take drugs? Most people do not like something about themselves. Taking drugs is a form of self sucide. The problem is located in the Unconscious mind. Your belief of yourself for everything you do. ========================== What can we do? ...first you must accept who you are...your father and mother made you and you must accept the body you have. Your life style is because of your parents situtions. Money,riches,fame.....even those people have problems with drug. Accept yourself, be glad for what you have. LEARN: TO LIKE YOURSELF FIRST...this is the first change (everyday in the mirror...say: I like myself and I am making myself better by (fill in the blanks). I feel this NEW Change. I am getting better everday. By doing this everyday....this will help your unconscious mind believe in yourself. That you like yourself and are doing things to improve them. We all have a beliefs of what kind of a person we are in everything we do (the inconscious mind). What type of a martial artist, singer, worker, student, mother, father, son, sports player, listener, talker, everything in our life...we have an opinion of what type of person we are (in the unconscious mind) This can be change by reprograming the UNCONSCIOUS MIND! Read as much information from books and articles you can for self improvements.....tons of info here....take what applies to you. Everyone and Anyone can make changes..just got to believe you can! Just my thoughts here....People look at martial artist as role models. ARE you one of them with the right minds and roles. .........Aloha PS: The best know they are best..because they accept themselves for what they are and work harder than anyone else because they like themselves. If you really like yourself...you will do things in a positve way..

Hello, Ranks are progress reports and many of the students like to know how they are progressing. Yes! Ranks are unimportant when fighting in the streets. In the classrooms to the students, many find it important. Like going from the 1st grade to working your way to college, each step you earn...4th grade..10th grade..12 grade....is an important way to measure progress. Ranking works like that. Ranks also doesn't mean you become an expert....only you have met the minumun level to past. Most important part is....you have learn and is able to apply what you have learn. ..........Aloha -
Hello, UM? Just guessing here....maybe in the old days it meant be LOYAL to your own group. People who look for fights are NO different from those who Box,MMAs,martai art tournments....it was about proving oneselve is worthy amount others. (in the old days it meant to kill your opponent. (Like Musushi! and to live the life code of the Samurai's), which was known as been honorable. Being loyal to your leaders meant doing what they wanted you to do...even if it meant to kill women and childern. (Loyal to your leaders). Every groups had to have LOYAL followers in order to exsit as a group. This loyality was consider being honorable. Not sure if I am guessing right? ....but I hope this little bit here help you some? ....if not......that is alright! ..........just trying to see if we can help.....Aloha

Hello, Good point here! Just wanted to add this....In the real world for kids...especially the bullies in schools....they will ususally be bigger than most of us. Bullies like to pick on the smaller people and the weaker ones. From the experiences we have from students in our martial art classes...When they fought back....THEY WERE NEVER PICK ON AGAIN! Bullies (make trouble because they want attention), BUT are just afraid to get hurt from a fight. KIDS must learn to stand up to them..even if they lose in a fight. I know this is not the best answer to solve Bullling but it does WORK. .................Off course you want your child to TALK there way out of troubles...Aloha

Hello. Nice topic! Honor also means respect! NO man is perfect. Those who were not honorable, live there life that way. Remember there were also many honorable people in those periods as well as today. Our society is made of humans beings that were raise by all kinds and types of people. NOT everyone has excellant role models to follow. Even bad guys have their own codes of honor....look at the prisons today. ===============================================Honor , trustworthy,Humble, kind, generous, .....these people who have this qualities are not rare...just hard to notice at times. NO one is perfect...we all have our rough spots...I really believe most of us try to live our life in an honorable way. Trust: Once broken....you will never be 100% again..even if you did become trustworthy for the rest of your life, (you maybe forgiven..but your deeds will never be forgottan.) Honor means staying in a straight line, never crossing over the wrong side of life. Remember: It is very easy to lie, cheat and steal....it takes more effort to be honest, trusted, and honorable. Always be truthful...it will save you alot trouble afterwards if you lie. In the courts..if you lie once...anything you say afterwards cannot be trusted, because if you lie once...who can believe you are now telling the truths. (Once you cross that line..you will be forever...known for lieing) Those bad qualities are human weakness....which can be over come by being stronger in your beliefs of one self. One last thing here: If you do not like yourself? ....You will become weaker....BELIEVE IN YOURSELF....accept yourself and enviroments. You father and mother made you....one cannot change the body...but by accepting what you have and making the most of it...WILL MAKE YOU A STRONGER PERSON............................Aloha PS: Whew...some heavy thoughts here......be nice!

Hello, JUDO ....it will not hurt you. The first thing you need to learn is how to roll and fall. Before you ever get into takedowns and throwing. Judo is the basic aspect in allmost martial arts...learning to fall and how to land. Best thing is to try JUDO and experience it for your self. Maybe try for a month or two. I am sure you will stay with the program. You will learn and see how effective this gentle art is. You will also learn about ground work,(chokes, holds, locks and so on).....BEST to try for your self. .....just sign up and go.............Aloha Many Judo schools maybe set-up for sports side...but wait to you see the combat side....

Hello, I too like to collect any type of martial art books. Loren chistensen is one author worth reading (all his books for the modern day martial artist). If you have not read any..better find them..he is a must read books. Some of you mentions Loren books and off course "THE GIFT OF FEAR" is worth reading. Marc, the Animal,MacYoung books are interesting reading, (his experiences as a bouncer in some of the toughest bars.) MY flavoriate reading ,and read it several times, 900 pages long. (MUSASHI) ....Base on a true story of a famous Samurai. Everyone in Japan knowns the name MUSUSHI1 ...The person in the BOOK of FIVE RINGS. There are so many magazines on the martial arts...over the years I have collect many flavoriate short articles and save them in folder. Many times going back for research and studies to share with others. OH! one more book worth reading : VERBAL JUDO (require reading for the Kona police officers),also there are more books and authors on talking your way out of troubles......Aloha -

Hello, Not sure how to answer the above. NO two fights will be the same, nor end the same. The average person do not want to kill anyone or seriouly injury someone (the good guys here). Accidents do happen (when you kill someone). The bad guys they want to destroy you. Most of us will fight the same way in a real fight or just practicing. But in a real fight...(combat...snaping the neck, damaging strikes to the throat, and breaking limbs, are tarkets). We all train for the KILLING techniques. Most of us are NOT KILLERS. and have the killer instincts to go that far. (accidents happens). I guess it depends on the person who you are fighting, the situtions, the varibles of the attacker./attackers....will determine what you need to do, to survive. NOt every fight will you want to go to the limits! We train for three levels: To eacape (runaway), Control ( Locks, holds, take downs) and /Destroy methods (which has unlimited levels by it's self). Only when the time comes...you will know what you should do? Hopefully the correct one! NO one wants to go to Jail! Thank-you for sharing your thoughts. There will be always two sides for everything...both can be right? or wrong? ......BUT at least we can bring other ways to look at something......Aloha -
Hello, Just my thoughts on this! Offering classes to young college students is a great idea. It builds a stronger and more confident students. Getting any kind of excerise helps the mind and body. Today anyone can give a certificate or degrees anywhere and anytime. Have you seen those schools who offer (Earn a black belt in one year). There use to be near the Hawaii University, International Karate School). Today anyone can open any martial art school, Name it or call it anything they want too, and can promote themselves to any ranks. Today American has so many 10th Degrees. College is a great place for learning...it should not limit is self. I think JUDO Classes should be offer instead. If fact Judo classes should be offer to all the young kids in every school across America! It has been proven to give kids more confidents...less bullying, less injuries (learn to rolll and fall), also burns alot of energy which alot of kids need to do. The Hands on training is faster to learn. PS: Those who want to be promoted or raise to a 10th degree? ...I am now accepting : A LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY....For nice looking certificate , stateing your new rank and style. Add $10.00 more if you want a frame. Note: only guarrantee is the printing will be accurate...not neccessary correct. ...Aloha

Hello, If in a real street fight and fighting someone who you didn't want to fight but attacks you anyway....if you are able to throw or take them down and can stand up quicker? Use you kicks (stomping) on the ankles.....most times the other person will not be able to stand up or chase you! (a simple technique for woman to use if being rape or attack if they have a chance to do this). ============================ Be aware of your State laws. In Hawaii if cannot prove self-defense...any bones you break, you can be sue or charge a for medical bills and missing work days of the other person. (even if you were only trying to protect your self). Yes! The BAD GUYS have more rights. Learning where to hit/strike the body is part of our training. Learning to kill is a part of our art. Learning to break is part of our training. (most schools do not teach deadly techniques to younger kids). Be prepare for the other person...to strike you...and go for the KILL.....if your school do not prepare you for this? ......just make sure you have a will made as soon as possible. PS: Always be prepare for the worst...and hope things do not turn out bad. Prevention is better than cure....Knowing how to survival? ...takes practice and the learning never stops..........Aloha -
Hello, This is one of the best advice to give and hard to practice it. Most of us will get the adrenline feeling when we start...once we get started....we become more forcus, and a little more relax. Being in the relax state helps you perform better, and you will also be last tired, (once the body tense up..you will burn more energy.) A relaxed person also moves faster? Like going to the toilet....once relax...things move better! For alot people...movements or keeping moving is better than standing still. Learn to move side ways and at angles (forward and backwards). The best : always practice harder than the most of us. The more effort into the training....the better the results will be for you! Just one more push-up...one more sit-up...just one more time...everyday! The best athletic's usually train harder than anyone else...their belief in there abilities are LARGE. They know there are the best...and will train more often...an practice alot harder than anyone else. PS: YOU HAVE TO BELEIVE IN Y0URSELF FIRST! Everyone can improve themselves ....unless you do not like yourself?

Hello, As for the deaths from fightng. If you do your research on this? You will be surprise of the large numbers of people who dies each year. Those who are injury for life is larger. Man still has not learn? ...that fighting is not the answer for solving problems. Yet we do because of our EGO and Pride. Every country has someone fighting each other, religions fight each other, many countries have many tribes that live next door hate each other. Greece and Turkey hate each other...they have been fighting each other for hundreds of years. (it will never end) Why each generation teaches their kids to become like themselves...they teach to hate and fighting back is the answer for themselves. Martial arts came about...so each person can fight back and win. Asian wars....in many countries still going on.... How many people die in fights....endless....just check the records...Aloha -

Hello, These are the national statistic An average of 26,000 Americans die each year from stupid fights, sometimes as easy as being push down and hitting their head on the curb and dies. How many people die in street fights thousands of them each year...many times you do not hear about them. EGO's and Prides get too many people in trouble. Remember if you are fighting to the death.....most fighter/MMA will go for the killing techniques. IN the ring...you do not have to worry about someone digging your eye's out, or snapping your neck, ripping the throat. ( you are looking for the knock-out or sumissions only. If you think they would not fight differently? UM?......Best to ask the MMA fighters for this answer...they would really know and can tell us....Aloha -
Hello, It seems sometimes the most powerful kick? But there are other kicks that works better at taking an attacker out. The side kicks is good for keeping the attacker away (sometimes known as a push kick, if done that way). Very few people can throw a powerful side kick that ends a fight. (if you can side kick to head? ..this will work) The side kick has it place in fighting. But you have to change your stance and most people will see it coming. There are those who can throw it out quickly and not be seen. Most side kicks tarket the body. ( in a real fight..the knees) Alot of MMA do not use this....because it was found not to be very effective for their style of fighting. It has been use...but you will see very little damages done to the other person. (Not everyone can throw it with enough power and on the tarket they are aiming for.) I am glad to see you have notice this....MMA sometimes are good indicators of what may work most times. (keep in mind..there are fightng with rules to protect the fighters.) Watch especially for the same techniques that most of them use over and over! Many times it is the basis stuffs and simple techniques that works the best. If you and a friend is being chase by a BEAR....all you need to do is out run your friend. Learn to run faster!

Hello, I really enjoy reading most of the post. Keep in mind an average of 26,000 Americans die each year from Stupid fights...sometime getting push down and hit your head on the curbs, and die. Control you EGO'S and pride. Be humble. A well train martial artist always knows about awareness and avoiding any bad confrontations. They also learn to stay away from places that will get you into trouble. VERBAL JUDO is a great book to read! So is the Gift of Fear. The harder you train your mind and body...the easier it becomes to end a conflict quickly. Best to run/leave and not fight. Live longer that way....Aloha

Hello, Yes alot of martial schools do not teach "VERBAL Defense". Two books here you may want to read: VERBAL JUJO (Kona police department officers study this booK)...Plus there are several more authors who wrote on this subject on" Talking your way out of trouble." 2. The Gift of FEAR...a must read here. Deals with trusting your instincts, has alot of real stories, and how they can help you. Prevention is better than cure......Awarenees,avoidance and none fighting is ......will help increase your life span. Note: 26,000 people die (AVERAGES' A YEAR)from stupid fights, sometime just by being push down, hit the head on the curb and dies. (if only they walk away). Our EGO"S and pride gets in the way many times....LEARN TO BE HUMBLE! -
Hello, Please check the rules for this technique. See if they allow it to count.! OK....this is one that alot of people use because.( use your jab, back fist hit, extend the arm and leap or more forward quickly and to the right side of the other person. Some people leap forward. (Usually a head shot). This technique is usually thrown often...BECAUSE it works in the game of TAG! My Instructor's flavoriate hit for point sparring. Set it up....bliz in....leaping back fist here with the lead hand. Try this...and practice alot...wait for the right moment....you may enjoy this quick back fist! TAG! Another is the spinning back kick....step to the right(with lead of left foot) to move the other person to the to your left side and spin w/ a right leg spinning back kick.......gotta practice this alot........Aloha !

learning kempo-karate replied to true_practioner_of Kokoro's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, Ring fighting has rules....on the streets..NO rules..eye gouges, throat hits, you can break anything here...and no time limits..any thing can be use weapons...more than one person can jump in against you...they will keep hitting you to the end many times (the guys I know who came from gangs). Yes not all grapplers will shoot....most people fight standing up-first. Then it becomes an all out fight..that can go to the ground. As a train martial artist the goal is to end it quickly, to survival serious injuries, and stop the other person from harming anyone. It is fighting the person who wants to rob, rape, hurt you,has only one intent (kill you)....this type of fighing will be different and end different from the kids fighting on the streets. Most times they will keep hitting you over and over...even with clubs... As the years go by.....you will view fighting in a different way than you do now...for me I see things differently from most........Aloha PS: Off course NO two fights will be the same.....one day..you will face someone....and maybe NO second chance? ....than too late to learn? -
Hello, When learning from a master.....you, the beginner sometimes think they KNOW alot just because they move up in rank, and have been training for awhile. Yes alot of martial artist who train for a few years....begin to think they know it all. It takes years to master alot of the techniques and to make it flow in action. Your Sensi show you a Kata and expect you to one day to master it , in it's present form. ====================== Any one can throw a punch. Does it have to be done right? NO! But to hit with maxium power and proper body techniques will take a long time to learn. You must use the right breathing, the right muscles and the right time to relax to tense. Hip rotations, lifting on the ball of the feet (both sides), turning of the shoulders, to learn to punch thru the tarket. and to do this all the time. Can you figure what is your proper breathing and relaxing part of the body use? What muscles are use and if you can use the rigth muscles at the right time? with every punch? You will hear the term (it take's a life time to master just one technique) or to be perfect everytime......for every movement,techniques,breath... Just to master a turn with the proper skills.....and muscles, breaths, power, speed,balance,....just to make this perfect? ....all the time? ....most of never will....BUT that is goal...perfections! Does a orange belt have the right? and knowledge to make changes in the KATA's? =================================== Many of you will not understand what I am trying to say...that is OK In time your opinions may or may not change as you progress in your training and art. Our beliefs comes from our Sensi's and How we were taught. Home runs comes NOT from just strenght..but when every part of the body and bat gets it PERFECT. ( the right connections). ================================== Making this story real short. In china a young master wanted to fight and old master who in his younger days was the best around. The young master wanted to fight this old man to prove he was better. One day the young master cornor the old man in a restauant. The young man went to attack the Old master. The old master just duck...one punch to the solor plexes. Today the young master is paralize from the wrist down. The Old man just use a perfect technique to break the back bones of the young master. It is not about strenght..but proper and perfect body controls....Aloha

learning kempo-karate replied to true_practioner_of Kokoro's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, UM? Every art has there style of stances, forms, and movements. But on the streets when attack? ...everyone fights pretty much boxing stances and style of fighting. Yes, the grapplers will SHOOT for a takedowns. Why? because it is so natural for everyone to throw punches and fight standing up, until the fight goes to the ground. (which may or maynot happen). You will need to watch REAL fighting...not ring fighting. Nice thing about our opinions we may not agree many times...that is all right! NO two fights or encounters will be the same. Many fights end with one punch (sucker punches)......Aloha (as time goes on...sometimes opinion's changes) -
kicking in a fight
learning kempo-karate replied to Chris05's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hello, In a real street fight or any fight for your life? Real fights has NO rules, most times fast and furious, anything goes including using things around you for weapons. NO such thing as NOT kicking....Real fighting is not a gentlemans sport here....survival is most important thing. In a real fight anyone can jump in any time. Eye gouging, biting, ripping, breaking bones, strikes to the groin...are all tarkets that your attacter may use against you! Watch for chokes too! Kicks are some of the best weapons to use, also to keep the attacker away too! Anyone who thinks kicking is not right? ....Wake-up the other person may kick you! Do not limit your available weapons. In a real fight the other person may not stop attacking you or stop hitting until your body does not move anymore.....(because if we let you up...you may fight again) ....coming from people who have fought many times on the gang fights on the streets. They will use anything around too to hit you with...NO rules...just survival! Guns, knives, basebats, pipes, lumber, if around will be use against you....and you do not want to kick? .....Aloha PS: Kicking is a part of our martial arts training....NOT to use it? ...is foolish in a real fight. (if you have a chance or opening).
