  1. Perhaps one got a bruise in the course of learning a valuable lesson or while accomplishing something one thought he was unable to do. That might make the bruise something one would be proud of. Ed
  2. Nice, man! Who manufactured it? Ed
  3. What you state is what I have heard. Supposedly, sit-ups cause some sort of strain on or poor alignment of the spinal column in the course of doing them and crunches do not, or are much less severe than sit-ups. I wonder what a kinesiologist would have to say about this. Ed
  4. We definitely had fun. Unfortunately, he transfered to another school after one semester. We still keep in contact, though. Ed
  5. I have studied the following styles: - TSD for about 2 years waaaay back in the 1980's - Youn Wha Ryu TKD for 10 years - Kuk Sul Won for a little while (< a year) - Karate, informally for little while. I don't know which style, exactly, I studied with a Japanese exchange student Ed
  6. Hey, karatekid1975, that sounds great. Many moons ago I took TSD and really enjoyed it. Ed
  7. Thanks for the pictures. I like to get a glimpse of how other people do things. Ed

    Yoshikai

Back in the late 1980's my cousin took Yoshikai karate for a year or two. However, I neither see any Yoshikai dojo when I travel around nor do I hear much about it on these boards. I Googled it and found next to nothing. So what is the status of Yoshikai? Was it absorbed into some other karate organization? I just happened to be thinking about this and decided to tap the collective wisdom of KarateForums to satisfy my curiosity. Ed P.S. I did a search on KF and only came up with 4 instances of Yoshikai
  9. For black belt we have a written test covering philosophical and some historical content. Ed
  10. In my school we wear white uniforms up to brown belt and black uniforms from then on, unless one is a head instructor of a school. Then he/she wears a white top with black pants. I don't know why we do it this way, just always have. I guess I should ask my instructor why. Anyhow, I'm sort of partial to my black uniform. It is the cross over type, which is the only kind I have ever worn. Ed
  11. I haven't seen Cung Le in UFC, either. Would be interesting to see him on a UFC card, though! Ed
  12. It seems as though the test itself "captured your mind," so to speak. Try not to focus on the importance of the test (which can cause a lot of anxiety), and just focus on the technique(s) that you need to execute at that particular moment. Increased practice, as you say you are doing, is probably the best way to relieve testing anxiety. Ed
  13. Sorry to hear about your nephew. I hope his condition will improve without any surgery. Ed
  14. I agree with Justin Treadaway. I am a Christian and have been training in MA for years. Actually, two of the schools I have attended over the years have been in church buildings. I don't see any inherent conflict between the two. Ed
  15. Welcome to KF. Is that you in the video? Nice video, by the way. Ed
  16. I broke my pinky knuckle on my right hand years ago. I loss my normal range of motion with that finger. I went to the orthopedic doctor, he x-rayed, told me it was broken, and set it. It healed up and I have had no further problems. Ed
  17. I pointed a friend of mine, who had lived in Japan for 4 1/2 years, to that "24 Fighting Chickens" article. He read it and, though his not an MA practitioner, he agreed with the observations made within that article. Ed
  18. Yeah, Ive seen this happen before. Ed
  19. The BB of C really hit the nail on the head. Some people are naturally better at something than others. The "others," therefore, need to train harder. Also, as bushido_man said, recognizing you need to improve is the beginning of that improvement, just don't let the realization cause disillusionment. Ed
  20. I hope all goes well, bushido_man96 Ed
  21. I remember some years ago when I received my yellow belt in YWR-TKD that it was a bit longer than any other belt that I had worn before (or since, for that matter). I remember, when performing certain blocks or moving a particular way, that the ends of the belt would get caught on my arm. As I executed a move (usually happened with high blocks), it would pop me in the face! I remember testing and having to perform Palgue 2, which involves some high blocks, and having that belt smack me in the face several times! Anybody else have any humorous "wardrobe malfunctions?" Ed
  22. For BB at my school (Youn Wha Ryu TKD) we had to know the following forms: - Palgue 1-8 - Bassai - Koryo - Youn Wha Ryu eight-motion form - A nunchuck form of which I can't remember the name So that makes 12 in total Ed
  23. Welcome Kacards!
  24. I always write down my forms and draw a chart of the various directions in which it goes. Of course, you will still need to practice. Sometimes, even with it written down right in from of me, I still have trouble figuring out just how one moves flows into the next. Ed
