The Martial Arts in One Word
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to Patrick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Martial arts are passion Martial arts is life -
Poor you! I know what it's like to be out of training. Due to moving for university I haven't been able to formally train since July! I think I'm going crazy! I hope you feel better!
-
I just started University and the only club on campus is a wado club. It's a lot cheeper than any other would be and I can't find a Shotokan club anywhere. Anyways, the club's been recomended by a friend of mine, therefore it has credentials. My concern is the adaptability of Shotokan to Wado. I just got my purple belt before the summer and I don't want to begin a completely new style just yet. Does anyone know what the similarities or differences are? I'm going to try one class next week by the way, I just wanted to know in advance.

Height and Martial arts
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to NY_Karatedork's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm shorter than you I'm 5'. Though if you want to be picky (as I love to be) I'm 4'11 1/2" (for a funny fact my bf is over 6' ) I don't mind being short, it has disadvantages but I just have to adjust. The hard part is trying to kick head hight when your supposed to on some big tall guy, but you just work with your height. Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. -
Green Belt Test

Good luck! -
You know Bushido, that sounds rather insulting "you might want to get your head looked at" Seriously though it sounds like a concussion.

My best bruises/cuts are always from something stupid. I had a real wicked looking bruise on my knee but it was from tripping up the steps. For whatever reason I usually don't get too bruised during karate, just doing something stupid.
-
You might be right about that. Even the gals I know that LOVE contact don't brag about their bruises like us guys do. Then you've never met me. I always brag about my bruises, though I'm not quite sure why

Tha's for the ideas. I have a couple things that have not been totally answered but thanks for the ideas. And, just to correct you, we are the same rank. My main concern besides how to fight him is my own temper. When someone is coming at me like that, without control and with the intent to hurt, I find it hard to keep control of myself. I could, I suppose, let myself go at him like I'm fighting for my life, but I don't want this to turn into something like a street brawl but other than that I'm not sure I could beat him in a fight if he's being that rough.
-
No, not the way he was fighting. It wasn't just high intesity, it was that I was beating him and I guess he got frustrated and angry. His attacks weren't just hard and fast but meant to hurt. Like the ones that hit me had no control behind them at all. I fight the new Sensei sometimes and his attacks are just as hard and fast(er) but they are controlled. His definatly weren't.

I wasn't sure what subforum to put this in so my appologies if you feel it should be else where. Anyways, tonight at the dojo we worked on sparring for the upper belts. I was fighting a blue belt who is a semi good sparrer. After a time, he began to loose control and was able to throw hard, on target attacks at me. I stopped some of course but not all. I returned his attacks but didn't hurt him like he was trying to hurt be - I'm not as strong and when he lost control he was suddenly a really good fighter. Does anyone have tips for how to fight him? I know he needs to learn control but I thought that in the street someone might attack me like that. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hope you all don't mind me announcing it. I waited a bit over a year to grade because of multiple things such as missing classes and not being ready. The grading sylibus (sp?) changed a week before my grading so I was very unfamiliar with it, but I managed to pass And what's pretty cool is I now know what I really need to work on. Yay!

Things to avoid doing in a Dojo
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to elliotspirrett's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I did that during my grading. I have allergies and they make my voice crack at random times. To my horror, it cracked when I let out a loud kiai after an impressive attack. It ended up sounding very much like a mouse being stepped on. The other blue belt testing with me was having a hard time keeping a straight face. Never decided that the black belt infront of you is good for target practice. -
Ack!! I don't claim to be very knowledgeable when it comes to cars, but dang! Neither do I but I'm not that stupid. I can at least change a tire :

I don't quite equate getting hit in the breasts with getting hit in the groin. I think the groin is a lot more painful. For me, getting hit in the breasts doesn't hurt. It fact, I'd call it cushioning for any punches that catch my chest If you caught the top part maybe, but at least on me it's not at all painful. If she doesn't say anything about it then she is probably fine. If she looks(ed) uncomfortable then ask her, but otherwise just keep doing as your doing. I'd actually prefer if the males at the dojo didn't tell guys to "hit lower" on me because I'm a girl and they may brush my breasts. I don' t really care. In the dojo I'm just another karateka, "one of the guys" so I don't care at all. There's my mini-rant for the day.

Bushido's advice is good. For me, it's about not thinking. Of course, my sensei does tell me to pick my targets more so it's not like you should not think at all... but sometimes you just need to let your body do the word and not overthink. I haven't gotten the balance quite right yet, but just keep practicing and working on it and you will get better.

It's all in the Practitioner
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to wingedMonkey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think there are arguments for it being all about the practitioner. For example, there was this former dojo-mate who for years was pretty bad at karate. He was one of those ones who was a orange belt for 3 years - those kind of kids. The one's who never seem to figure outt he concepts and just stay at the same level. But, he worked pretty hard and now he's an awesome fighter. All due to his hardwork. Another point that says it's all about the person is instinct and reactions when fighting. While grading last weekend we had to do free sparring. My opponant managed to sweep me and without thinking I threw my fist out and punched as I fell (I gave him a good bruise ). I hadn't been taught that it was just my reaction. Someone else may have done something different some people would be too surprised to throw any counter. Attitude determination and instinct play a good part in how good or bad a martial artist is. However, there are some things that also make a difference. A good instructor, a good martial art and even other students play a part. Even a natural ma will be hampered by a horrible instructor or a scam ma. Likewise, if a person studied yoga for 10 years they probably couldn't beat a 10 year martial artist because the kind of training they did would not be effective in a fight. I did gymnastics for years, but that wasn't much use in a fight. Sure, I had flexibility and balance but the required training for ma wasn't there. For me it didn't come naturally like my reactions do after training. I think that the individual plays a large roll in their success or failure as a fighter but there are other factors as well. -
Training in "Street Clothes"
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to NinTai's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I agree about the tight clothing. I try to buy guys pants or shorts for extra movement. Though I do own "girl" jeans for work. I actually like flip flops though I know they don't protect my feet. I dislike shoes and flip flops are as close to walking around in bare feet as I get. If I had to fight in them I could quickly thrown them off (I've tried it). Perhaps I can aim when I kick them off and hit my attacker -
I have a cat. I would love to get another dog but that probably won't be happening

I've never heard. I know a couple police officers and I'll try to remember to ask them. That's interesting. I personally don't see the difference, but I'm not the law.I think it's because you can cause significantly more damage with a kick than with a punch. I don't think that can actually stick. I have never heard of it before. It may just be somebody talking without really knowing the situation. I'm not sure because some people can kick harder and do more damage than if they punched but others can't kick worth a darn but could do significant damage with a punch. It wouldn't be valid to me. No matter which body part did it I think courts would look at if the force was justified - not which body part did it.

Sparring Stances
dragonwarrior_keltyr replied to KarateEd's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Bushido, I think use a modified front stance, I'm not sure exactly how to describe it. I'd say it's a regular two steps deep maybe. I can see how using a backstance could help. One guy I have fought used it and threw killer kicks from his front leg. I couldn't do it but he sure could.
