  1. hopefully I don't repeat any of these. ... when you kick holes in doors trying to shut them with kicks I've never done that ... when you trip and autimatically do a shoulder roll ... you play 'spot the martial artist' in the local mall
  2. Haha, little kids can be quite funny (if they're not making us all do 100 pushups and situps for not lining up right). One time a little kids peed his pants because he was too afraid of sensei to ask to go to the bathroom. What I like is seeing them spar. It can be quite amusing.
  3. I'm not sure what style you do, but try to have your hip/hand timing down. That'll increase your efficiency and power. Try swinging your hand in a front stance in time to the turning of your hip to get the timing right and then try punching with hip rotation. Again, this is an exercise from karate but it might be applicable to you.
  4. I'm not as good at front splits as the russians but I can go down to the floor with my russian splits. To get better just do as Tef says, practice to your limit and it will slowely increase. Good luck!
  5. Or in my case since I'm so short, kick him in the shins so he's on the ground and I can reach his head
  6. Thanks for the welcome. And actually our club is a part of both Canadian Tsuruoka and the JKA.
  7. No kidding! Personally that would get me interested - I guess I'm just freakish that way lol, but that would scare a lot of people off.
  8. Hi all! I joined this site in september and have lurked around for a while trying to remember my password I am in my last year of high school and have studied shotokan karate for almost four years now I am a blue belt (hopeful of becoming a purple next grading). Other info... um.. I just came back this weekend from a Tsuruoka seminar in Medicine Hat which was amazing! Too bad I could only stay for one day. That's all for now!
  9. Well, for some odd reason this kick is one of my best - if not the best. I guess what really helped me improve the speed of the kick was practice. Try standing in a front stance (zenkutsu dachi) or fighting stance (fudo) and then lift your leg up to set position and slowely kick outward. Once it's out pull it back to set as fast as you can. If it helps think of kicking yourself in the butt when you pull it back This will also improve your balance. When you can pull it back to set it will be easy to step foreward or bring it back from there. Hope that helps
  10. Hm... well I only know the heians and takiyoku's as of yet but I would say heian nidan or heian godan - the jump is cool if it's right. Sanchin is cool but I don't know it well enough to do it on my own
  11. Even though a restraining order might not work or might escalate the problem I would still talk to authorities. With the authorities aware of the situation, if further trouble happens it will be easier to get legal justice brought on the guy. A couple other tips. As other said, stay in groups of people you trust. As well, keep aware of your surroundings while out and about. If he does try something you don't want to be caught by surprise. Another thing: bullies are normally cowards - they may not attack directly. Watch your back. If you eat in a public lunchroom keep an eye on your food at all times. I don't mean to sound dire, but it should be kept in mind.
  12. I don't think it's dumb at all. When working out at home I do light to medium speed/power kicks and punches or kata to warm up. In addition to warming me up it helps me determin my natural range without stretching. Without stretching I could probably kick about my neck height, which is pretty good, though my punching speed isn't as great without warmup. I guess my old gymnastics flexibility comes in handy with kicking
  13. I'd say to some people. I know one little kid in the dojo calls me scary. I'd say it's just because of the rep of martial arts, and movies. Martial artist can be portrayed as quite deadly.
  14. a few weeks ago we had a little shitzu run into the dogo, yapping frantically. I guess he just wanted to fight
