  1. - baked (or any kind) beans - garlic, though it's sure good if you kiai in your opponants face. - chili Add yours, and any funny stories relating to food and/or karate.
  2. I don't have much new to add. I think that there is room for abuse as there are in most things. However, a little bit of "tough love" doesn't harm a kid. Of course, a teacher should get to know the kids and know which ones are too sensitive to take a little bit of rough treatment - pushup punnishment, "yelling at" etc and only need a quite talking to - and which ones need the punnishment (you know the kids I"m thinking of... the cocky little ones lol)
  3. What is the name of your town? I could look to see if there are any SCA clubs near you. I'd rather not put that out in public. I'll pm it to ya.
  4. I can't say I've actually been in a all out fight, but I have thrown a few techniques. I don't remember them all but for one of them a guy who never really liked me much had grabbed my shirt, and I slipped back to get him closer than threw a low mae geri.
  5. yes! Sadly my computer doesn't like to run the site without crashing so I haven't been on in ages.
  6. I think it's more important for tradion and respect than anything else. Way back when you usually studied from one master and they were that, a master. So, I'd say yes, for respect of your sensei, and the art, ask.
  7. Don't hurt me No worries! I am no Chuck Norris! (or am I??) Man, back kicks are something I'm horrible at... that and breaking boards.... ow
  8. She's got good flexibility. I suspect she was in gymnastics. Some of those moves looked like she'd done some before. I did a few of those such as the splits and that arial in gymnastics. I agree though, she's lacking in spirit and power. If she gets that she'd be one heck of a fighter!
  9. Don't hurt me For a couple younger belts in the dojo I like the tickling technique but, I must say, I'm quite happy with my mawashi geri, it's one of my best techniques.
  10. Reminds me of one time after I'd changed my room around and got a new full length mirror. I woke up to someone staring at me, jumped out of bed into a fighting stance. Then I realized that the intruder was my mirror image
  11. For my family and I, it's either just the three of us (mom, dad and myself) or we have my grandparents over Christmas eve. We don't do too much, traditional pork tenderloin dinner Christmas eve and Turkey with the extended family. It's not much but always fun. Bushido: Glad to see people still remember that it is about God. Our church puts on a Christmas pagent, which I'll hopefully get to see. I also try to catch the nativity festival - it has a bunch of nativity sets, with different people/choirs singing and a couple videos and food in other rooms. Pretty cool and spiritual.
  12. That's how I got my kick good, but then I had to unlearn the arms part because I was dropping my arms while doing the kick
  13. My hair is waste length and if it's in a braid it makes a good weapon if the person's standing behind or two the side of me. One twitch of the head and they get hit Two black belts I know refer to my hair as my "secret weapon"
  14. (senerio 1) Well, I would be "the girlfriend". I'd assume my boyfriend, being the guy he is would try to reason with the other guys. He's not overly agreesive so I could bet on him dissuading the situation. If they were really looking for a fight he would be ready. But, knowing my protectiveness, I would destroy his manly pride by pushing him out of the way and having a go at the guys myself (senario 2) If I had my purse my pocket knife would be in hand and I would use it - if possible, depending on whether or not I realized the threat of the guys behind me. If not, I would play helpless and then strike fast and hard. Mostly I would use the element of surprise. Then I would run. As much as I have gotten better at MA, I know that it is unlikely that I can beat two such guys.
  15. I have the same problem.....the cursed baby-face! I don't think I could look tough if I tried. I need some scars on my face, or somehting! Try being 4'11, and baby faced, looking about 3-4 years younger than you are and generally being 'cute' (according to my friends anyways.lol). It really doesn't help your cause. However, I have been called scary by a couple MA guys in my dojo and by a couple friends who saw me angry. Who knows? Maybe it's because I'm a love to spar, rough type of person. Meh. If I can be scary, I'm sure you can
  16. Well, I am a girl so here's my two cents. I do realize there are differences but I dont' pay attention to the male/female differences. I see it more as size, weight, speed differences etc. I see myself as "one of the guys" and just fight. However, some of the guys are uncomfortable with treating a girl as an opponant. Actually, even with things like throws, and wrestling stuff I don't care if a guy accidently touches the wrong spot, I'm too focussed on what I'm doing. In the dojo, I don't distinguish between guys and girls really. One thing that actually annoys me is how when sparring the girls are always paired with girls and in other drills I am often paired with the little kids/younger belts. I understand that I am put with the kids or lower kyus to help them, but I find it is always me who works with 'em. So, in my case, it's not me who's uncomfortable but the people around me who can't ignore the male-female thing in the dojo.
  17. Trouble is that I live in a small town. As is, my dojo is in the small city 15 minutes away. As far as I know, the other MA schools in that city don't teach weapons. There are more in the big city but that would mean a 45 minute drive just for weapons classes. Sadly I don't have the time for that. @ Bushido: As said, it's not too big of a city, so I'm not sure if there would be anything. But I hadn't thought of it so I'll check it out!
  18. agreed
  19. I know it's not the best method. I think I forgot to mention that I've done a couple bo classes a long time ago but only two. I don't know if that will make any difference or not, I erally don't remember anything from them. Thanks for the suggestions!
  20. Would it help if the lady you were fighting gave you a good shot in the face? lol. Luckily in my dojo, the guys don't go easy on me because I'm a girl. Acutally, they seem to stay away from fighting me
  21. Hey hey hey thats my stratagey............. Great minds think alike. Your short like me I assume. I'm just under 5'.
  22. I'm interested in taking up weapons, starting with the Bo. Unfortunately, sempai who taught weapons at our dojo recently moved, leaving us without a teacher. Is there any books or websites which may help me get started? Thanks very much!
  23. Oh gosh! I haven't gone to many tournaments but I hate tournament lag! I was there at 9 and didn't fight until 4. By that time I was all worn out from the stress.
  24. 93.. I think I have bad mouse-eye coordination
  25. A brown belt was sparring with our sensei to show everyone how to sweep and breakfall. With every sweep his pants slipped lower and lower
