they should be reffered to separately, but they should also accept the fact that they both have a common ground. hell, just look at the similarities of the ITF patterns and shotokan kata. calling them the same is like saying that burger king and maccas is the same. they are both different but they are still both crappy hamburgers.

TKD and Thai boxing

the idea of mixing MA isnt really a new concept. JKD and MMA are pretty much reliant on it. -
Cross Training
Zorbasan replied to Lady Kitana's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
there are three choices another striking art. try one that concentrates on different aspects. from what i understand, kempo uses multiple quick techniques. so something like karate, which is kind of a 1 strike kill policy would be benificial. or, you could do a grappling art such as hapkido or jiu jitsu or even bjj third choice would be a weapons art. if your looking at practicality then something like kobudo or kali would be good cos the principles of the techniques taught can be applied to things you can find anywhere. or if you just want something cool to do, you could do an art that teaches weapons like katana, sai and nunchucks -

tell him that the instructor told you that he wanted to introduce other arts training into his school -
the problem with a self defence course is that it is usually a few hours. MA , and self defence require repitition so that the reaction is instant, ie you wont have to think about it. some people will take a 2 week 1 hour a day course and be filled with a pile of confidence that could actually prove dangerous if they were to get in to a situation.

trainig with lower/higher ranking students
Zorbasan replied to PlasmaShock's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i think a mixture of both is good. for senior belts, its good to train with senior belts cos they can push and push without the worry of the class being held up with the instruction that junior belts need. junior belt classes are good for them as they are able to have a full class that concentrates of the things they need to learn. but it is also good to mix it up a bit to gain diversity, seniors get to train with less experienced people which will help them work on control. juniors will lift when training with more senior players. -
wow, im not on for 3 days and 2 pages get added to a discussion.

kyokushin seems to me to be a fairly combative type of karate, kinda like a muy thai type thing.

yeh, both the instructors at my club have cross trained and even offer multiple arts at there school. not MMA tho, they are all seperate classes with seperate gradings etc. -
Very admirable. I don't think a lot of instructors would do this. You clearly had the student's interest in mind. all instructors should have their students best interests in mind. in fact, if an instructor allowed a student to train knowing that their course could aggravate and worsen an existing condition that the instructor is aware of, they will actually leave themselves open to a civil action.

yeh, courage is a key thing. it takes balls to move in on someone that is constantly attacking you. maybe try to use your strengths to your advantage. you say that you are pretty good at evasion. well, instead of evading sidesways and backwards, try moving in on the evasion, kindof at a diagonal. that way you will be close enough to score with a hand technique.

i just last night downloaded the videos of ITF forms that i learned ages ago and since forgotten. i endeavor to relearn and practice these on top of all the other kata i know from wtf and shotokan long live kata

i actually dont think that anyone can think that their MA is the best, despite how much you put into it. regardless of what art you do, there will always be benefit from doing another. which will help you become a well rounded artist. there are elements in some arts that arent in others, such as there is no ground work (or very little) in arts such as tkd and karate. if you only study one style, regardless of how good you are at that style, they may arise a situation that that art hasnt trained you for. thats my opinion

i think ego is a bigger one. most places charge monthly so if you dont come to a lesson a week it really doesnt make much difference to them. -

walk on left side, safe, right side safe, walk in middle *squish* just like grape you karate do yes, karate do no, karate do guess so *squish* just like grape. -
ah, a true martial artists can say that they feel the art they do is best for them. saying that it is best full stop is where the arrogance comes from, and thats what i beleive is against the MA 'code' or whatever.
