Things NOT to say to your instructor...
Shotokan-kez replied to Valithor's topic in Instructors and School Owners
:lol I also said once that the students didnt like him cos the class is bigger on wednesday when it's the assistant instructor, than his lesson on a monday! Luckily he saw this as a joke ppphhheeeeewwwww -
Quick question, Kerry, just to clarify if I understand right: are you saying that you should ask your instructor out of respect, or just tell them what you are doing out of respect? Not sure Brian think just so they know what you are doing, although i think i would go to him with my tail between my legs asking him It's the principle side of things, at the end of the day sensei's are not our mothers or fathers so i think yes respect them but how much?

Can't train on friday night sensei cos i'm going to the pub with my mates. I actually said this a few weeks ago and he was like "excuse me!" ooops -
Ahhhh Carolyn i really sympathasize with you there, i know all about that fairpack thing it's been all over the news and in the papers. But aren't sainsburys doing offers for people who lost out on fairpack? Maybe you could get involved in that and maybe get something back. There was one particular woman in the paper who lost hundreds of pounds and she was on benefits. She was saying that her christmas is cancelled this year...and i was like ooohhhhhh nooooooooo don't cancel christmas think of the children. Felt sorry for her. I have a set of multicoloured lights around my front door, they twinkle and make tunes and if my 2 year old boy turns them on once more i think i'll scream.

So is it all about arm strength then? To be able to do push ups?
-
Well i'm answering as a student and i do agree with many that have said you should out of respect. Not to ask persmission though and get his blessing but to just make him aware of what your doing. There are so many arts out there that i am interested in, like TKD, Aikido, and muay thai. But i do have a twinge of fear of putting it to my sensei, it's not that we don't have a good relationship it's just that sometimes he doesn't seem approachable.

Yay i'm with you karatekid, shotokan is tops we had a fab lesson last night with the kick pads, we got some newbies in (kiddies) and it was great watching them having a go...good luck with all your training

No Problem Brian
-
I'll go ahead and set one up for you in the CrossTraining forum since that's what it will be about. Oops i just set one up bearich in general martial arts
-
Yeah Fish that was my idea too, i'm hopefully grading for shodan in six months so i was waiting, don't my sensei thinking that just cos i got shodan i was going to give up his club and train elsewhere.
-
Yay...my first poll Thanks Bearich As i explained in a recent thread. Students at our dojo have to get permission to train elsewhere...do you think this is right or wrong? I personally don't mind because i don't think sensei would say no but i'm not aure i would like to be put in a situation where i ould have too

They are not actually always used, i haven't heard some of them, still its good to know them. Try breaking them down and saying them slowly. What i do with Ryan to get him to know them is say one from the list and then he has to perform the move. As you get more experience and more gradings you will become more familiar with them.
-
hehe yeah Laurie lets just do it and see what he says, can you imagine if i did an aikido or ju-jitsu move in class I'm still looking for a club to go watch but i also need to see about finances i'm a bit short at the moment. Yes Brian a poll would be good on the subject on weather you should ask the sensei permission to train elsewhere...i'm not sure how to set one up though, never done one before ...........hint hint

When there is music like that i just feel like they are dancing, yes her kicks and punches show some martial arts, but like i say..more like a dance, kinda takes the martial arts aspect out of it. Not that i would want to fight her though

Yeah i think you and your instructor handled it very well. At the the end of the day you were both bigger and more sensible people and you both know respect, he obviously doesn't so there you go, you both win! -
Haha everybody get Patrick lol

Hey good luck, whats your syllabus? -
I would need to speak to my sensei first before doing anything, because we need to ask his permission before training elsewhere as well as with him. I don't speak to him very much..he can be scary lol To be honest i'm still leaning towards Aikido but there doesnt seem to be many clubs in my area. I'm a bit weary of training in another style of karate, i'm experienced in shotokan just can't decide weather doing another style of karate would be worthwhile.

Oh i don't know, i thought her speed was ok, but i do agree with everyone else there wasn't much spirit or zanshin. Would love to be that flexible though lol
