  1. Both guys seemed very quick. Each time one would make a feinting motion, it really seemed to draw a reaction out of the other. They bounced a lot, too. Overall, it was fun to watch.
  2. Are you currently training in a Kyokushin dojo? If so, you should talk with your instructor, and see if he can get you lined up with some of the names that you have mentioned, or someone who knows them, or somewhere down the line. From there, you should be able to learn something about it. I hope you find what you are looking for. Good luck, and welcome to the Forums.
  3. This is a good question. I wonder this myself. I think that it is necessary to have a reason behind the tradition, if you really are to consider holding on to it.
  4. Next week (Championship weekend) Pittsburg Philidelphia
  5. It looks like the reviews are fairly mixed there. I didn't read through all of them, but I didn't notice many that ended up at the 100 total. I'll give it a go, anyways.
  6. tallgeese: Thanks for the replies. Our gym does have an assisted pull-up machine, but it feels like it doesn't allow for the full range...at the end position, my chin is still below the bar line. In the end, it sounds like I need a day in the gym to focus on my back more. As I am not great at pull-ups yet, do you recommend a method for me to focus on as a beginner: hands out, hands in, shoulder wide grip, or wider grip? 1-12-09 Chest/triceps Seated chest: 130x15, 170x10, 210x8, 270x2 Vertical butterfly: 100x12, 115x10, 130x6 Triceps push-down: 105x10, 120x6, 6 Biceps dumbell curls: 25x10, 30x6, 35x4 Abs Cable crunches: 105x20, 15, 15 Cable trunk twists: 70x10x3 Cardio: bike for around 15 minutes.
  7. John: You have offered a lot of good information. Thank you for sharing it. When you mention the Training Log thread, I figure that my entries are probably some of them that you are alluding to, as I don't tend to make a lot gains in the weight room when it comes to strength training, and I am just beginning to get into some cardio work. My question for you is, what do you recommend I look at to bring my strength gains up more? I know that I haven't made signficant gains, and I would like to. I don't have a lot of time to spend in the gym, but I want to make my time worth while. Tallgeese speaks highly of crossfit, but I haven't looked into it yet. I am interested in both stength and muscular endurance. As for the cardio, at this point I am just trying to do sustained periods of training. Running sucks for me, but I do like the bike. Suggestions are always appreciated.
  8. I agree. It just isn't always feasible to have an instructor at one's disposal, especially as rank and experience get higher and higher.
  9. No, I have not. Where can I track one down at? Are they readily available, or out of print?
  10. Hey, Killer. For the most part, I just listed teaching guidelines that I have used or been taught over time. For the most part, though, I list the importance of being able to transition out of the stance easily and comfortably as being of prior importance.
  11. I have seen some of the joint manipulation techniques that work well with one hand or two holding on. After a while, you start to see them run together. My DT partner and I use the idea that the wrist grab is a starting point for learning the technique. Once you learn it, you move on to other applications of it. The key is, to move on.
  12. This can be tough at times. Perhaps the instructor can't train full-time with his own instructor. For example, my instructor's instructor lives 4 hours away. Hard to train under him on a regular basis. But, he still does go to his instructor's classes at times. And sometimes, the instructor's death can obviously put an end to this. So then, something else has to be done.
  13. I could start my own style tomorrow, and then teach it to someone else. That person could then trace his "roots." So that should work, right?
  14. There was a girl in a TKD college class that I taught years ago, who decided to go to a few parties. Well, at said parties, she would drink said "good stuff," and become able to do the splits! However, she always regretted doing that stunt afterwards, when she was sober.

  18. I really like his attitude about putting on a good fight for the fans and the show. It shows that they aren't all that self-serving.
  19. The worsty I've had was a pulled hamstring.
  20. Thanks. Are these good if you can't get a regular rep in yet? What else is good for developing those pull-up muscles, specifically?
  21. If your main focus is cardio, I'd try to give it 30 to 40 minutes per session. Then, do some ab work. There are so many ways of training out there that you can probably find one that fits your schedule. Its just a matter of sifting through it all.
  22. I actually just competed in a tourny this fall and tied another competitor they do drop the high and low scores and if you tied you may do the same form or choose another one and then after we were done we had to turn around and the judges choose who one. When we did tiebreakers, the two would go at the same time again, but we would have to stick with our first form. Then, instead of a score, the judges just pointed in the direction of the winner. I don't mind this method at all.
  23. I think you nailed it here. Nobody likes to lose, but more and more, I think we see less accountability on the part of parents or the competitors. Instead of being good sports, they focus more on how "my kid got screwed..."
  24. Not a TSD guy myself, but I do have his book, and I really think it is a great text. I would like to have a chance to look into a TSD school sometime, but there are none in my area. Anywho, if you haven't checked out his book, you should do so. Its a touch pricey, but still well put together.
