  1. As you mention this, I had noticed that there seemed to be several masters that had died from some kind of cancer; Bong Soo Hon, Gen. Choi (I think), and H.U. Lee of the ATA. It just seems odd that people who spend their lives in healthy activities end up dying this way. I think you just chalk it up to coincidence.
  2. This would be interesting to see. The only things I have ever heard about Man were the few remarks I had read about him from Bruce Lee and a few others spots here and there. I'd be interested to learn more.
  3. I'm 31. Still pretty new to that division, I guess.
  4. Although I can't argue that this isn't a good point to take into consideration, I don't think it is something that is feasable for everyone to achieve. Not for 10 years, anyway. I did some competing, and I'm willing to admit that I wasn't ever that great at it. But I gave it a go, but not for 10 years. However, I still feel that I have the ability to pass on some important aspects of training for sparring, even if it is for point TKD sparring.
  5. If you can compare your skill level with the newcomers to the class, and can notice a significant difference, and you can compare your skill levels to those of the instructor, and notice your improvement, then I think that is a step in the right direction, if that makes sense. Noticeable improvement in skill level and physical abilities, along with concepts of how to apply things.
  6. How many of them can we really guarantee have gone totally unchanged for that amount of time?
  7. Congrats, Kez! Its good to see you re-appear.
  8. I don't agree with the rank timeline, either. Not a good sign, to me.
  9. That sucks, Keri. Hopefully, they get you lined out real soon, so you can get back to life. Being sick just plain sucks.
  10. What are these? 1-8-09 FL Front kicks: 5 sets of 5 on each leg. I did these while at work; its about the only kick I can do decently while in uniform. Pre-TKD class warm-up BL Front kick: 3x5 each leg. BL Round kick: 3x5 each leg. BL Side kick: 3x5 each leg. When kicking with the left leg, I had some trouble with the balance. I was hitching, or catching somewhere during the turn. I think it might have something to do with the pivot, but I'm not for sure yet. I'll be working on it. BL Front kick on Powerline: 2x5 each leg. I got pretty good thrust out of them. BL Round kick on Powerline: 2x5 each leg. TKD class: 6:00 - 7:00. Tonight was a small class, but I felt good. We did a few kicking drills with the Blasters at the end of class, which was a nice change. Some classes like that would be great. Orientation: 7:00 - 7:30. I hadn't done one of these for a while, so it was kind of nice, for a change. It was only his second orientation, so we stayed pretty simple with stance walking, and doing a few down blocks and punching.
  11. I would very hesitant to allow that. Although we spar "semi-contact" you get hit pretty hard, I know a guy who accidently took a kick to the groin and his cup cracked. Also if you catch it sideways it can be pretty nasty too. Us women don't like get kicked there either! Years ago, when my dad was a TKD tournament competitor, groin kicks were allowed, hands to the head were allowed, and sweeps followed by a ground attack were allowed. Its all a different ball game now. I think that those rules would really open up a lot more options for fighters, and would perhaps level out the playing field a bit against fighters with height differences.
  12. In the TKD tournaments that I have been to, grabs and holds have not been allowed. The one we might get away with is hooking the foot on a side kick, and then winging it away to yank them off balance. I would like to spar sometime with those kinds of rules, just to shake things up a bit.
  13. I tend to favor my right side forward. When I started out, I was left side forward. Then, I moved to my strong side forward, and tried to balance the two. Now, I have noticed that I have to work more on my weak side forward to get the balance back.
  14. In regards to this statement here, I think it is important to emphasize that training shouldn't always be about the next testing, or earning the next belt. Instead, concentrate on the quality of what you are learning, and work with it in different applications. Really pick it apart, and put back together, then start back at the bottom, and work your way back up. Rank isn't so much what is important, as is what and how you learn. Since you won't be stuck in a curriculum while self-training, spend time to focus on what you think will help you the most.
  15. Hello, Please post your picks for this event, as part of KarateForums.com MMA Picks, as a reply to this thread. The fight card is below. You may choose both the match winner and the method of winning (either submission, knockout/technical knockout or decision). For example, if you'd like to select Bruce Lee to win by submission, you could say "Bruce Lee, Submission" or "Bruce Lee, Sub". "Sub" or "S" can be used as shorthand for submission, KO can be used for knockout/technical knockout, which are considered the same thing as far as these picks are concerned and "Dec" or "D" can be used for a win by decision. Even if you don't know much about a fighter or have no idea about the method, you are encouraged to pick a winner and method in all matches to maximize your chances of winning. 19. I've got Panther, Giants in a close one, Ravens, and Steelers (I think..)
  20. I am currently in a holding patter with three books: 1. Deep Fathom by James Rollins. This is the one I am concentrating on for the most part right now; my pleasure reading. I have read a lot of fiction lately, kind of re-discovering it. And I'm loving it... 2. The TaeGuek Cipher by Simon John O'Neill. Pretty good read; its an interesting take on the self-defense applications of the main set of WTF colored belt forms. 3. Total Aikido by Gozo Shioda. This is a pretty complex Aikido text, and I am hoping that as I go along with my Aikido lessons, that more and more of this book will open up to me.
  21. That should make for a good fight. I think White should set it up.
  22. The thing about that, though, is that there are two other titles out there that he isn't holding right now. If he really wants to legitimize himself, he would work toward unifying the titles.
  23. I'm not claiming that its right or wrong; just putting it out there.
  24. This is excellent advise. To expand on that a little, if you don't know an answer to a question, don't be afraid to admit that you don't know. Along with that, don't be afraid to tell them that you will do what you can to find out the answer, either. Be honest, with yourself, and your students.
