That's pretty cool. I'll bet it took forever to complete.

Wow! That is funny!

Week 4, Day 2: 20, 25, 17 (needed 20), 20, 20 (needed at least 28). This was a rough one. I'm not sure how I'll finish out the week. I may try this set again, and then do an exhaustion test, and back up to week 3.

The Martial Artists' Training Log

1-27-09 TKD class: 6:00 - 7:00. I had an issue in class tonight. During basics, we do a crossover side kick with the front leg; we begin in a sitting stance, cross the back foot over in front of the front leg, then pick up what was the front leg, chamber, and side kick. So here's the deal.... One class last semester, the instructor made a note to the lower ranks in class not to watch me do the kick, because I was not getting the chamber turned all the way over (more like a snap kick as opposed to the thrusting kick it is supposed to be). After that class, I asked him about it, and I have been working to correct it ever since. When I chamber the leg to kick, I bring the leg up and pivot on my base foot, chambering the kicking leg up like I am going to front kick in the opposite direction. So, it ends up being like a back kick. In class tonight, the instructor got onto me because I was not throwing my lead arm out with the side kick (which I think is bad practice anyway, but what do I know...). So, he had me do a few more to get it right. I still couldn't throw the arm out, because my body is pretty much not facing the side, it is facing more back. I told him I can't get the arm out, and he said it was because my body was going back and down, like a back kick. So, I'm not really sure what frickin' kick he wants me to do here. I'm still breaking the kick down a lot more than any of the other lower ranks in the class; even some of the black belts. Its hard to do with a lot of speed, because this technique is mainly a technique builder, working on pivot, leg chamber position, etc. It really exaggerates the movements. So, I was a bit frustrated with the whole deal. On Monday morning, I may ask him which kick it is he wants me to be doing. 1-28-09 100 push-ups Week 4, Day 2: 20, 25, 17 (needed 20), 20, 20 (needed 25). I guess I will have to do this week again. I'm not sure if I should back track, or try to finish out the week. At the end of the week, another exhaustion test is supposed to be done. I could go ahead and do that, then start back at week 3, and work back up. Cardio: rode the bike for 25 minutes, then stretched. -
I agree with Killer, to an extent. There is nothing wrong with being part of an organization. Benefits include standardization of technique and requirements, and availability of higher ranks to promote, along with certification within the organization as you get promoted.

It may help to wean them into it. Start off with more protection, and as you go along, remove some of the protective equipment. Gradually, they should get used to it. Another important thing to keep in mind is to not just throw them to the wolves, i.e., sending the fresh meat in to spar just by telling them the rules. Work some skill drills with them first, that get them used to some strategic ideas for blocking, moving, and countering against certain techniques. You can do these with contact, too. This way, they gain some confidence, and don't have to worry about covering all the time.

Using the lunge punch is part of what takes away from the usefulness of one-steps, in my opinion. You don't get attacked like that. You are also not likely to be attacked from that distance. They can be used well to introduce the tool, but eventually, the attacks must be changed, in order to improve and develop more useful skills.

How do they portray the fact that this amount of pressure will cause the heart to stop? Have they tried it, and then recussitated someone? Or is it based off other data? -

I agree. Sometimes, it is taken too far. -

I just received Taekwondo: A Killing Art in the mail. I'm looking forward to checking out the history in it. It sounds like it gets away from the "ancient history" that is propogated as TKD.

What makes the Hindu push-up better than the regular push-up? If you're really into tough stuff, you can do knuckle push-ups on the floor where you twist the wrists at the end, like the perfect push-up does. If you really want that twist....

Ouch! That's crazy! I don't know if I could justify the cost there.... -
We use one-steps in our training, but I don't like anything about it. We have around 7 one-steps to learn per belt level, counting the high and low ranks together (lo orange, hi orange). However, they are all done against the straight punch with the right hand. The one-steps we do as higher ranks also tend to get a bit flashy, and wouldn't be very practical for SD purposes. I don't think that learning tons of one-steps is the best route to take in learning effective SD. If you have over 1000 sequences to choose from, when the time comes, your mind has to rifle through all those files to find the one that fits. I would rather train response strategies, like tallgees mentions, as opposed to learning tons of "if this, do that" defenses. I have an article pending on how I think one-step training should progress in a curriculum, but it doesn't happen at my school. I think that they can be a good tool, but they have to be used correctly.

I have heard that a blow to the top of the head could cause some serious damage, but I don't know for sure. I have seen the Fight Science show. I was excited to see it, but when I did see it, was very disappointed in it. There still isn't much to go on to prove the worth of the "dim mak" techniques. -
Nice story, Shorikid. Thanks for sharing that.

Wearing Gi outside of Dojo?
bushido_man96 replied to Seija's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Although we, as practicing Martial Artists, might not see the difference, the general public does. Not many would know, or care, that it is traditional Japanese garb. It looks out of place to most, and thus, can be a cause for attention. Some good, and some bad. -
Held up with a knife at your throat
bushido_man96 replied to ThisMyUsername's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, I’m not sure I would yell, either. If they do get startled, it could send that knife into you, as opposed to away from you. Yelling as you gain control might be a better idea. I wouldn’t want to grab the blade, either. If your hand gets cut deep enough, then you can forget about grabbing anything else with it for a while. Then you take away one of your own tools to defend yourself with.
