42 is pretty old to be competing professionally. It's probably not a reflection on his style, but more so a reflection of dealing with younger competition.

4th degree black in Taekwondo. I was also awarded a black belt and a certificate by a good friend of mine who put together a self-defense system that is heavy on LEO defensive tactics and women's self-defense. I think I earned a yellow belt in Aikido, and worked up to brown belt rank in Combat Hapkido, both years ago. I've also earned certifications in GRACIE and Police Krav Maga courses, both LEO-focused DT courses.

It's always refreshing to see some new material. Do you like the applications and how they work? That Saturday sounded like a really fun day of training!

5/30/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 185x5, 260x3, 330x1, 372.5x5, 330x5, 330x5. Press: 45x5x2, 85x5, 120x1, 150x1, 172.5x5, 172.5x5, 172.5x5, 172.5x5, 172.5x4, 172.5x3. Failed on to get 5 on the last set of press. Rested briefly, got back under it, and did a set of 3. The squat is starting to get really, really hard. The squat anxiety is real. -

5/24/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 190x5, 265x3, 340x1, 385x5. Pin Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 115x3, 145x3, 145x3, 145x3, 145x3, 145x3. Lying Triceps Extensions: 60x10, 60x10, 60x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. Another PR on deadlift. This time, the set seemed to go pretty good. Practice on the pin press is making it better. Hopefully, in a few more weeks, I've got the weight up to where the stress is actually contributing to progress. 5/26/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 185x5, 260x3, 330x1, 370x5, 330x5, 330x5. Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x3, 165x1, 181x1, 181x1, 182x1, 183x1, 183x1, 184x1, 185x1, 186x1, 186x1, 186x1. Lat Pull-downs: 157.5x10, 157.5x10, 157.5x10. I pushed the heavy press day up to 10 singles; 186 was my last PR before I had to change things up. 5/27/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 275x1, 325x5, 325x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 115x5, 155x5, 205x5, 225x5. Lying Triceps Extensions: 62.5x10, 62.5x10, 62.5x10. Pushed all the warmup sets on bench to 5 reps each. Since weight seems to be the limiting factor, tinkering with the volume a little bit. -
Do you have a personal fitness challenge right now?
bushido_man96 replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in Health and Fitness
Cool to see you considering a log, DarthPenguin. I want you to know, however, that it is not "my log." It's a thread I started for anyone and everyone to share their training. Somewhere along the way, others dropped off. So, if you feel so inclined, please feel free to post your training log along with mine! -
I agree with the bold, very much. It seems to me over the course of time, especially in the practice of the more "traditional" styles, stance work is too involved in holding static positions, and worry about the "aesthetics" of the movements. Stepping into a stance ends up being seen as a "stopping point," when it's more likely a point of power transition or movement into a recovery position.
-
Each situation is different. If someone is actively trying to strike me, I probably block and counter, and my goal is to eventually work to detain them. I don't want to have a "fair fight" with anyone, so in the process, the goal is to move to either of the flanks or to the back, so I can have more weapons and targets available than they can.

and the militaries that have people teaching with no combat experience tend to be trash at war when they finally get a taste of it….there’s a pretty good example of that going on right now…I’ve never seen a boxing coach who didn’t have at least a few fights/smokers on their record. How successful are those coaches? angelo dundee never fought, he was ali's coach terry edwards never fought, yet was an excellent coach cus demato, tysons coach, 0-2 record there are many others who either never fought or werent very good, but knew the mechanics of fighting at a higher level than most actual fighters. as far as the military is concerned, most of the leaders come from officer candidate school and other leadership courses/schools within the military. before the middle eastern conflicts the US military had reached a point where most leaders had not seen any combat, yet we were still one of the greatest militaries in the world. even now there are many, many, leaders within our own units who have not seen war. yet are fully capable of leading and teaching the units they command. How many other great fighters did they "produce?" When you get into the professional levels of competition, it's hard to tell which coaches are good, and which ones are made to look good by the talent of their athletes.

5/20/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 275x1, 320x5, 320x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 115x5, 155x5, 205x3, 225x5. Lying Triceps Extensions: 57.5x10, 57.5x10, 57.5x10 Stretch: quads, glutes, hams. 5/23/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 185x5, 250x3, 325x1, 367.5x1, 5, 325x5, 325x5. Press: 45x5x2, 75x5, 105x3, 140x2, 170.5x4, 170.5x5, 170.5x5, 170.5x5, 170.5x5, 170.5x5. Lat Pull-downs: 155x10, 155x10, 155x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. This was a trying day in the gym. First work set of squats, I hit rep 1, then got forward on my toes in rep 2, couldn't recover it, and fell forward into the rack. My buddy helped me raise it back up, and after a few minutes rest, got back under it, and got a full set of 5. On press, I failed rep 5 on the first set, but tried to put it up twice. Other 4 sets went to 5, so I did one more set of 5 to round it out. -
The karate and Kung Fu that makes Tang Soo Do?
bushido_man96 replied to Himokiri Karate's topic in Karate
I honestly don't see much more Kung Fu influence in it than is in most other Karate styles. I also think there tends to be a desire to believe that there is more Kung Fu influence than there actually is. As far as the Taekkyon influence goes, I don't believe there is much Taekkyon influence to be found in TSD or TKD. Perhaps the inclination to do spinning and jumping kicks stem from Taekkyon, but not much more than that, and you don't see much of that in many of the traditional forms. -
In my TKD school, we have our "basics" for warmups, in which we do the striking going forward and backward in stances, and of course the "blocking" going forward and backward in stances. It's all just done as technique work, with nothing ever really applied to it. I've had to dig for application work on my own. When I train for defensive tactics, I rarely, if ever, teach my students to go backwards. At most, maybe a drop step with one foot to get into a good defensive stance and perhaps blocking then, but otherwise, I am not a proponent of backing up, at all.

5/17/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 190x5, 265x3, 340x1, 380x5. Pin Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 115x2, 142.5x3, 142.5x3, 142.5x3, 142.5x3, 142.5x3. This set of deadlifts felt better than the week before, which is encouraging as it keeps going up. Getting more reps of the pin press is helping. 5/19/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 185x5, 250x3, 325x1, 365x5, 325x5, 325x5. Press: 45x5x2, 95x5, 135x1, 165x1, 180x1, 180x1, 181x1, 181x1, 182x1, 183x1, 184x1. Lat Pull-downs: 152.5x10, 152.5x10, 152.5x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. -

Happy Birthday KF! So much has happened, and seeing this community grow has been a great pleasure. So many good people have come and gone, and still remain today. I don't know what I'd do without KF. -
I've seen the ads for this, and I watched the cartoon as a kid. It's interesting, but I'm not so sure it will live up to expectations.

Congratulations, Aurik! All that hard work is paying dividends!

don’t know what professors you’ve delt with, but all of mine have actually done the stuff they teach.Same with my gf… Criminal justice majors who have never done anything within the justice system, like law enforcement and such. But teach courses on such subjects as community policing. I think this can tend to happen in accounting as well, and business courses. They never do any actual accounting, or have ever actually run a business, but teach courses on it.

These are both good ideas!

Thank you, Bob! The encouragement is always helpful! 5/13/2022 Strength Training Deadlifts: 135x5, 185x5, 225x3, 275x1, 315x5, 315x5. Bench Press: 45x5x2, 115x5, 155x5, 205x2, 225x5. Lying Triceps Extensions: 55x10, 55x10, 55x10. 5/16/2022 Strength Training Squats: 45x5x2, 180x5, 250x3, 325x1, 362.5x5, 362x5x5, 362.5x5. Press: 45x5x2, 75x5, 105x3, 140x1, 169x5, 169x4, 169x5, 169x5, 169x5, 169x3. Lat Pull-downs: 150x10, 150x10, 150x10. Stretch: hams, quads, glutes. Work set on squats felt good. Nice and smooth, and no shifting onto the toes. Second set of press was a horrible one. Got out of the slot on the first rep, and lost balance on 2 more of the reps. Really took a lot out of me. Rested, and got the remaining sets, and did another set of 3 reps to get them all in. Going to add weight to the next workout. -

I haven't watched the Boba Fett series yet. I think Kenobi should be a fun one, depending on what it is they are attempting to do with him.
