  1. I'm going to buy a punch bag and I don't know what the best brand is and whats is good quality and what isn't. I have no idea on what to look for in a punce bag, oh and remember I'm from England so preferably a website or item that delivers to England or I could purchus in england. I'm also looking for a paddle that you can attach to a wall. 2. I have decided that I'm gonna buy a 6 ft punch bag and throw in a paddle with it. 15 kg is enough for me anyway I think. I'v only used my dumbells to acheive my muscular bulk without using barbells. The only reasen for using barbells is that you can load more weight on to them. I'll save barbells for when my weights really get to easy for me.
  3. There are 2 ways to lift weights and thats to bulk up or to build speed and strengh. I am not intersted in bulking up I am actually trying to lose a lot of muscular bulk which I had been training for over the years which I want to get rid of to be more agaile and to build up more speed. I am doing plyometrics at the moment and I have never been this strong but I have lost quite a bit of muscular bulk. Speed and strengh is so much better than carrying around a big muscular body and eating a lot so you get bigger, well thats my experiance. All my equipment consists of a chin up bar, a set of dumbells 15 kg, skipping rope, plyometric box and a medicine ball. I am currently going to buy either a punch bag, paddle witch fits to the wall, or a set of 50 kg barbells. Which do you think I should buy.
  4. Basicly at my kickboxing club I'm Tyson and everyone else is Lewis. I relize I really have to duck a bit more and then come up with some uppercuts and hooks. As someone is more powerful than me I have what they don't and thats agility. They can keep me at a distance where I can't evenc come with a punch so they just keep jabbing me in the face and it really takes the piss. Even when I duck they can still get me. The only thing I could do to avoid them was to do a lot of side stepping and doing flying jabs towards his face. Basically I find the best thing is to really be aggresive in a martial art such as kickboxing. THX FOR THE REPLYS
  5. At my kickboxing club there are only adults and its really annoying when we do sparring because I of my height due to the fact that I'm sparring against someone thats about 10 years older than me, and if your going to suggest trying to get a friend involved forget it they all want to play football ( *****s game). The fact is that when they go on the offensive I cant do anything about it! I fight back but it seems useless coz lust time I just got thrown to the floor buy the number of overhwelming punches and the fact that they are punching down at me makes it very hard even to block! Any suggestions? THX in advance
  6. What are your thoughts on the effectifness of using barbells. Do you really need them for effective weightlifting. Do you think dumbells are enough? THX in return
  7. I actually had a fight with my karate club against a local Tai Kwon Do club and we beat the krap out of them due to their insistant high kicking wjich are very easy to hold and then counter. Basicly I found in sparring that you just have to be tough about it and get in there! Be aggresive! Remember nice guys finish last.
  8. I am from England and I do karate and kickboxing with the Sama Organisation. The karate is composed of the fighting style of Wado Ryu, the stance from shotokan, and includes kobodo (weapons training). Its a very traditional style and is quite hard but is probobly the best self defence karate I have ever seen as it uses a lot of throws and sweeps as well as plenty of kicks and strikes. Kickboxing is full contact and you have to be very fit to particicpate in it. The clubs are great and are far better than any other karate club I have seen. I use karate as a one self defence as it includes every thing inclueding some grappling techniques, and use my kickboxing to improve my speed, strengh and my power. http://www.agibson.freeuk.com _________________ Kickboxer and Wado ryu Karate SAMA Organisation Former black belt ECKA Karate From England 14 years old [ This Message was edited by: Eye of the Tiger on 2002-06-08 10:12 ] [ This Message was edited by: Eye of the Tiger on 2002-06-08 10:17 ]
  9. I am currently in the process of starting a plyometric program and part of the program will be a lot of resistance training with body weight and weights. I am buying all the plyometric stuff, but for the weights I only have a 15 kg set of dumbells. Do you think its necessary to buy a barbell or could you just use to dumbells to impersanate a barbell. I don't think a bench is necessary. THX in return
  10. My uncle had his own karate club along side some friends. There was disagreements as to who owned the club and they had a big fight. I think my uncle kicked their ass but I don't know what happend to the club.
  11. Grappling is a waste of time. There are three fight zones. Punching, kicking and grappling. You could quite easily avoid or counter a grappling fighter and even if they did get you into a hold of somesort you could easily get a punch in and karate teaches you some basic grappling anyway. So whats all the fuss about? There are so many ways to prevent yourself from getting grappled. Karate kicks ass.
  12. Plyometrics is all about power, speed and strengh and that is the best thing for what your looking for. I suggest you buy ' Jumping into Plyometrics' by Donald A Chu, PhD
  13. There are lots of awnsers but basically you should do the best martial arts suited to you to make a well rounded fighter, e.g. someone might be better at judo than bjj and someone might be better at karate than kung fu for the striking part. For me I would pick kickboxing for power and the practical side of a quick fight and inclued karate for a more dangerous situation e.g. knife attack, and judo as a ground grappling fight. But I'm fine with what I do and if I would be taken to the groun I would just improvise.
  14. Don't starve yourself. It's nit good for anyone, besides your not even fat! If anyone wants to slim down you should still eat but avoid any fatty foods and eat lean meats and vegetables and take up more exercise.
  15. I have bought a book on plyometrics but it doesn't include any martial art in the sports specific section. Could any one tell me the best plyometric exercises for martial arts preferably karate and kickboxing or a sport that you think is similar to it so I could use that specific plyometric exercises in the sports srecific section.
  16. So how do you acheive Ki power?
  17. Hi KickinCroft! I do kickboxing and your acrobats will definately help you. Kickboxing uses punches from boxing and strikes and kicks from karate. In kickboxing flexibility is very useful as is speed and strengh. The acrobats will provide a lot of flexibility and strengh. I would suggest plyometric exercices which is mainly based on speed but also develops strengh, endurance and other fitness essential to kickboxing fitness. I found 'Jumping into Plyometrics' by Donald A. Chu, Phd very useful and now base my overall fitness on the trainging programs in the book. Hope this helps _________________ Kickboxer and Wado ryu Karate SAMA Organisation Former black belt ECKA Karate From England 14 years old [ This Message was edited by: Eye of the Tiger on 2002-06-02 09:55 ]
  18. So how could one learn to use Ki power? I really don't beleive this, I can see it as some kind of relaxed state of mind. So if I'm wrong help me feel this Ki so I can experiance it for myself rather than just beleiving what everybody sais, no offence but how do I know its true?
  19. TKD_McGee Don't call me a HIPPIE!! I'm going into the Marines when I'm older, I attend Marine cadets where I am thought things from seamenship to silent killing techniques so DON'T CALL ME A HIPPIE!!!
  20. Sorry If I have offended anyone. I did not mean any disrespect, do you think I posted this to make everyone upset. Sure I can understand I f someone told me about the bad things my country done I would be pretty pissed off. All I was suggesting was that the US airforce have done some bad things such as killing those innocent people I have no doubt the English people have done bad things as well It's just that they were not punished at all for what they did. This is the act of the individuals not the whole US airforce, I shouldn't of set it out like that.
  21. Sherpers are Naples people that carry the heavy loads of equipment when climbers come to the Himaleyers. I would like to reseach that pound for pound thing coz my friend has a huge frame and is really big and strong and I can beat the krap out of him and I'm kind of a medium frame. And I would take that laughing thing back because that actually happend.Everything I say in this forum is no bull****. It was on a film which I think was called something like dragon where it told the true story of Bruce Lee played by another actor, and this was according to the wifes autobiograthy of him.
  22. The US ariforce have caused so many casualtys in all these countrys and get away with it. Quite a while ago in italy there was a cable car full of skiiers and familys and these 2 pilots decided to have some fun and started to fly around the cable car and ultimately killed about 50 people it was the same in the gulf war and vietnam.
  23. I have read all these sport and fitness books and they all say the more you eat and the more you train the bigger you get. This is true but what I don't think is true is that it also makes you stronger. You take a loook at Bruce Lee for instance. He only weighed 7 and a half stone, yet he beat 6 ft bodt builders up. Also we can take sherepas for instance. There tiny people and have very small muscular bulk and are very skinny looking. Yet they can take those huge weights with ease whereas there was this ex olympic weightlifter with them and he could only take the weight for about 3 steps until he had to get one of the sherepas to take it off him. Can someone explain why is this. _________________ Kickboxer and Wado ryu Karate SAMA Organisation Former black belt ECKA Karate From England 14 years old [ This Message was edited by: Eye of the Tiger on 2002-05-30 09:44 ] [ This Message was edited by: Eye of the Tiger on 2002-05-30 10:05 ]
  24. you should really do a total body workout or you could injure your back muscles by just doing abs. But in awnser to your question you should do it 3 times a week including other strengh exercises but you have to do a good session maybe an hour of strengh work including stretches and flexibility work before and after. You should only do it every day if you only do a short period mayber 10 minutes a day in the morning, as your body can build up muscle quicker as it has less to do. Its better to do a three day ratio but include strengh, endurance, flexibility and probobly the most important for martial arts Plyometric exercises which build power and speed.
