I've had my teeth driven into my lip before, but never prolonged swelling like that... sounds like it probably needs a dr's eye.

Welcome!

I think promotion fee is an indicator, too. To promot in judo around here, you can do it through two people, one costs $50, the other $10. Of course, because of circumstances, the $50 place promotes tons, and the $10 one promotes few, but they are quite qualified for their rank.

Recognizing Black Belts of other styles in dojo.
marie curie replied to jaymac's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I did four years of Seiei Kan Karate (I was a san kyu or first brown belt), a semester of TKD (haha, I know just a glimpse of the art, but it still happened), a summer of Kung Fu and Tai Chi when I was in China (Haha, again), and two years of Judo, before starting Kajukenbo. When I started, I began wearing my white belt, but I was "skipped" over yellow belt, and may be once again, since I had the time in for martial arts, and I learned all of the techniques and forms rather quickly. Also, I don't fight like a yellow belt, so that isn't fair to others in competition (I don't fight like a brown belt anymore either, though.... its been a while). I started as white (since I didn't know the forms and stuff specific to this style) but they are promoting me a little more quickly due to the fact that I know all that I'm required up to that point and perform it well. I think that this form of recognition is good, because I never have a belt that I can't back up for the system.... just maybe one that I got a little faster than expected. -
I think there was a thread on here before about how to get it frayed, and I think that they even discussed what belts to buy that frey the best hehe

This is very true... how often do you have the optinon to test? If you aren't going to have to wait another year or anything, I'd skip it, and just be sure to prevent a perminant injury- putting your training on hold is far superior to having it stopped altogether. Good luck and go slowly

Girlfriend says Karate is taking over my life!
marie curie replied to disarm's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
she probably views school/work as differently than a hobby. just a thought. maybe you could make a deal that she comes to 3 MA classes if you give her 3 nights of doing whatever she wants (including watching chick flicks or something you most certainly aren't interested in), just to give it a try? -
Girlfriend says Karate is taking over my life!
marie curie replied to disarm's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My boyfriend and I do MA together, but if we didn't it would probably become a problem. We have 8 formal hrs of class a week, plus about 3 hrs travel/changing time (about 25 mins each way), plus at home practicing = a whole lot of hours. Also, he gets more into the talking about it constantly than me, and as I've been injured recently, it got abnoxious hearing so much about part of his life that I wasn't taking part in. I agree with the previous post, its important to sit down and ask, "what, specifically, do you need from me that I'm not giving you" "what can we do together that doesen't impact my body in a negative way"? It should help. -
As for a Karate Gi- I keep the logo on, because it is usually on the bottom of my left side, reminding me which goes on the outside when putting it on.... in my arts we get made fun of for being dead if we do it the wrong way... As for Judo Gi, they are usually pretty small and Jiu-Jitsu.... well, they are supposed to have patches all over them

promoted without me....

Nice! Congradulations! -
I'm from WV, living in Pittsburgh, with my boyfriend from GA... I think that people make associations with particualar areas. My boyfriend kind of wanted to end up in NC, but I insist on raising my children in a blue state. I just know that the conservative ideas that I grew up around are not what I want for my family, and sooooo if anyone says anything to me about the "south" I have knowlegde of the values of the majority of the voting public, and don't appreciate them, jumping to funny assumptions about "rednecks" and banjos, even though I've lived below the Mason-Dixon line most of my life. If you were to say something about moving to pittsburgh, cleveland, or NJ, someone would probably make a crack about breathing in more chemicals than most people know exist. If you say something about Kansas, someone will probably say, "Haha, well watch out that your house doesn't fly away" If you say something about CA, people will probably say something about hippies or surfers... Soooo, each area has their associations and I think we just jump to the pop-references to each place because it's what we are exposed to all the time.

JJJ vs. BJJ
marie curie replied to MMAFan's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
If it's a good BJJ school they will tach you some standing techniques and takedowns..but yea the general focus will be ground fighting BJJ competition starts from standing, so I would really imagine that most schools teach takedowns. -
Great thoughts!!!

I think that loading too many on the front end of training (know 4 katas for yellow, 4 for blue, etc.) may hinder learning all aspects of the art, but as many have pointed out, just having the katas in the system translates to having more for the people who have trained for years to keep working on

seriously offended
marie curie replied to scad's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I think that it is very common for people to get very defensive of their school and style. We train so hard and put a lot of stock into something that has many rival schools and styles. -
I, also, train in both. My club does both, and everyone seems to be a big fan. I'm a big fan because of what BJJ had done for my Judo, and a lot of other people like what the Judo has done for their BJJ They complement each others' weaknesses nicely and it's really nice to play standing with Judo rules and on the ground with BJJ, so the matches can go a long time and you get to work on your endurance for both

If you could do it over.....
marie curie replied to Brian's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I like my martial arts journey- I don't think I'd like to have changed anything. I took some time off, but it allowed me to really appreciated what MA does for me. I had a very good beginning art, and am really enjoying advancing in my newer ones! -
Capoira is very acrobatic, so maybe that developed a simialr motion

the kinds that don't scratch easily... so I can store stuff on them
-
I'd say give it some time... 4-6 weeks of at least going really lightly (as in not doing anything serious with that leg at all)... if you hurt it again in that time, I'd reset the date and wait another 4-6 weeks, this time going more lightly. Then just take it a little easily for the next 4 weeks or so... then I'd start back... don't streatch hard and far, stretch just to where you feel it stretching, hold repeat, then go a little farther, but really just concentrate on doing the stretches very often, not so much with the very far.

Seiei Kan (Similar to Shotokan in forms and movement) Kajukenbo (a bit of a hodge-podge practical street-defence hawaiin style)
