How did MA begin in Japan?

Your teacher's favorite phrase...
marie curie replied to raven91's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My Instructor totally says "M'Kay" like mr. macky in southpark a bunch, and whenever someone askes a question, he usually starts off with "yes and no...." and then goes into this big monolouge -
Gracie usually only fights with "special rules" in the ufc, so he definately doesn't have the experince in this specific format. (especially not recently) and Matt Hughes is kind of a beast right now.

Recognizing Black Belts of other styles in dojo.
marie curie replied to jaymac's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
My style doesn't have competions, themselves (it's mostly practical self defense and street fighting, so we use elbows, knees, groin shots, and eye gouges- not very tournament freindly), so we fight in open MA tourny's agains Korean and Okanawan and just whoever shows up. Anyway, they don't have that rule (in any that I've gone to) so they trust you to be responsible...... and actually at the last tournament I went to, I wore a green belt, because they'd just throw me into the intermediate division and that really was where I belonged. I actually lost my only match with me having 4 points and she having 3, because (of course) I had two penalties. Silly excessive force penalties. -
JJJ seems a good fit- of course most JJJ doesn't have tourny's because of the danger, so like TJS said, I wouldn't go on that. Are there any other grappling schools in the area? If there is another and you go to both, explaining what you are looking for and checking out both, usually someone at one gym will tell you the good/bad points of their's and the other.

what's a sine wave in martial arts?

I'm still confused- are there any videos out there that demonstrate this? -
Guys giving in to ladies??
marie curie replied to Kasumi27's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Yeh, in my clubs, the guys use about 80% of what they use on other guys, so they say. They say its not something they do on purpose, but that it's just strange to hit hard. -
Hehe- the really funny thing about this thread is that there is another thread like "My girlfriend says MA are taking over my life" http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=25904&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 and everyone in here keeps saying "bring her to train with you"

If you start out with the bo, then the jo will be easy, whereas if you start out with the jo, the bo will take some getting used to for control.

http://www.medpagetoday.com/PrimaryCare/WeightManagement/tb2/2998 A large part of this is that lifestyle has changed more quickly than our bodies have had to adapt- usually we've had many many generations for major changes, (ie. hunters and gatherers with constant foraging to farmers with "down time") but advancement happens at such a crazy rate now. People used to mostly do all physical work. 8 hrs of working out per day everyday will do wonders for keeping off the pounds. Also, all that movement keeps the metabolism up. Now that we mostly have desk jobs or ride in cars or just stand around, we don't use the number of calorie, but our metabolism drops because of the inactivity. Well, we are tired because of this, and the only way to boost our metabolism (without drugs) is to eat. Of course that only works for a couple hours, so then we have to eat again. So, by time we get home, we are exhausted due to the nature of our work (usually very eye-straining), and we don't want to spend the rest of every day working out. Of course the usual "we are too busy and eat poorly and quickly" and "food now is full of crap" and its true. Anyway, so it's not all "the system" or "the parents".

Keep doing it. It's slow now, but if you just practice it over and over again, your muscles will get more acclimated to the motion and you will be able to go faster.

Yeh, and stay chill. You're gonna get hit. Just be sure to hit back

Any extra training (as long as it is from a quality instructor) is going to be beneficial -

What are some useful games for kids?
marie curie replied to marie curie's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Wow! Thanks for all the good ideas! -
My ex and I started the same Judo class, and it was no big. My current bf and I have been training together (he is actually an instructor in one of my classes) and its been nothing but wonderful. We once had a problem, but it was social, not MA related at all. It's good for our club because I'm the buisness manager, and of course we have constant communication on issues and plans. It helps us have something that we are both passionate about to share. We've been doing this for 1.5 years now, and all is well and good.

Why not call up local dojos and ask if you can sit in on a class of each. Get to know the instuctors and the class dynamic. See what that specific school teaches, and how they teach. BJJ may be awesome here at my school, but not in your town... and the MT may be a little silly looking here, but awesome where you are. So... maybe check it out?

One of my arts has specific "tricks" or techniques that they do, and I go over these carefully, picking one or two, again and again and again

My school doesn't teach kids right now, is considering it for in the future, so the instructors and I were discussing some curriculum stuff. I've seen lots of comments on "games" for children here, on the forums, and I would just like to hear what some of these games are, the benefits and things to watch out for with each.

Yes, the KK movies were probably #1 for managing to squeese the most MA philosophies in
